Party-Ready in 7 Minutes Flat – Denise Li

If there’s one thing I’m sufficiently smug about with regards to my relationship with Alain, it’s that I’m usually the first one dressed, made up, and ready to go whenever we head out for the night. Partly because he likes to wait till the absolute last minute to take a shower and takes like 10 minutes to get his hair just right, but mostly because I don’t subscribe to the stereotype that women need three hours to get immaculately groomed.

Of course, it took lots of practice over the years to learn how to get party-ready in under 10 minutes. But I think quality products with good textures go a long way as well.

That’s why I’m such a huge fan of Nars – it’s hard to beat the smooth, easy-to-apply texture, whether you’re using one of its eyeshadows or lippies. They just glide onto your skin, and you can quickly build colour, although the colour payoffs are usually pretty amazing with just a little product.

As my fashion sensibilities tend towards the safe side, I like experimenting with slightly bolder makeup looks – an electric blue eyeshadow, or perhaps a hot pink liquid lippie. I was definitely wowed by the Nars Guy Bourdin Holiday Collection.

But first, who exactly is Guy Bourdin?

He’s a well-known French photographer whose work captured the imagination of Nars founder Francois Nars. Bourdin’s works convey “unconventional narratives and overt sexuality”, which was pretty groundbreaking back in the 70s. His bold style has influenced Francois Nars over the years, and nowhere is that more clear in this collection, with its bright colours and impactful finishes.

The photography for this campaign is pretty evocative as well, and clearly plays homage to Bourdin. In the words of Francois Nars himself, “We’re both drawn to beautiful, provocative, even audacious women. I think we’re both willing to break the rules.”

I’m sure you’re pretty impatient to see what the products in this range look like so without further ado, here are few of my favourites.

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Bad Behaviour, $38

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Bad Behaviour, $38

This gun-metal shade is great for all skin tones and just what you need to create the perfect smokey eye.

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow Wishful Thinking, $38

This electric-blue shade is great for those retro-themed parties.

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Full Frontal, $38

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Full Frontal, $38

My secret to looking instantly dressed up for formal affairs is to swipe on a plum lipstick like this one.

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Goodbye Emmanuelle, $38

NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Goodbye Emmanuelle, $38

Pink lipsticks are a great option for the girl who doesn’t feel totally comfortable in bombshell-red shades. It has a more fun vibe, I think.

NARS Guy Bourdin Coeur Battant Blush, $50

NARS Guy Bourdin Blush in Coeur Battant, $50

I can imagine that this blush would look absolutely gorgeous on olive or dark skin.

NARS Guy Bourdin Day Dream Blush, $50

NARS Guy Bourdin Blush in Day Dream, $50

A more suitable option for those with light to medium skintones, this imparts a healthy, post-exercise glow.

Using products from this collection, I managed to achieve that party-ready makeup look in under 7 minutes … I timed it!

What I used:

– A powder foundation

– Nars Guy Bourdin Blush in Day Dream

– Nars Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Bad Behaviour

– Nars Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Goodbye Emmanuelle

– A pencil liner to balance out the smokey lid

– A lashing of mascara

My favourite product from the Nars collection (though it’s hard to pick just one) probably has to be the lippie. It’s so moisturising that I don’t even need to use a lip balm on my chapped lips before applying this lipstick. It also stays put for ages, and this shade is a versatile one I can use day and night.

The Nars Holiday collection also has some wonderful gift sets you can buy to pamper the women in your life.

n Collection Crime of Passion Face Kit, $80

The products I’ve shown in this post are just a taste of what you can expect from the Nars Guy Bourdin Collection. To check out the full range of products, be sure to head down to Nars, Tangs Orchard from mid-November.
