[Press Trip] Meet The Game Changer In Skincare From Sulwhasoo – Deborah Tan

This month, change up your skincare regime with this all-new beauty concept from Sulwhasoo, South Korea’s No. 1 luxury cosmetic brand. Deborah Tan explains the Luminature Essential Finisher below.

Exactly how many steps does your skincare regime need? Let us count the ways …

1. Makeup remover (Night)
2. Cleanser
3. Lotion
4. Essence
5. Serum
6. Treatment
7. Moisturizer
8. Eye cream
9. Sunscreen (Day)

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, $112.

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, $112.

That’s 8 steps depending on whether you’re doing this in the day (which you end by applying sunscreen) or at night (which you begin by removing your makeup). Some women use more than 1 serum, some use a pre-serum, and some use a serum on their eyes before they put on eye cream. The amount of money, time and care we invest in our skin is just …. wow.

So if you are ready to shower ever more care on your skin, read on. Because I’m going to talk about this all-new product from the land of beauty trends and crazes – South Korea.

The “Mi-an” Tradition
Although Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher represents a new product category in skincare, its inspiration comes from a beauty tradition steeped in history. Introduced more than 1,500 years ago, the “Mi-an” (“beautifying finish” in Korean) was a last step of the skincare regime followed by Korean women in ancient times. It was formulated during the Age of Three Empires and recorded in the Kyuhap-Chongseo (Encyclopedia of Women’s Life) during the Joseon Dynasty.

How Does Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher Work?
Similar to the “Mi-an”, the Luminature Essential Finisher is designed to be used as the final step in your skincare routine. It works by forming a natural protective barrier over the skin, locking in the efficacy of the skincare products from Steps 3 to 8 (see above).

How To Use
After you have put on your skincare products, dispense a pump full of the Luminature Essential Finisher into your palm. Gently warm the product by massaging it between your hands and then press them over your face.

Every bottle of Luminature Essential Finisher is packed with the concentrates of 5 roots of Red Ginseng and 110 cups of Green Tea. Red Ginseng encourages the regeneration of the skin while Green Tea purifies and boosts the effect of other ingredients.

Do not expect an immediate miracle with Luminature Essential Finisher. As a product designed to lock in and enhance your existing skincare products, it goes without saying that the preceding products have to work well for you in the first place. Think of it as a vitamin supplement. If your existing diet sucks, popping a vitamin pill isn’t going to make you the healthiest person on Earth. So if you think you can get away with using crappy products or with not even using any products, you are setting yourself on the path of skincare disaster.

Obviously for “best possible results”, you are encouraged to use this with other Sulwhasoo products. However, to see if this really enhances my existing skincare products, I stuck to the ones I habitually use whenever I’m not testing other products.

The improvements weren’t obvious until …. I did a half-and-half with both sides of my faces. In the After pictures, I can see an improvement in texture, tone, smoothness and firmness. I particularly like how much smoother the skin at my forehead has become. There is LESS GREYNESS in the After images – the Luminature Esssential Finisher really shines on the radiance front.

Overall, I have found that my skin is a lot firmer and rosier after adding Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher to my skincare routine. The Koreans believe that at the age of 35, women will begin to see a lot more drastic changes in their skin due to a change in hormonal levels. The Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher also has the second function of enhancing aging skin’s ability to react to skincare products. So if you feel that your skin has “stop reacting” to your skincare products, it could be that all it needs is a product to kickstart its energy level once again.

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher retails at $112 at Sulwhasoo counters islandwide. Material World was invited to a press trip in Seoul, South Korea, for the media launch of Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, and given a product to review. All opinions are the author’s own. Beauty Review: Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins – Deborah Tan

Are you religious with your night cream? Deborah Tan admits she isn’t … but … she may just have found The One in Origins’ new High Potency Night-A-Mins.

I think I have found THE night cream of my dreams. Night creams are tricky business for me because I often find them too rich for my skin. For those who don’t sleep in air-conditioned rooms, you may find using night creams – which tend to have a richer consistency than their Day sisters – result in you waking up to a thin film of oil on your face. I could use a night cream with a less rich texture, but often, these feel inadequate and not soothing enough.

I’m at the age where I want my night cream to be everything without being oily. I want my night cream to (1) have lots of skin-loving benefits (2) have a relaxing scent and (3) be able to give my skin a nice, rested glow in the morning.

When Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins arrived at my desk about a month and a half ago, I couldn’t wait to get home to try it.

High Potency Night A Mins Mineral-enriched Oil-free Renewal CreamThe Science
Night creams often have more potent, richer ingredients because our skin’s temperature and metabolic rate are at their highest at night. As a result, we lose more moisture and produce more free radicals. Night-A-Mins is a mineral- and vitamins-packed cream formulated with a blend of skin-fortifying antioxidants that’ll help strengthen the skin at night so it’ll be better able to protect itself during the day. It is oil-free yet it plumps up skin with hydration with ingredients that replenish its moisture reserves.

The minerals and vitamins that can be found in Night-A-Mins include Salicylic Acid (to help slough away surface dead skin cells), Fennel Seed (to tighten skin), Vitamin C (to fight free radicals), Vitamin H (to promote overall skin health), Calcium (to seal in moisture and defend skin against future dehydration), and Magnesium (to soothe dry skin).

The Scent
The ingredients may be what make Night-A-Mins a highly effective night cream but it is its scent that won me over. It contains an essential oil blend of neroli, which promotes tranquility, valerian, to relieve nervous tension, orange, which conveys positive feelings and happiness, and vanilla, known to relax and soothe irritability.

I love the scent and it is to this delicious cloud of sweet dream-inducing fragrance that I look forward to at the end of every day. Suddenly, bedtime is an event that I look forward to! On weekends, I even use this cream as a day moisturizer so I’ll feel more relaxed and calm!

In fact, it was found in an Actigraph study (an actigraph is a “wristwatch” device  that measures how many tosses and turns you do while you sleep) that almost all panelists experienced a more restful night with longer, more tranquil sleep when they applied Night-A-Mins before bed.

For your best night of sleep ... ever!

For your best night of sleep … ever!

Using It
Dole out a pearl-sized dollop of Night-A-Mins after cleansing and treating your skin. Gently warm the cream – this will help your skin absorb it better and release its relaxing scent – by rubbing your hands together BRIEFLY and then press it firmly into the skin on your face and neck. Massage the cream into your skin with soft upward motions. Then cup your hands around your nose and inhale deeply to experience the scent.

I’ve been using Night-A-Mins for close to two months now and I’m glad to report that I have stuck to it. The gel-cream texture doesn’t grease up the face and it allows those with oily skins to enjoy the rich, skin-repairing benefits of a high potency night cream. The scent makes this cream a joy to use. I notice how my cheeks look rosier and healthier in the mornings while the skin at my forehead and night look smoother and softer. There is little noticeable improvement in lift and firmness, but these you can remedy with a weekly use of skin firming mask or a dose of anti-ageing serum before using this night cream.

I’d recommend Night-A-Mins for women who want to use high potency night creams but have not been able to find out suitable for use in non air-conditioned rooms and for our humid weather.

Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-enriched oil-free renewal cream retails at $55 for a 50ml jar at TANGS Vivocity, Robinsons Orchard, Robinsons JEM, Robinsons Raffles City, Isetan Scotts and Metro Paragon.

Beauty Review: Biotherm Life Plankton Essence – Deborah Tan

When it comes to essences, most people have come to trust one by a Japanese brand – even Deborah Tan. But she tries Biotherm’s new Life Plankton Essence for 8 days and now finds her loyalty wavering.

If you’ve ever used a Biotherm product, you’d know about the brand’s iconic ingredient – Life Plankton. An ingredient discovered in the thermal springs in the Pyrenees, scientists have found that Life Plankton has exceptional renewing and soothing properties. And, in the brand’s newest products, you’ll see that Life Plankton is now being used together with other marine ingredients, such as the red algae found along the coasts of Brittany, to help skin cope with a number of concerns ranging from sagging to blemishes.

This year, scientists are Biotherm have created a product with the highest concentration of Life Plankton. At 5%, the concentration of Life Plankton in a bottle of Life Plankton Essence may not sound like a lot, but according to Dr Elisa Simonpietri, Biotherm’s International Scientific Director, “Life Plankton is so powerful, that at 5%, it has been shown to soothe symptoms of the common skin disorder atopic dermatitis.”

Does It Deliver On Its Claims?
Life Plankton Essence claims to deliver 8 skin benefits in 8 days. In just slightly over a week, you’ll notice improvements in the following areas:

– Skin becomes more radiant
– Fine lines become more faded
– Skin looks more even
– Skin feels smoother
– Skin is more hydrated
– There is greater resilience and elasticity
– Skin feels soothed
– Skin feels softer

The texture of this essence is slightly thicker than your usual essence. Apply to freshly cleansed skin by gently patting the essence into your skin at your face and neck area. You can use it with other Biotherm products or with your usual skincare products.

To demonstrate the essence’s youth-renewing efficacy, Biotherm Laboratories developed The Hand Test, where 28 women were asked to treat one of their hands with the essence in the morning and at night for 8 days. Judges were then blindfolded, asked to feel these hands and answer the question: According to you, what age do you associate with this skin? The treated hands were perceived to be 2.7 years younger on the average, with the best being 12.8 years.

In another self-assessment by 53 women, 100% of them reported less visible lines, brighter-looking skin and more even skin tones.

The results are definitely encouraging and I put it to the test:

Before (left) and After (right). Pictures taken with iPhone 4S and have not been digitally altered.

Before (left) and After (right). Pictures taken with iPhone 4S and have not been digitally altered.

I decided to test it WITH MAKEUP, to see if the improvements are visible even under makeup. As you can see my skin tone is more even and my complexion definitely looks more radiant. These results in just 8 days!

When I first learnt that Life Plankton Essence contains just 5% of its active ingredient, I was skeptical about whether it would really work. Since other essences in the market contains up to 99% of active ingredients, 5% seems like a pathetic number. However, as the essence has proven, 5% is enough to make a dramatic difference to the skin.

I really like the texture of the essence too. It hydrates the skin so well, on some days, I felt as if I didn’t even need a moisturizer.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who needs to boost the condition of their skin in a short period of time.

Beauty Review: Biotherm Liquid White Spot Focus – Deborah Tan

Biotherm’s White D-tox range gets a new update in the form of Liquid White. Deborah Tan tries Liquid White Spot Focus Ever-Clear Dark Spot Corrector for 2 weeks to see if it delivers on its promises.

Although not obvious, there is a line of spots and acne scar pits running from my temples to just below my cheekbones. The region is also slightly darker than the rest of my face. It looks like a U. This is fine – it gives the impression of a slightly sculpted face. But I’ve wondered if it would be possible to even out the skin tone there.

Biotherm’s new Liquid White Spot Focus Ever-Clear Dark Spot Corrector claims to address the “butterfly mask” some of us have in the form of freckles and pigmentation. I decided to use it to see if it would lighten my “U” shaped pigmented area.

For 2 weeks, I applied a spot of the serum, post-cleansing, along the stretch on the left side of my face. My right was testing another product. Every day, twice a day, I would apply this serum before my moisturizer.

The serum has a water-like texture and is easily absorbed by the skin. After two weeks, my result below:

Before (left) and After (right). Pictures taken without makeup and under the same lighting. Photos have not been airbrushed or digitally altered in any way.

Before (left) and After (right). Pictures taken without makeup and under the same lighting. Photos have not been airbrushed or digitally altered in any way.

The area has lightened significantly, and my skin texture has also become much finer. The pores and the pits are also not as deep as they used to be.

Besides Biotherm’s iconic Pure Thermal Plankton, Liquid White Spot Focus also combines Red Algae (that helps fight dullness and limiting melanin’s flow up to skin’s surface) and White Lotus Extract (that helps fight oxidative damages, dehydration and pigmentation) to help “depollute” the skin of toxins that mar its radiance and translucency. In 4 weeks, users can expect a brighter complexion, and in 8 weeks, fewer and smaller dark spots.

While there are no lack of choices when it comes to spot correcting serums, I think this new offering by Biotherm is one of the gentlest and most hydrating I’ve tried. My test period was during the time when Singapore was suffering a mini drought of sorts and my skin often felt scorched and parched at the end of the day. The serum was a joy to use, its watery texture felt like a real treat for the skin.

If you have been trying to lighten your acne scars with little success, I think you can give this a shot. In fact, you can go online here and request for a free sample. Like I always say, try before you buy.

Beauty Review: Etude House Every Month Cleansing Foam – Vanessa Tai

Korean skincare giant Etude House has outdone themselves once again, with the recent launch of 12 different facial cleansers, each to target a specific skin concern.

You might be thinking, “Why on earth does one skincare brand need to create so many different cleansers?” Well, Etude House has identified 12 main skin concerns – from acne to loss of elasticity – and developed 12 different facial cleansers to target these problems.

I guess that makes sense, given how each of us have our own unique skin concerns. Even among the four of us at Material World, each of us have very different skin needs as well. For this review, each of us picked a cleanser that best matched our skin types, and tried it out for two weeks.

Deborah – Soothing Relief (Aloe Vera)

Every Month Cleansing Foam #7 ALOE VERA (1)

Skin Type: Sensitive, acne-prone

Review: “The mild fruity scent is pleasant and the gel-like texture of the cleanser emulates that of aloe vera gel. Although the cleanser foams up easily, the lather is soft like a powder puff and doesn’t leave my skin feeling too tight or dry.”

Denise – Purifying (Lemon & Garlic)

Every Month Cleansing Foam #4 LEMON & GARLIC (1)

Skin Type: Clogged, and often exposed to UV rays

Review: “When this cleanser first landed on my desk, I was intrigued as it had ‘lemon and garlic’ written on it. Sounds like something you rub on fish as a marinade if you ask me! Thankfully, it smelled more like lemon than garlic. The fresh citrus-y scent made this pleasant to use, but honestly, I was a tad disappointed at its supposed “purifying” properties. After using it for over two weeks, I didn’t really notice a reduction in blackheads and my skin remains as oily as ever. As an everyday cleanser, it does a decent job of removing debris and grime, but I’d advise you to temper your expectations where its skincare properties are concerned.”

Lili – Deep Moisturising (Avocado & Butter)

Every Month Cleansing Foam #1_AVOCADO & BUTTER (1)

Skin Type: Dry, dehydrated

Review: “This cleanser is thicker than my usual facial cleansers, and I was impressed by its smooth, creamy texture. Just a tiny amount was needed for a good lather. For a cleanser this affordable, it does a decent job in cleansing my skin, especially any stubborn traces of makeup. Perhaps it’s too soon to tell, but I’ve yet to notice a visible difference in terms of my skin’s hydration levels.”

Vanessa – Combination (Apple & Tomato)

Every Month Cleansing Foam #3 APPLE & TOMATO (1)

Skin Type: Dull, discoloured

Review: “As my skin tends to be on the dry side, I appreciated how the moist pearl cream texture of the cleanser didn’t leave my skin with any tightness, unlike other cleansers I’ve tried. It also had a subtle scent of apples, which I liked. If you’re looking for a deep cleanser or one that is brimming with brightening ingredients, this probably won’t be your first choice. However, I’ll recommend stashing this in your gym bag for a quick and refreshing post-workout cleanse.”

[Material World x Elizabeth Arden] Farewell, Freckles! – Vanessa Tai

Living in sunny Singapore brings with it a host of sun-related damage, such as pigmentation spots and skin discolouration. Wanting to take her sun protection regime up a notch, Vanessa tried out Elizabeth Arden’s new Visible Whitening range. Here’s her review.

While many people have complimented me on my freckles (and I, too, secretly like them), I am concerned about these tiny brown spots becoming darker and more pronounced. Or worse, merging to form larger “continents”. Freckles are formed when UV rays from the sun hit your skin, causing the outermost layer of your skin (the epidermis) to thicken. This in turn causes melanocytes – also known as the pigment-producing cells in your skin – to produce even more melanin, which darkens existing freckles.

Despite knowing all this, I must confess, I’m not the most hardworking when it comes to my sun protection regime. I dutifully apply sunscreen every morning, but I rarely touch up during the day, and I only use brightening masks once a month. However, this recent heat wave has got me worrying about the appearance of new dark spots. I decided simply applying sunscreen alone won’t cut it; I needed to step up my game.

Enter Elizabeth Arden’s Visible Whitening Intense Brightening Biocellulose Mask and Visible Whitening Anti-Melanin Spot Corrector.

The mask is densely packed with ingredients such as Vitamin B3 to even out skin tone and Licorice extracts to prevent the formation of dark spots, but it’s not drenched to the point where it drips with product when you open it. I’ve always preferred bio-cellulose masks because they adhere to your skin so much better. This ultra-fine mesh textile fits onto my facial contours like a second skin. In fact, I could be lying on my belly reading and it wouldn’t even move an inch, let alone slide off!

See how well it adheres to my skin!

See how well it adheres to my skin!

As for the Anti-Melanin Spot Corrector, it’s a lightweight gel-like product that’s formulated with intensive skin brighteners such as Vitamin C derivatives and an exfoliating agent. This reduces the appearance of existing melanin spots on your skin’s outer most layers, and stems the production of new melanin.

I used the mask every other day for a week, and applied the spot corrector on my freckles every morning after applying a liberal amount of sunscreen. See the results below:

Yes, I know you can still see my freckles, but the spots are definitely visibly lighter. My skin also appears fairer and more radiant. Another thing I really liked about the mask is how it has a hydrating effect on top of its brightening properties. My skin felt softer, smoother and “cooler” after each application, and the after-glow effect spilled over to the next day as well.

Elizabeth Arden Visible Whitening Intense Brightening Biocellulose Mask, $90

While freckles may be a hereditary trait and are mostly harmless, that doesn’t mean you can’t control them from spreading. I’m very pleased that just one week of being a little more hardworking beauty-wise has reaped such visible results. I’m definitely not going to slack off my skincare regime anymore!

Beauty Review: Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions Clearly Corrective White Hydrating & Clarifying Masque – Deborah Tan

Sheet mask addict Deborah Tan puts the latest Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective White Hydrating & Clarifying Masque to the test. And she’s happy to report that it works beautifully. Read her review below.

I’m sure many of you love the cooling, hydrating feel of a sheet mask. I’m no exception. In fact, I’ve come to expect every brightening skincare line to feature a sheet mask. When Kiehl’s launched its Clearly Corrective White series a couple of years ago, I asked the visiting expert during an interview if they would consider launching a sheet mask soon. And what do you know? This year, my beauty wish got granted! When Sze Ying from Kiehl’s passed me the masks to try, I was over the moon!

The Clearly Corrective White line features 3 key ingredients – Activated C, Peony Extract and White Birch – to help skin achieve radiance and an even skin-tone. The Dark Spot Solution is so popular, the brand brings in a JUMBO size for a limited period of time to satisfy those who can’t get enough of its pigment spot erasing powers.

Here’s what you need to know: A SINGLE application of this sheet mask is the EQUIVALENT of 3 WEEKS’ use of the Dark Spot Solution.

Every box contains 6 sheets of masks.

Every box contains 6 sheets of masks.

So how does this sheet mask measure up? I shall let the pictures below do the talking.

First Impressions:
When I extracted the sheet mask from its foil packaging, I found the entire piece drenched with concentrate. It made opening up the piece slightly difficult but it’s nothing a little patience cannot manage. Also, I think many people would appreciate that the mask is packed with the skincare goodness of Clearly Corrective White. You are definitely getting your money’s worth in a single piece of mask.

Pardon the one moment of unglam-ness!

Pardon this one moment of unglam-ness!

Finally, the mask was on! The mask has two eye-flaps. You can use them to cover your eye area completely or fold them over the undereye area for a more intense “soak”. Scent-wise, there is an unmistakable lavender scent, which has a rather soothing, relaxing effect.

I noticed a marked improvement in smoothness and softness but it was only after I compared the Before and After pictures did I see that that mask also gave immediate results in clarity.

I really like this sheet mask from Kiehl’s. It’s intensely hydrating (great for the scorching weather these days), it’s immediately radiance-boosting, and it’s got a scent that I absolutely love. I’m positive that this is a beauty buy you won’t regret.

The Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions Clearly Corrective White Hydrating & Clarifying Treatment Masque is now available at all Kiehl’s stores islandwide. T for Too Faced

toofaced-mascaraThis mascara by Too Faced has made some rather bold claims – the most obvious being its name, Better Than Sex. And, based on the consumer study results, there was a 1,944-percent increase in lash volume, with 100 percent of the participants reporting dramatic volume and longer lashes. Lili, who claims to be “lash-deprived” was more than excited to try out this mascara. The first thing you’ll notice is its hourglass-shaped brush. Shaped after the silhouette of a woman, the brush was designed to separate, coat and curl each lash. This mascara has also got a long-wearing, smudge-proof formula with Acia Senegal tree extract to nourish the lashes. Application was a breeze; one single coat was enough to plump up and lengthen her sparse lashes. “While I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s better than sex, it is one of the better mascaras I’ve tried,” says Lili.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is available at Sephora outlets islandwide.

[Material World x Yves Rocher] What Happens To Your Face As You Age – Deborah Tan

As we age, our face goes through a whole host of changes. What can we do to ensure we age well and gracefully? New-to-Singapore beauty brand Yves Rocher introduces its champion skincare range Elixir 7.9 to Material World and we try its youth-intensifying serum and eye roll-on.

What happens to our face when we age? (1) It becomes drier and rougher as sebum production dips. (2) Collagen – the stuff that holds up our skin – isn’t quite as strong as it is, leading to the formation of wrinkles. (3) Our lymphatic system slows down, drainage of toxins suffers, and that explains why we look puffy in the morning. That’s it? No. You think it’s all in the face – wrinkles, spots, loss of radiance – but there are some other subtle aging signs we need to look at and they too affect how “old” others think you are:

Acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon's eye area shows how - with age - with the loss of skin density and fat, the socket area of the eye becomes more pronounced.

Acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon’s eye area shows how – with age – with the loss of skin density and fat, the sockets become more pronounced.

The Eyes
Our eyes become more deeply set as cheekbones start to sink. Your eyes look more sunken and your sockets and lines more obvious.

The Bone Structure
Our jawline – believe it or not – starts to thin. The awesome bone structure that we have becomes less pronounced and our face looks “doughy” and soft.

The Ears
As we age, our ears become bigger and longer. Gravity pulls at the cartilage of our ears, lengthening them. You might want to give heavy earrings a miss.

The Forehead
Men lose their hair, women gain “forehead”. Our forehead becomes broader as a result of our hairline thinning. That fashionably tight ponytail? You will want to give it a break.

It may seem like we are causing a minor mayhem here but here’s what we at Material World want you to know …

You can’t reverse the aging process. No matter what the skincare products out there may tell you, Nature trumps them all. What they can do is arrest the effects aging has done to your skin. Put simply, it means you can’t erase the wrinkle completely, but you can improve its appearance so it doesn’t look so deep and pronounced.

What Can We Do?
Besides being blessed with good genes (just look at how your mum or your grandmother ages), good habits and a healthy lifestyle are your best bet for aging gracefully.

French actress Catherine Deneuve's lip area displays signs of wrinkles caused by her smoking habit.

French actress Catherine Deneuve’s lip area displays signs of wrinkles caused by her smoking habit.

1. Stop smoking
When an old man or an old lady loses their teeth, there is less stuff to keep that section of the face “filled out”. This explains the vertical lines and wrinkles around the lips – like they are eating something sour. Smoking creates those lines and hastens the rate at which you lose collagen and elastin.

2. Get the required daily dose of antioxidants and nutrients
Make sure your daily diet is filled with foods that are dense in antioxidants and nutrients. Take your vitamins. And, don’t waste it all by forgetting to use a sunscreen!

3. Start using anti-aging skincare products
We would recommend you do this even if you are in your 20s and your skin is a picture of youth and vitality. Anti-aging skincare doesn’t mean “rich, oily stuff”. The key is to find one that works with your skin type. And, we have just the thing to share with you.

yvesrocherelixir79Yves Rocher Elixir 7.9 Youth Intensifying Serum
Created with 7 active botanicals, this serum has garnered 9 international patents. A bottle is sold every 40 seconds worldwide. It doesn’t say it’s an anti-aging serum. Rather, the term “youth intensifying” should tell you that it is a product hoping to maximize what you’ve got.

The serum looks more like a lotion

The serum looks more like a lotion

When I first opened the bottle, I was surprised by the viscosity of the serum. Instead of being a bit runny like most serums, this one feels more like a lotion. But, don’t let the texture trick you into thinking it’s a rich and pore-clogging.

The serum disappears into the skin almost immediately, and without leaving any residue behind. NOTHING. That’s the only way I can describe how it felt on my skin. After applying it to my skin, it felt like I’ve applied NOTHING. For those of you who FEAR anti-aging products because they are “rich” and “cloying”, this serum will – hopefully – change your mind.

You can use it with your existing skincare products or with the other products in the Elixir 7.9 range.

When I tried this serum, I had just returned from a facial. The extraction process had left my skin slightly red and scabs were beginning to form. I applied the serum before going to bed, avoiding all other kinds of skincare products because I felt I needed to give my skin a break. The next morning, the redness had gone down and my skin looked smoother. The scabs also healed in no time at all.

It’s been roughly a week since I’ve started on this serum, and my skin is softer and a lot calmer. It is less easily irritated by the sun and the air-conditioning in the office. When I wake up in the morning these days, I notice my skin looks well-rested and a lot softer too. And, because it’s so light, I can use it together with another serum (like a brightening one) if I feel my skin could do with an extra dose of TLC.

Yves Rocher Elixir 7.9 Youth Energy Roll-on Eye Care
Another product in this range that I love and will absolutely recommend is the eye cream.

The practical and clever applicator design got me at Hello. I love it when eyecare products come with rollers BUT most leave me disappointed when I discover their rollers won’t stop dispensing the gel/serum/cream, making it difficult for you to enjoy an eye massage without using too much eye cream. For this eye roll-on, simply squeeze a tear-drop size of the gel-cream and then lightly massage it into your eye area with the three roller-balls at the tip.

The rollers massage your eye area WITHOUT dispensing more cream than you need.

The rollers massage your eye area WITHOUT dispensing more cream than you need.

The gel-cream is light and airy and disappeared into the skin in seconds. The metal roller-balls gave an awesome eye massage (just be careful not to exert too much force! You don’t want to end up with bruises on your eye!) that helped relief puffiness and improved circulation around the eyes.

I’m loving the serum and eye roll-on a lot and I intend to start using the day cream and the night cream as soon as my facial trial is over (this is for another story).

Beauty Review: The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Gel – Vanessa Tai

Recently, there was a cut on my left eyelid, which was probably due to me scratching myself in my sleep (hey, it happens!) Anyway, the cut hurt, and soon became scabby. It made applying eye makeup difficult – my eyeshadow would appear uneven and flaky, and when I applied my eyeliner, I had to “dodge” the spot where the cut was.

Probably tired of my endless griping about how this cut was taking forever to heal, Deborah (who sits opposite me in our office) passed me a tube of The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Gel. “Here, use this,” she said, “It will help.”

The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Gel

The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Gel

While I’ve used aloe vera gel to soothe sunburns previously, I never thought to use it on cuts before. This new product from The Body Shop is made from 100% organic aloe vera, so what we’re getting is a pure, concentrated formula. I applied a bead-sized amount of gel on my cut, and the cooling sensation instantly eased the stinging sensation I’ve been enduring for days. Even better, after the gel had dried, I could apply my eye makeup with ease!

Because it’s created with no added fragrance, parabens or colourants, the Aloe Soothing Gel was gentle enough to apply around my eyes, where the skin is more delicate. It’s also suitable if you have sensitive skin. Whether you use it for cuts, skin irritations or sunburns, the cooling sensation and healing properties of aloe vera is sure to help.

Apart from its efficacy, I’ve always liked The Body Shop products because of the good they’re doing for communities around the world. For example, this gel is made with Community Fair Trade 100% organic aloe vera from Guatemala. By trading with the Guastoya farmers in the El Progreso region of Guatemala, The Body Shop helps generate a vital and regular income for the farmers. Some of the funds are also channelled to helping the rest of the community. The community fund has paid for the installation of a water pump to irrigate the farmland of 25 local families, as well as supplied educational materials to over 100 schools in the region.

Back to the cut above my eye. It’s been three days since I started using the product, and I’m happy to report it’s no longer stinging or flaking. In fact, it’s almost completely healed. Now, to find a way to stop scratching my eyes at night …

Eye Colours For Every Day – Vanessa Tai

When it comes to eyeliners, I usually stick to the fail-safe shades of black or brown. I’m sure you can identify. Mornings are usually a mad rush to get out of the house; we don’t have time to play around with various eye colours. Or so I thought. When Maybelline sent us their latest range of eye colours – Color Show Crayon Khol – the bright hues were too tempting not to try out. So, I decided to do a little experiment to see how I could fit these colours into my everyday life.

The colours that I used.

The colours that I used.

Day 1: Rushing out stories in the office

Electric Blue Eyeliner

Pardon my messy hair. As you can tell, grooming takes a backseat during deadline week. However, I loved how the electric blue shade added a zing to my eyes, and made me look much more awake and vibrant.

Day 2: Photo Shoot at Tiffany & Co.

Soft blue

Soft Blue Eyeliner

On this day, we were involved in a photo shoot at Tiffany & Co. Since one of the Maybelline shades was similar to Tiffany’s classic robin egg blue, I decided to try it on. There’s something about this particular shade of blue that gives off that sweet, romantic appeal. Great colour for first dates, methinks!

Day 3: Taking a walk on the wild side

Orange Eyeliner

When I first saw the bright orange eyeliner, I thought to myself, “There’s no way I can pull off this hue!” But on this day, I was wearing my favourite dress with the scary jaguar print, and I thought, “Why not try a bolder shade today?” The trick to wearing bold eye colours is to make sure the rest of your makeup is quite simple and pared-down.

Day 4: Casual Fridays

White Eyeliner

For this final look, I decided to experiment by blending a bit of green eyeshadow with the white shade. White eyeliner is great for lining your inner eye corner or inner water line to make your eyes appear brighter and slightly more elongated.

See, it isn’t that difficult to introduce colours into your daily beauty regime! I hope this post has inspired you to step out of your beauty comfort zone.

[Material World X The Body Shop] Skincare Tips For The Party Season – Deborah Tan

Nothing beats 8 hours of sleep so be sure you get enough of it this festive season!

Nothing beats 8 hours of sleep so be sure you get enough of it this festive season!

And what do you know? IT’S DECEMBER, ALREADY!

The month of feasting, partying, celebrating and vacationing is upon us and we should all be ready to face it – literally – with glowing complexions and radiant smiles. And if your skin is … ummm … a little on the unsatisfactory side, help is here in the form of The Body Shop’s awesome skincare offerings. Yes, the party season isn’t only about makeup and colours, it’s also about making sure your skin gets the best care it requires so you can put your best face forward.

Below are four common skin crises women in Singapore often suffer from during the festive season, and the recommended remedies from The Body Shop that can help you ride them out with ease.

1. A Surprise Attack By The Pimple Parade

What happened?!?
Your hormones are being thrown off balance with all that stress trying to plan the Party Of The Year. When that happens, it’s inevitable the zits will come a-visiting. If you are concerned with over-drying, then The Body Shop’s award-winning Tea Tree range of products are definitely made for you in mind. Promising clearer skin in 3 days without causing over-drying, The Body Shop’s community fair trade tea tree oil is harvested by a collective of Kenyan farmers, half of them women. Through this initiative, the community is able to work on projects to improve its living standards.

Try These:
1. The Body Shop Tea Tree Cool & Creamy Wash, $20.90
The creamy texture cleanses the skin without stripping it of moisture. You’ll love the cool, refreshing feel as you massage the cleanser on your skin. It doesn’t lather up into a foamy wash but it still effectively melts away any oil and dirt.

2. The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil, $18.90
Target your zits the natural way with this best-seller and award-winner. The anti-bacterial property of pure tea tree oil will soothe and clear blemished skin without causing any irritation or dryness.

Screen shot 2013-12-03 at PM 01.20.572. Your Skin Is Destination Inhospitable

What happened?!?
With an event happening every day and every night, it’s no wonder your skin is screaming, “Gimme a break!” If you’re finding it hard to put on your makeup (the foundation just wouldn’t stay on, for example), try to prep your skin with a few drops of super-hydrating serum.

Try This:
The Body Shop Nutriganics Drops Of Youth, $58.90
A lightweight serum made from community traded babassu oil and plant stem cells of criste-marine, a plant found on the rocky Brittany coastline, Drops Of Youth improves surface skin condition by improving smoothness and firmness. It’s hydrating and softens skin so that it can be well prepped for your makeup again.

3. Can Someone Please Turn The Radiance Switch On?

What happened?!?
All this joy and happiness surrounding you, you’d think it’s easy to spot a glow, right? No. All the partying and late nights can exert a toll on your skin. Because you’re not resting enough, your immune system is trying to keep your major organs healthy and so has no time to repair your skin. Cue dull skin and tired-looking eyes.

Try These:
1. The Body Shop Vitamin C Facial Radiance Capsules, $45.90 for 28 capsules
After cleansing your face, twist open a capsule of this, massage the serum into your skin before applying your usual night cream. Its power combo on camu camu berry, orange oil and blackcurrant extract will feed your skin with a dose of restorative vitamin C as you sleep.

2. The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Boost, $39.90
Containing camu camu berry – which boasts 20 times more vitamin C than an orange, this light gel can be used before your daily moisturiser to give your skin the help it needs to survive the day, and help you look radiant while you’re going about your errands.

the body shop vitamin e face mist 4. Wanted: Extra, Extra, Extra TLC

What happened?!?
Sorry to break this news to you: your skin would really rather prefer to stay home. Because out there, it is subjected to smoke, pollution, and a whole host of environmental aggressors, which could then lead to early signs of ageing on the skin. What you need is to set your makeup with fine mist of vitamin E to neutralise cell-damaging free radicals.

Try This:
The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist, $20.90
With its mild rosewater scent, this face mist is moisture and skin protection on-call. Mist it over your face after makeup to help set the colours, or use it after a day out in the sun or walking along the busy streets. With glycerine and liposomes to help restore skin’s moisture balance, your skin will be soothed and protected all day and all night long!
