Beauty Review: Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins – Deborah Tan

Are you religious with your night cream? Deborah Tan admits she isn’t … but … she may just have found The One in Origins’ new High Potency Night-A-Mins.

I think I have found THE night cream of my dreams. Night creams are tricky business for me because I often find them too rich for my skin. For those who don’t sleep in air-conditioned rooms, you may find using night creams – which tend to have a richer consistency than their Day sisters – result in you waking up to a thin film of oil on your face. I could use a night cream with a less rich texture, but often, these feel inadequate and not soothing enough.

I’m at the age where I want my night cream to be everything without being oily. I want my night cream to (1) have lots of skin-loving benefits (2) have a relaxing scent and (3) be able to give my skin a nice, rested glow in the morning.

When Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins arrived at my desk about a month and a half ago, I couldn’t wait to get home to try it.

High Potency Night A Mins Mineral-enriched Oil-free Renewal CreamThe Science
Night creams often have more potent, richer ingredients because our skin’s temperature and metabolic rate are at their highest at night. As a result, we lose more moisture and produce more free radicals. Night-A-Mins is a mineral- and vitamins-packed cream formulated with a blend of skin-fortifying antioxidants that’ll help strengthen the skin at night so it’ll be better able to protect itself during the day. It is oil-free yet it plumps up skin with hydration with ingredients that replenish its moisture reserves.

The minerals and vitamins that can be found in Night-A-Mins include Salicylic Acid (to help slough away surface dead skin cells), Fennel Seed (to tighten skin), Vitamin C (to fight free radicals), Vitamin H (to promote overall skin health), Calcium (to seal in moisture and defend skin against future dehydration), and Magnesium (to soothe dry skin).

The Scent
The ingredients may be what make Night-A-Mins a highly effective night cream but it is its scent that won me over. It contains an essential oil blend of neroli, which promotes tranquility, valerian, to relieve nervous tension, orange, which conveys positive feelings and happiness, and vanilla, known to relax and soothe irritability.

I love the scent and it is to this delicious cloud of sweet dream-inducing fragrance that I look forward to at the end of every day. Suddenly, bedtime is an event that I look forward to! On weekends, I even use this cream as a day moisturizer so I’ll feel more relaxed and calm!

In fact, it was found in an Actigraph study (an actigraph is a “wristwatch” device  that measures how many tosses and turns you do while you sleep) that almost all panelists experienced a more restful night with longer, more tranquil sleep when they applied Night-A-Mins before bed.

For your best night of sleep ... ever!

For your best night of sleep … ever!

Using It
Dole out a pearl-sized dollop of Night-A-Mins after cleansing and treating your skin. Gently warm the cream – this will help your skin absorb it better and release its relaxing scent – by rubbing your hands together BRIEFLY and then press it firmly into the skin on your face and neck. Massage the cream into your skin with soft upward motions. Then cup your hands around your nose and inhale deeply to experience the scent.

I’ve been using Night-A-Mins for close to two months now and I’m glad to report that I have stuck to it. The gel-cream texture doesn’t grease up the face and it allows those with oily skins to enjoy the rich, skin-repairing benefits of a high potency night cream. The scent makes this cream a joy to use. I notice how my cheeks look rosier and healthier in the mornings while the skin at my forehead and night look smoother and softer. There is little noticeable improvement in lift and firmness, but these you can remedy with a weekly use of skin firming mask or a dose of anti-ageing serum before using this night cream.

I’d recommend Night-A-Mins for women who want to use high potency night creams but have not been able to find out suitable for use in non air-conditioned rooms and for our humid weather.

Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-enriched oil-free renewal cream retails at $55 for a 50ml jar at TANGS Vivocity, Robinsons Orchard, Robinsons JEM, Robinsons Raffles City, Isetan Scotts and Metro Paragon.

D is for Dolce

As it is not too overpowering, it’s a great scent of everyday use.

Cleansing is the most important step and here’s one that’ll help you keep the zits at bay.

In hot and humid urban Singapore, it’s no wonder that many of us suffer from acne even as adults. Laneige Trouble Relief Line is a skincare line specially formulated for acne-prone skin. The star ingredient here is the Hinoki Cypress Polysaccharide extract to help reduce the growth of the bacteria responsible for causing acne. Our favourite product is the Cleansing Tissue. Use with a little water to create lather before using it on your skin. For an acne product, we loved how soft, clear, and moisturised it left our skin after use.

T for Too Faced

toofaced-mascaraThis mascara by Too Faced has made some rather bold claims – the most obvious being its name, Better Than Sex. And, based on the consumer study results, there was a 1,944-percent increase in lash volume, with 100 percent of the participants reporting dramatic volume and longer lashes. Lili, who claims to be “lash-deprived” was more than excited to try out this mascara. The first thing you’ll notice is its hourglass-shaped brush. Shaped after the silhouette of a woman, the brush was designed to separate, coat and curl each lash. This mascara has also got a long-wearing, smudge-proof formula with Acia Senegal tree extract to nourish the lashes. Application was a breeze; one single coat was enough to plump up and lengthen her sparse lashes. “While I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s better than sex, it is one of the better mascaras I’ve tried,” says Lili.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is available at Sephora outlets islandwide.

The Beauty Junkie’s Christmas Wishlist – Deborah Tan

Call me a sucker for packaging but I really love it when brands make an effort to decorate their Christmas sets with delightful art. Looking into the shops and seeing all these colours and festive motifs really drives up the desire to blow some serious cash on shopping. Gift sets are also convenient options for those who are a bit clumsy with wrapping paper and ribbons (yep, that’s me you’re looking at). Having received loads of Christmas press releases over the last two months, I am going to do a Show & Tell here on the most attractive beauty gift sets to buy!

1. Kiehl’s

Kiehl's x Haze Every year, Kiehl’s would collaborate with a celebrated artist to design its holiday packaging and limited edition products. This year, the brand enlists the help of Eric Haze, whose works have been seen on the album covers of The Beastie Boys and L.L Cool J. The Kiehl’s X Haze designs can be seen on the Ultra Facial Cream and the Calendula Toner, and the gift boxes you can fill with other Kiehl’s products.

2. Biotherm

Screen shot 2013-11-29 at PM 09.55.02
Another collaboration with an artist. This time, Biotherm with Stockholm-based illustrator Kari Moden. Three of the brand’s best loved classics receive the festive holiday look along with pouches and gift boxes. Part of the proceeds from this limited edition collection will go towards Mission Blue to fund research on ocean acidification.

3. The Body Shop

The Gingerbread School HouseI cannot say enough how important it is to buy a present that also gives back to the community. The Body Shop makes it so simple to do something good while buying something beautiful. Part of the proceeds from the sale of its Christmas sets will go towards The Gingerbread School House Project. Personal favourite: The Ginger Sparkle range is so addictive.

4. Origins

As its way of encouraging customers to recycle their gift boxes, Origins is making the extra effort this year to design packaging so pretty, you can transform them into cards or Christmas tree decorations. The Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega Relief is an especially meaningful buy since Dr. Weil donates all his after-tax profits to integrative medicine research.

5. Bliss

Stocking stuffers are usually a bit meh. But with a little bit of shopping, you can find great small gifts that are guaranteed crowd-pleasers. Bliss has three of these that anyone would love to receive: Mistletoe Must-Haves, Winter Wonder-Hands, Merry Kiss-Mas, and each is under $20.

So there you have it – my Top 5 beautiful Christmas beauty gift sets that will surely bring a joy to the heart of whoever receives them. My friends, you know what you’ll be getting this Christmas!!! :))

Beauty Review: Origins Smarty Plants CC SPF 20 PA++ – Deborah Tan

This month, Origins launches its first CC cream. Now, you may have gone, “Another one?” but, given that there are so many skin concerns/types/tones/problems, it is always good to have more options. A while ago, BB creams were the talk of town (and in fact, they still are). Then the emergence of CC creams gave rise to a very key discussion in beauty: What are the differences between the two?

For one, BB creams tend to have a heavier texture and coverage compared to CC creams. The names are self-explanatory that way. BB means blemish balm, CC says colour correct. So if your complexion is marred by very obvious zits and scars, perhaps BB creams are more suited for you. If your complexion tends to be sallow, uneven, blotchy, a CC cream should suffice.

Both BB creams and CC creams of today come oozing with skincare benefits and are available in a number of great textures, so I wouldn’t go as far to say that CC creams are better than their predecessors. Because of the options available to us, I strongly recommend you try as many as your budget and time allow to find the perfect one for you.

For me, I hated the “greyish undertone” the older BB creams tend to have so I always, always check for colour first. For Denise, she was told by a makeup artist that it is very difficult to find base makeup that suited her skin tone so she tends to be skeptical about the “one shade suits all” concept. For Lili, she has super-dry skin so texture and hydrating benefits are top on her list.

The folks at Origins are very confident of their CC creams and insisted that it will please the three of us. Before we show you the results, a picture to explain why this CC cream is so “powerful”:

How smart is Origins' new CC cream?

How smart is Origins’ new CC cream?

More than just a colour product, this CC cream is supposedly “smart”. The magic starts when you apply the CC cream. Depending on how much pressure you apply – an intuitive act since we tend to focus more on problematic areas – the cream releases just the right amount of pigments to correct your skin tone. Then, as you go about your daily business, it releases vitamins and antioxidants every time your skin gets exposed to harmful stuff like UV rays and pollutions. Finally, instead of just dumping a whole load of ingredients at once onto your skin, it contains time-released capsules containing salicylic acid (great for those with oily, acne-prone skin) and chestnut extract to refine your complexion.

Our reviews:

“Blended perfectly with my skin tone!” Denise Li
I’ve never been sold to the idea of BB or CC creams because I could never find one that matches my skin tone. I found myself pleasantly surprised at Origins’ CC cream. It blended perfectly into my skin, gave me a dewy finish, and has pretty good coverage despite its lightweight texture! You can even see that it’s evened out the ruddy patches of my skin and covered my acne scars. The only thing I didn’t like was that my skin did not stay matte for long. I would avoid using this on my oily T-zone in future.

“A dream to apply” Tan Lili
Because of my dry skin, I usually have to spend a while prepping my skin till it’s “foundation-ready”. Often, I just skip makeup altogether because it takes too much time! I found this CC cream a dream to apply – it was very easy to blend. The slight hydrating benefits also meant that my skin didn’t “crack” or flake. However, I would love for it to be more moisturising so I can finally achieve dewy-looking skin.

“Just nice for a day of light makeup” Deborah Tan
The picture you see here is me wearing only Origins CC cream and eyebrow makeup. No blusher, no highlighter. I love that it tames down my natural flush without completely hiding it so I look as if I still have blusher on. This CC cream keeps my skin soft and hydrated throughout the day and, being prone to acne and excess shine, I like the idea of salicylic acid being released gradually into my skin.

Origins products are formulated without parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petroleum paraffin, and animal ingredients (except cruelty-free honey and beeswax). The CC creams were given to Material World for review purposes in conjunction with its launch this month. You may read our advertising policy here.

Beauty Review: Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer – Deborah Tan

Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer, $50

Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer, $50

I remember – with much fondness – the day after I had my very first facial done. I was 18 and my aunt took me to a spa and treated me to a facial. Maybe it’s youth, maybe it’s the pampering goodness of the facial products, but my skin glowed beautifully the next day. Over the years, with age and stress, my skin gradually assumed an ashen pallor that could only be concealed with the careful application of blusher and highlighter.

Last week, I met up with Fangwen from Origins who passed me the brand’s newest moisturiser – GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer. Created to “wake up” tired skin that has turned dull and listless from late nights and stress, this citrusy smelling, light-textured gel-cream contains panax ginseng and caffeine to help jumpstart skin’s hydration levels and microcirculation.

Other ingredients inside this oil-, paraben-, phthlates-, mineral oil-free moisturiser:
1. Olive
2. Wheat
3. Barley
4. Grapefruit oil
5. Spearmint oil
6. Lemon oil

The first day I tried this moisturiser, I applied my makeup with my usual amount of blush applied to my cheekbones. As I drove out to my meetings, I stole a glance at my reflection in the rearview mirror and saw that my face was indeed ruddier than normal. In the picture below (taken without makeup), I found the my skin also looks a lot smoother and brighter after using the moisturiser (see the differences in the left cheek area and the general forehead area). The rosiness in my cheeks is also a lot more obvious.

Before GinZing (left); After GinZing (right)

Before GinZing (left); After GinZing (right)

Overall, I like the scent and the hydrating ability of GinZing best. The grapefruit scent made it a treat to use in my morning skincare regime. At $50 a jar, this moisturiser is a great investment for those who want to use products containing natural, certified organic ingredients, manufactured using earth-friendly practices.

In need of a beauty wakeup call for your skin? Then you’ve got to get your hands on a jar of Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer! Each jar is worth $50 and we have four bottles to give away.
