A 6-in-1 skin lotion, this watery product promises to be a multi-functioning skin elixir for those with oily and combination complexions. This essence contains 94 percent fermented soybean extract obtained through 300 days of natural fermentation in a volcanic claypot atop Mount Halla in Jeju Island.

WE LOVE: That it’s free of parabens, animal ingredients, minerals, colorants and artificial fragrance. The essence feels incredibly refreshing on the skin. What blew us away was the video the brand shared at its launch. To show how it strengthens the barrier function, the researchers soaked an eye yolk in the essence for 24 hours. After a day, they picked up the egg yolk and dropped it onto a plate. The yolk did not break up, proving this essence is indeed capable of strengthening your skin.

 

#3 Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate 
As explained before, hydration is extremely important when it comes to maintaining healthy, younger-looking skin. This potent hydrating serum from Kiehl’s penetrates 10 layers of skin and awakens channels of moisture transportation that have grown weak due to age. Using a combination of plant-based glycerin and shiso leaf extract, this serum anchors water in skin to turn dry, papery-thin, ageing skin into youthful, plump skin again!

WE LOVE: That it made our skins softer and smoother to the touch within just one day of use. And, unlike most anti-ageing products that focus on erasing wrinkles or improving lift, Ultimune talks about strong skin being good skin. This is definitely a refreshing way to look at preserving your beauty through the years.

WE LOVE: How easily absorbed this serum in oil is. It’s not even a “if you sleep in air-conditioned room” product. This serum in oil works beautifully in air-conditioned and non air-conditioned rooms. It gets first on our list this month because one night was all it took to see a significant improvement in the texture and glow of our skins. Bumps on foreheads disappeared after just one night. Definitely a gem to have if you feel your skin is in need of a good dose of ultra pampering.

5 Reasons This Is 2014’s Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin – Deborah Tan

In the beauty race to be this year’s best products, Deborah Tan has found her winner for “Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin” in Kiehl’s new and improved Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream.

We are not halfway into June and, here I am, casting my vote for “2014’s Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin”. To be honest, when Kiehl’s launched the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream a couple of years ago, I was ambivalent, to say the least. While it wasn’t as rich as the classic Ultra Facial Cream, it didn’t exactly have the best texture where oil-free, super hydrating moisturisers were concerned.

But this year, the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream has been given a face-lift (hurhur …). The texture is lighter, more watery, and most importantly, it is absorbed very easily by the skin. Still doesn’t explain why this is THE BEST moisturiser for oily skin? Be patient. Read on.

1. Say “Goodbye” To Schizo Skin
My skin acts up whenever I have to fly. How is it possible for skin to be flaky and oily at the same time?!? I tried the new Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream on a recent flight to Japan and was pleased to find it helped kept my skin smooth, soft and shine-free throughout.

2. Preps Skin Nicely For Makeup
The key to a natural-looking base makeup? Moisturiser. And you need just the right type and amount. Too rich and your makeup won’t stay on for long, too dry and you end up with a cakey finish. This moisturiser preps the skin so it’s supple enough for your foundation.

3. Keeps Skin Matte For A Very Long Time 
The principle behind why we need to hydrate our skin is because thirsty skin produces more oil as a way of compensating for the dryness. Most hydrating moisturisers I’ve tried have never successfully kept my skin shine-free for more than a couple of hours. With Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, I found my face stayed matte and fresh through an entire day of going in and out of air-conditioned offices and into the open.

4. A Relief On Super Hot Days
Do you find your skin crying out for cool relief on afternoons when the mercury hits 35 and above? I certainly do. I keep a jar of this moisturiser on my office desk so I can freshen up after coming in from the sun. The moisturiser sinks into the skin so easily, all you need to do is pat any perspiration off and dab this soothing balm onto your skin. Ahhhh …. sweet relief!

5. Feels Great On Necks
My neck area is prone to oiliness, especially in the more humid months. However, I’m well past the age bracket where I can afford to neglect the area. This moisturiser is powerful enough for the neck area if you want something that hydrates without leaving a sticky film behind.

I started using Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free on May 7. It’s been a month and I have noticed these improvements to my skin:
1. It stays calm even if I go from cool, dry air-conditioning into the hot and humid outdoors 
2. It flushes less easily
3. It doesn’t get shiny or oily in the afternoon
4. Makeup goes on more easily and stays on longer

Verdict:
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream keeps my skin hydrated no matter where I am. Mid-day oil slicks have become a thing of the past and I love how my complexion is so much calmer now. I strongly recommend this moisturiser for anyone who wants to keep their skins well-hydrated whatever the climate or temperature.

Beauty Review: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration – Denise Li

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration is made for those with dry skin. So why exactly is Denise – perennial sufferer of oily combination skin – raving about it?

I’ve been struggling with a whole host of skin-related issues in the past few months. My skin looks dull because my pores are clogged, I’ve been even more prone to whiteheads and blackheads than usual, and I’ve also had to deal with some massive whoppers where zits were concerned.

I put it down to my skin being oilier than usual. Perhaps it is playing havoc because it doesn’t like being subjected to UV rays and pollution one minute, then being in a freezing cold air-conditioned environment the next?

So, imagine how surprised I was when I had my skin analysed just before a facial a couple of months ago. “You have combination skin,” declared the facialist, “But some parts are dehydrated.”

Naturally, I panicked. This was uncharted territory: oily skin, I knew how to deal with. But dehydrated skin?

After doing some sleuthing, I found out that there is a HUGE difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is skin that doesn’t secrete enough oil. Dehydrated skin, however, can happen to anyone regardless of skin type and here’s why: the skin’s outermost layer is compromised, which can be attributed to a whole host of factors including sun exposure, or using the wrong type of skincare products. See, products made for oily skin often contain ingredients that dry out or irritate the skin, affecting its barrier function. As a result, skin loses its ability to retain moisture. Hence, oily AND dehydrated skin.

I wondered how my skin was going to fare just before I left for Europe in December, so it was timely that Nicolette from Kiehl’s passed me a bottle of their Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration just before I left.

This product is supposed to help improve skin’s barrier function, while retaining a super lightweight texture. I think Dr Geoff Genesky, head of Kiehl’s Skin Care Laboratory, Research and Innovation Manager said it best when he said, “I compare the technology in this product to today’s high tech sports fabrics. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay ascended Mount Everst carrying with them close to 20kg each. Explorers making that same climb today would only need to carry half of that weight thanks to lighter high-tech fabrics and technology that offer support benefits without excess weight.”

During my trip to Europe, I took the opportunity to give my skin a break and pared down my skincare regime. While I was tempted to layer hydrating serum upon hydrating serum on my face and apply yet another moisturising mask every couple of days, I really didn’t know how my skin would act in the cool, dry climate. So, my skincare regime comprised of just two steps: cleansing, and moisturising with the Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration.

True to its claims, it had a really light texture that took less than a minute to sink into my skin. Yet, my skin immediately softer, smoother and more supple. I used it day and night, and I didn’t need to re-apply it at all, even though my skin was subject to harsh, “whipping” winds when I was out walking on the street.

In the two weeks that I was in Europe, my skin was more calm and looked more radiant than it had ever been. After a couple of days, I even found it in me to skip my daily staple – foundation.

The secret of this moisturiser lies in Enriched Hyaluronic Acid. And, based on the consumer study results, there was a 1,944-percent increase in lash volume, with 100 percent of the participants reporting dramatic volume and longer lashes. Lili, who claims to be “lash-deprived” was more than excited to try out this mascara. The first thing you’ll notice is its hourglass-shaped brush. Shaped after the silhouette of a woman, the brush was designed to separate, coat and curl each lash. This mascara has also got a long-wearing, smudge-proof formula with Acia Senegal tree extract to nourish the lashes. Application was a breeze; one single coat was enough to plump up and lengthen her sparse lashes. “While I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s better than sex, it is one of the better mascaras I’ve tried,” says Lili.

Growing up, I always saw the rose as a cheesy flower. The flower silly girls insist their boyfriends buy them, the flower girls pretending to be sophisticated love, the flower boring people choose. Whenever friends asked me what my favourite flower was, I would sniffed at any suggestion that the rose could be mine. I didn’t like the rose because people associated it with romance and love, I didn’t like the rose because of all the silly meanings attached to it.

But as you grow older, you come to realise that being obstinately resistant to something just because it’s popular is silly as well. It’s like a desperate cry that says, “I’m different. Really!” Although the rose still doesn’t rank as one of my favourite blooms, I have become one of those who appreciate just how well-rounded a flower it really is.

It’s beautiful and its uncomplicated look makes it a great decoration choice. Compared to the hydrangea or the peony, it’s hardier and it lasts longer in a bouquet. And then, there is the scent.

I know what you’re thinking. Rose = bandung, right? Not so. A true rose scent – not a chemical composition – is divine. If you’ve not come into contact with a well-made rose essential oil, you need to find a chance to do so. Because it is only when you have had a sniff at pure rose essential oil, can you begin to appreciate the heady, intoxicating scent of the flower WITHOUT the saccharine overtones.

I like the scent of rose but I don’t like it when it’s mixed with other notes, as with what you’ll find in most perfumes. If I like a particular note, I don’t want it to change or morph into another scent. So, when Nicolette from Kiehl’s told me about the brand’s new Aromatic Blends, Patchouli & Fresh Rose, I was very excited.

To ensure that the scent really lasts, layering is important. This means taking a shower with the cleanser, which is also formulated without sulfate-based surfectants, massaging on the body lotion, and then spritzing on the EDT. I found the entire experience luxurious and utterly blissful. Lost in the heady scent of the rose, I felt as pampered as I would be in a spa.

At the launch last year of Aromatic Blends, we were asked to pick out our favourite scent. Although I liked the Orange Flower & Lychee, and Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit ones, I didn’t really have a clear favourite. 10 Minutes With … George Young – Denise Li

Over here at Material World, we’re huge fans of George Young. Okay, so maybe him having a beautiful face and hot bod is part of the reason, but mostly, it’s because he’s one of the most down-to-earth and personable celebs around. He also happens to be one big-hearted guy. This year marks the second year running that George is collaborating with Kiehl’s to help raise funds for Autism Association (Singapore) and to help promote the awareness of autism here. We caught up with him recently to find out more about this partnership.

You’re partnering with Kiehl’s for the second year running to help spread awareness of autism. What are your thoughts on this partnership?

The first time Kiehl’s and I partnered up, it was through the magic of synchronicity: two of my younger brothers are autistic, and I was looking for a way to spread the awareness of autism and to help raise money for those who care for people with the condition. Kiehl’s was looking to do the same thing. This year, we both know we can work together well to help raise money for a cause that doesn’t get the attention it requires to help those with autism. I’m so pleased that this year, there are more people on board: ELLE Singapore, Michelle Chong, and Jean & Mike from Class 95FM.

What inspired your design for the packaging of the Limited Edition Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque?

I wanted to create something that was relevant to autism; something that would broadcast a simple message into the minds of those who laid their eyes on the design. I figured that many people may not be aware of the global prevalence of autism – that an estimated 1 in 100 people are diagnosed with some form of autism. So I wanted something that would put that statistic out there. That’s where the (rather abstract) chrysanthemum came about: I drew exactly 100 petals in the design (it took a few tries and a few miscounts), and made one of those petals the same baby blue shade that is used for World Autism Awareness Day. 1 in 100: the message is there in the design!

Can you share what it was like growing up with two autistic brothers?

I have three brothers in total, two of whom are autistic – Andrew is non-linguistic (has no language ability), and Paul has some basic language ability. Growing up with Andrew and Paul was normal to me and my other brother because we were all close in age and it was part of our everyday life. It was only as we all got a little older that we asked questions such as “Why don’t Andrew and Paul communicate like I see everyone else communicate?”, and “Why do Andrew and Paul have to throw a tantrum in the middle of a shopping mall?” that it became clear they were different.

There was a lot of frustration that needed to be dealt with. Frustration for both Andrew and Paul, as well as the rest of the family. This  frustration was borne from the fact that we couldn’t communicate with each other effectively. This is what leads to a majority of the tantrums that Andrew and Paul throw, and the anger and exasperation on the rest of the family’s side that we can’t just know what’s wrong or reassure them that everything’s alright; or even just share stories about each other’s day to day lives. I would love to one day just be able to sit with my brothers and have a full-on conversation with them, and hear their memories about growing up with us. With the right therapies, and innovations and discoveries of how the brains of autistic people function, perhaps that will one day be possible.

What do you think are some of autism’s biggest myths?

There are lots of myths surrounding autism. I’ve heard some doozies in my time. One that always sticks in my mind is that autism is a cause of bad parenting. Wow. Well I think that my family is a great case study showing how that isn’t the case: my parents had four kids, we were all brought up the same way growing up, and exactly two of us are autistic and two of us aren’t. Myth busted.

Some people also believe that all autistic people have some special ability, or are savants. Not all savants are autistic, and not all autistic people are savants. Although it’s true that some high functioning autistic people have been able to see the world differently because of their autism, and are able to translate that unique perspective of the world into something that may seem extraordinary to those without autism, those people with autism who may possess a particular skill have it because they are a person with a particular skill, not because they’re autistic.

What’s the one thing you want people to know about autism?

Those with autism are people first and foremost – they just see the world a bit differently than those without the condition, and have a whole bunch of potential that requires a little more attention to unlock.

Any other thoughts that you’d like to add?
