NewsFASH: What You’ll Be Wearing this Fall – Denise Li

This list is making us want to hit the shops, STAT. By Denise Li

Do Fall collections bring to mind long sleeves, drab colours, and cuts that are just waaaay too warm for Singapore weather? We’re pleased to inform you that it doesn’t have to be so. H&M’s collection runs the gamut: From fun, feminine maxi dresses, to menswear-inspired pieces, and even … a fire-engine red PVC trousers (if that’s your thing). If you like asymmetrical hemlines and unusual silhouettes, you can’t go wrong at Whole9Yards. Don’t want to add to your bulging closet? Update your look with a few statement accessories or shoes from On Pedder. Just because summer’s come and gone doesn’t mean you can’t continue having fun with fashion!

10 Minutes With … Face Hunter – Denise Li

facehunterbook

Material World was invited to H&M at Orchard Building yesterday for the book launch of Yvan Rodic, better known as Face Hunter. Titled A Year in the Life of Facehunter, it’s the second book by one of the pioneering – and undoubtedly one of the most influential – street style photographers to date.

Now, to say that this man is well-travelled is a huge understatement. He has, after all, circled the globe more than 10 times, covering an average of two to three countries a week … talk about being a citizen of the world!

When asked how one should go about creating a personal style, he said, “It’s all about creating harmony, and not blindly copying what you see in magazines or on the runway.” He adds that the most memorable person he’s shot to date is a young shop owner in Torino, Italy for her elegant yet innovative and surprising style. “It’s not just about looking like a hipster,” he laughs.

What I really like about Face Hunter’s shots is that they are as much about the energy his subjects emit as they are about the clothes. You’ll find that in many instances, it’s the expression of pure joy, love, or wonder on his subjects’ faces that stand out more than what they’re wearing.

That’s me, with Face Hunter, Yvan Rodic.

But to say that this book is all about fashion would not be doing it justice. It’s as much a travelogue and homage to Yvan’s favourite cities around the world, and he has an uncanny ability to capture that mood and je ne sais quoi of a place, whether he’s shooting a hipster in a torn white t-shirt in Tokyo, girls on their way to a party in Madrid, or children playing in a street in Cape Town. And it’s that raw, snapped-in-the-moment quality of his photos that bring them to life with a kind of vividness and poetry. While the 320-page book is made up largely of pictures, each chapter also opens up with a description about the city, with Yvan’s personal anecdotes and observations thrown in.

I’d definitely thumb through my copy, not just when I’m in dire need of fashion inspiration, but when I’m thinking about where to go for my next trip.
