[A Sweet Pair] Penhaligon’s High Tea for 2 at The Marmalade Pantry

The emotional support that a breast cancer sufferer receives while she’s on the road to recovery is important. According to a 2007 study published in the journal Psycho-Oncology, new breast cancer patients often experience a drop in social and emotional support during the first year after diagnosis. Friends and acquaintances may find themselves at a loss of what to do, how to react, and what to say. Rarely, however, do they intend to hurt you.

But know this: social-emotional support is a great stress reducer and might improve a patient’s chance against cancer recurrence, says Candyce H. Kroenke, the author of a study that examines the link between social ties and survival after breast cancer diagnosis.

Material World started this “A Sweet Pair” campaign to drive home the message that breast cancer patients should not have to go through their ordeals alone. Whether you’re a friend of or family to a sufferer, your role as her “cheerleader” is crucial in her path to recovery. A simple act – like spending time together watching TV – can have a great and positive effect on the patient. It tells her that she is not isolated and that people are there for her.

This month, through “A Sweet Pair”, make a promise to be a pillar of support to anyone you know suffering from breast cancer.

[A Sweet Pair] Savour This Amazing Tiramisu from Da Paolo Gastronomia

If you’ve not been for a mammogram before, just the thought can be a little daunting, especially if you’ve heard people say that it hurts. While some women might suffer discomfort for that few moments that the breast is compressed and the X-ray is taken, those few uncomfortable moments can save your life in the long run, as it can detect the cancer early.

Women who find out that they have breast cancer through mammograms are more likely to benefit from breast-conserving therapies (as opposed to having to go for a masectomy), and are less likely to die from the disease. In fact, the survival rate of Stage 1 breast cancer is 99% at five years, as opposed to Stage III, where the survival rate drops to 57%.

[A Sweet Pair] Tuck Into Swensen’s Ice Cream Buffet

Did you know that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Singapore? Every year, an approximate 1,500 women get diagnosed with the disease. This year, in order to encourage women over the age of 50 to get a screening mammogram done, the Singapore Cancer Society is offering a $25 subsidy for those who get their breasts screened between the months of October and December. Brochures containing these subsidy coupons can be found at the Singapore Cancer Society and at selected Guardian, The Body Shop, Metro, Sorella Lingerie and Pierre Cardin Lingerie.

“It’s too painful”, “I feel healthy”, and “I have no time” are the Top 3 excuses given by women for not going for a mammogram screening.

If your mum is 50 and above, and have not done a mammogram screening before, why not make an appointment and go along with her? After that, spend some mother-daughter time together by treating yourselves to a great dessert.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here at Material World, we’re all about getting and being informed about the disease, which is the most common cancer among Singaporean women.

Here are some other need-to-know facts*:

  • Every 19 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer
  • In the early stages of breast cancer, there is usually no pain, and there are no symptoms. As the cancer progresses, it could manifest in the form of a persistent lump in the breast or armpit area, a newly-retracted nipple, changes in the colour or skin of the breast, areola or nipple, blood or discharge from the nipple, or a change in shape or size of the breast.
  • A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, and is more common among women 40 years and above. However, there have been women here in their early 20s who have been diagnosed with it too.
  • Some studies have shown that drinking alcohol regularly can increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. This is because alcohol interferes with the way the body metabolises oestrogen, causing blood oestrogen levels to rise and therefore increasing the risk of cancer. Women are therefore advised to limit to limit their intake of alcohol.
  • Exercise may help to enhance the immune system’s ability to kill cancer cells or slow their growth rate. Try to work out at low to moderate levels at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time.
  • Breast cancer is highly curable at its early stages, so be sure to perform a breast self-examination at least once a month. Try to do it 7 to 10 days after the start of your menses as this is when your breasts will be least tender. For the steps on how to perform this self-exam, click this link.
