[Press Trip] Here’s A Beauty Story All Women Need To Read. Especially If You’re 35 Years Old – Deborah Tan

When it comes to maintaining a radiant, ageless complexion, no one does it better than the Korean ladies. Deborah Tan visits home of beloved Korean skincare brand Sulwhasoo to find out just what is it that gives the Korean ladies their beautiful skin.

Me with the beautiful and ageless Ms Jeon Ji-soo.

Me with the beautiful and ageless Ms Jeon Ji-soo.

Korean beauty brand Sulwhasoo has a beauty fact that might just give you sleepless nights. According to its researchers, due to decreasing “yin” energy, a woman’s skin becomes dehydrated and starts to age faster once she turns 35 (cue horror music!). To counter this, the brand has launched a new product – Luminature Essential Finisher – this month. Inspired by the “mi-an”, a beauty lotion used by ancient Korean women as a last step to their skincare regime, Luminature Essential Finisher doesn’t just give your complexion a luminizing boost, it strengthens skin’s metabolism and helps seal in the effectiveness of all your other skincare products so they will work better.

This focus on traditional Korean medicinal wisdom extends to other products in the Sulwhasoo family. Inspired by the writings of a 17th century royal physician, many Sulwhasoo products contain herbs and botanicals that have long been used in traditional Korean medicine. Take the Korean ginseng, a plant renowned for its anti-aging powers, for example. The brand doesn’t just use the commercially more desirable root – it uses every part of the ginseng plant, from the root to the berry.

“We are the only brand to do that,” said Ms Jeon Ji-soo, Vice President of Sulwhasoo Marketing Division in my interview with her.

She went on to add, “In Korea, our definition of beauty is a clear, luminous complexion. This, we feel, is only possible if you achieve harmony between your mind, body and skin. Skincare isn’t just about treating the surface, it’s also about improving one’s overall health. At Sulwhasoo, we have this theory that women’s yin cycle changes every 7 years. With each cycle, she’ll need to tailor her lifestyle, diet, skincare regime and products to meet her body’s changing needs.

While it’s easy to attribute the beauty of Korean celebrities to plastic surgery, we have to admit that surgery can only go so far when it comes to getting a naturally luminous, healthy complexion. Korean women – no matter their age – are known to take such good care of their skins, their skincare regime, at the very least, an 8-step affair.

“We believe that it’s not just us Korean women who want beautiful skin,” said Ms Jeon. “Asian women want it too and Sulwhasoo hopes to bring this attitude that beauty is a combination of harmony, health and positivity, to women all over the world.”

As Sulwhasoo celebrates its second anniversary in Singapore this September, we ask the brand to recommend 5 products that can help us get Korean women’s radiant, smooth, ageless skins.

Material World was invited by Sulwhasoo to attend the launch of Luminature Essential Finisher in Seoul. All opinions are the author’s own.

Pro Makeup Tips For Asian Eyes – Vanessa Tai

Single eyelids? Sleepy eyes? Not sure how to pull off the smokey eye look? Akinobu Nishimura, RMK’s international makeup artist, was recently in Singapore and Vanessa Tai sat him down for a 101 on makeup techniques for Asian eyes.

Your eyes are the most expressive part of your face, so it’s only natural that you’ll spend more time and effort prettifying your peepers. But with so many different products and techniques out there, it can be hard to cut through the clutter. To make things simple, here are easy makeup techniques for the most commonly-used eye makeup.

Akinobu Nishimura, international makeup artist with RMK

1. As our eyelids are naturally oily, it’s recommended to prep your eyelids with an eyeshadow base or some powder before applying eyeshadow. This helps your eye makeup to adhere better to your skin.

2. Use eyeshadow in one colour, but in a gradation of shades. Start by applying the darkest shade on the bottom of your eyelid and slowly work your way up the eye socket to the lightest shade. This helps create a more 3D appearance.

3. When applying the next shade, don’t start at the line where the previous colour ends. Rather, the colours should be blended so that it looks more natural. Using a brush can help you create a more natural look, without any hard lines.

1. Before applying your mascara, it’s important to curl your eyelashes properly so that it curls upwards and creates the appearance of wider-looking eyes. For the doe-eye look, you can also curl your lower lashes.

2. When applying mascara, avoid layering on too many coats as it’ll end up clumping and weigh your lashes down, which may make your eyes appear smaller.

3. Wondering if you should get falsies? It’s always better to work with what you have, but if your natural lashes are sparse to begin with, you can consider getting natural-looking eyelash extensions. Anything too thick or dramatic may also make your eyes appear smaller.

1. To create the perfect wing tip, start by drawing an outline according to the shape of your eyes. (For a clearer idea, refer to the sketch below.) From there, you can fill in the gaps, depending on how dramatic an effect you’re trying to create. Think of the wingtip as an extension of your lower lash line. If the tip is too high or long, simply use a cotton bud to adjust until you achieve your desired effect. Over time, you’ll discover the perfect angle and length for your eye shape.

To create the perfect wing tip, start by drawing your desired shape.

Akinobu-san demonstrates how to draw an outline according to your eye shape.

2. Some people believe lining your lower lash line can make your eyes appear smaller. However, it really depends on your eye shape. Experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you. If you want to continue lining your lower lash line, one way is to simply line it halfway (from the wing tip to the middle of your lower lash line) and use a lighter shade to fill in the other half.

3. If you’re bored with your usual black or brown eyeliner, some great options for everyday wear include shades such as navy blue or grey.

[Infographic] Wanna Look Like Helen Mirren When You Are 50? – Deborah Tan

When people talk about aging gracefully, what exactly do they mean? Is it about leading a healthy, independent life? Is it about looking good for your age? Material World polled 138 women to find out what their attitudes towards aging are like. Together with Clarins, we present the infographic below.

A month ago, we asked women aged 30 – 45 to answer a survey on Aging Gracefully. What we didn’t reveal in this survey was that this project was a collaboration between Clarins and Material World. In this survey, we asked respondents questions like, “Age is just a number – agree or disagree?” (most of them agreed), “Would you get Botox to preserve your youthful looks?” (most said no), and “Have you ever lied about your age?” (a majority said no). Attitudes towards aging are generally healthy amongst our respondents.

We also asked: Who is your role model when it comes to aging gracefully? An overwhelming majority selected Helen Mirren. Many of our respondents recognized that when it comes to aging, staying healthy and independent is extremely important. They also reject the idea of surgically preserving their looks opting instead for the non-invasive solution of using skincare.

ClarinsFinalReview of Clarins Extra-Firming Eye Cream

Photos taken in daylight and have not be touched up or digitally altered.

I tried this eye cream for a month. Initially, I had my doubts whether its efficacy would show up on me. This is not a “humble-brag” but I really don’t have any crow’s feet, eye bags or dark circles on my eye area. So when the ladies from Clarins asked if the eye cream was working on me, I told them I couldn’t really see any difference. But for the sake of “research”, I persevered and continued to use it. The Before pictures were taken slightly more than a month ago, while the After, this morning. While I’m unable to tell you how effective this cream will be on crow’s feet, I can see that it has lifted the skin at my upper eyelids – my double-eyelid lines are much more obvious.

Texture-wise, the cream is not heavy and is absorbed very quickly by the skin.

I would say, if you are looking for an eye cream to address concerns such as crow’s feet, eye bags, saggy eyelids and dark circles, give Extra-Firming Eye Cream a try. To claim a sample, you can click here.

Clarins Extra-Firming Eye Cream is now retailing at all Clarins counters islandwide. Material World worked with Clarins to create the infographic. This post, however, was neither paid for nor advised by Clarins. The product was given to Material World to review, all opinions are the author’s own.

[Press Trip] Meet The Game Changer In Skincare From Sulwhasoo – Deborah Tan

This month, change up your skincare regime with this all-new beauty concept from Sulwhasoo, South Korea’s No. 1 luxury cosmetic brand. Deborah Tan explains the Luminature Essential Finisher below.

Exactly how many steps does your skincare regime need? Let us count the ways …

1. Makeup remover (Night)
2. Cleanser
3. Lotion
4. Essence
5. Serum
6. Treatment
7. Moisturizer
8. Eye cream
9. Sunscreen (Day)

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, $112.

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, $112.

That’s 8 steps depending on whether you’re doing this in the day (which you end by applying sunscreen) or at night (which you begin by removing your makeup). Some women use more than 1 serum, some use a pre-serum, and some use a serum on their eyes before they put on eye cream. The amount of money, time and care we invest in our skin is just …. wow.

So if you are ready to shower ever more care on your skin, read on. Because I’m going to talk about this all-new product from the land of beauty trends and crazes – South Korea.

The “Mi-an” Tradition
Although Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher represents a new product category in skincare, its inspiration comes from a beauty tradition steeped in history. Introduced more than 1,500 years ago, the “Mi-an” (“beautifying finish” in Korean) was a last step of the skincare regime followed by Korean women in ancient times. It was formulated during the Age of Three Empires and recorded in the Kyuhap-Chongseo (Encyclopedia of Women’s Life) during the Joseon Dynasty.

How Does Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher Work?
Similar to the “Mi-an”, the Luminature Essential Finisher is designed to be used as the final step in your skincare routine. It works by forming a natural protective barrier over the skin, locking in the efficacy of the skincare products from Steps 3 to 8 (see above).

How To Use
After you have put on your skincare products, dispense a pump full of the Luminature Essential Finisher into your palm. Gently warm the product by massaging it between your hands and then press them over your face.

Every bottle of Luminature Essential Finisher is packed with the concentrates of 5 roots of Red Ginseng and 110 cups of Green Tea. Red Ginseng encourages the regeneration of the skin while Green Tea purifies and boosts the effect of other ingredients.

Do not expect an immediate miracle with Luminature Essential Finisher. As a product designed to lock in and enhance your existing skincare products, it goes without saying that the preceding products have to work well for you in the first place. Think of it as a vitamin supplement. If your existing diet sucks, popping a vitamin pill isn’t going to make you the healthiest person on Earth. So if you think you can get away with using crappy products or with not even using any products, you are setting yourself on the path of skincare disaster.

Obviously for “best possible results”, you are encouraged to use this with other Sulwhasoo products. However, to see if this really enhances my existing skincare products, I stuck to the ones I habitually use whenever I’m not testing other products.

The improvements weren’t obvious until …. I did a half-and-half with both sides of my faces. In the After pictures, I can see an improvement in texture, tone, smoothness and firmness. I particularly like how much smoother the skin at my forehead has become. There is LESS GREYNESS in the After images – the Luminature Esssential Finisher really shines on the radiance front.

Overall, I have found that my skin is a lot firmer and rosier after adding Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher to my skincare routine. The Koreans believe that at the age of 35, women will begin to see a lot more drastic changes in their skin due to a change in hormonal levels. The Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher also has the second function of enhancing aging skin’s ability to react to skincare products. So if you feel that your skin has “stop reacting” to your skincare products, it could be that all it needs is a product to kickstart its energy level once again.

Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher retails at $112 at Sulwhasoo counters islandwide. Material World was invited to a press trip in Seoul, South Korea, for the media launch of Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher, and given a product to review. All opinions are the author’s own. This post was neither paid for nor advised by Sulwhasoo.

8 Beauty Hacks For The Busy Woman – Matthew Fam

A beauty S.O.S can strike at any moment, but rushing down to department stores to replenish your makeup stock may not be an option for a busy woman! These 8 tips can save you valuable time so you can look your best while staying at the top of your game.

1. Revive dried mascara.
The recommended shelf life of mascaras are pitched at just three months(!), but constantly heading down to department stores to replace old tubes can be such a chore! Here’s what you can do when your old mascaras have gone clumpy and dry: Place closed tube in mug of hot water and leave for one minute. The heat melts the mascara fluid to its original consistency.

broken_powder_grande2. Fix broken cake powders.
Be it blushes or foundations, breaking cake powders can be a real drag- especially if they’ve been newly bought. Want to avoid the mess of a cracked cake? Try fixing the broken blocks by grinding them into fine powder. Then, spray some rubbing alcohol on crushed mixture. Fuse it into a moist (not wet) paste and let it dry.

3. Prolong the life of your favourite nail polish.
Owning a large range of nail polishes has its drawbacks. For one, it may take months before you re-use the same bottle! By then, air exposure would cause the varnish to become thick and clumpy. This creates an uneven coating dotted with tiny air bubbles (read: BAD nail jobs). Instead of tossing these bottles that have hardly been used, try using nail polish thinners. Add a few drops into your old polish to restore its original viscosity.

4. Clean makeup brushes in double time.
Product residue on your brushes serve as a host for bacteria to grow, so it’s important that you clean them regularly. Need an easy, quick way to do this? Skip detergent- washing brushes with them will dry up their delicate bristles. Use baby wipes or wet towelettes instead. It cleans and moisturises brush fibres at the same time. Simply brush against the towelette and leave to dry.

The multi-functional usage of petroleum jelly.

The multi-functional usage of petroleum jelly.

5. Lengthen staying power of perfumes.
Some scents fade halfway through the day, but lugging around a fragrance bottle in your bag is a real hassle! Lengthen your scent’s staying power with petroleum jelly. Apply a thin swatch of the product on pulse points such as your wrists or small sections of your neck. Then, spray fragrance over as usual. The jelly’s oil traps the scent and stays on skin for longer.

6. Salvage your broken lippie.
You don’t have to junk your tube of lippie if it breaks. Store the broken tube of pigment in a small, air-tight jar. It’s best to use a lip brush to apply from this container. Not only do you save money, you get more precision when you apply it this way. Perfectly coloured puckers FTW!

7. Pump up your foundation’s hydration power.
Longing for that gorgeous glow? Mix one-part face moisturiser, and one-part liquid foundation in an empty pump bottle. The result? A home-made tinted moisturiser that creates an extra dewy complexion. Apparently, Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist uses this trick for the pop star’s signature fresh face look.

Keep calm and look (a teeny bit) like Cara Delevingne.

Keep calm and look (a teeny bit) like Cara Delevingne.

8. Tame unruly brows.
For brows that refuse to stay in place- fear no more. You don’t have to make a last minute trip to the department store to get a brow gel. Simply use a tiny dollop of petroleum jelly to slick your brows in place. Now you’ll be able to have Cara Delevingne brows all ready!

So, what other beauty hacks do you rely on? Share with us in the comments section below!

Need To Glow? Qi Mantra Miracle Facial Will Help You! – Deborah Tan

Putting your best face forward takes just 90 minutes. Deborah Tan susses out Qi Mantra’s latest facial treatment – Miracle Facial.

Get a massage done ... oh, and while you're at it, sign up for the Miracle Facial too!

Get a massage done … oh, and while you’re at it, sign up for the Miracle Facial too!

You would normally associate Qi Mantra with massages. I certainly did. So when I received an email introducing a facial treatment at one of my all-time favorite massage joints, I was curious how it would work. Named Miracle Facial, this 90-minute treatment incorporates the latest in light therapy with a product called Miracle Cell to give your skin immediate firming, retexturizing and brightening results.

Instead of using IPL – intense pulsed light – to awaken your skin cells, VPL – variable pulsed light – is used. A more superior technology than IPL, VPL works by delivering a super fast pulse of light energy into the skin, setting in motion a process known as photo rejuvenation. Photo rejuvenation stimulates collagen production, helping skin become smoother, firmer and finer.

The VPL treatment is accompanied by the application of Miracle Cell, a product containing soy phyto placenta extract, which is bio-similar to human placenta. This is great if you are curious about the whole “placenta craze” but feel icky about using placentas of humans or animals anywhere near your skin.

The facial begins with cleansing your skin of any makeup and surface impurities using SCO Purifying Cleanser. The therapist then goes on to exfoliate your face with SCO Refining Face Scrub. Once your skin is cleared on all pore-clogging grime and dead skin cells, the VPL treatment begins. Like all light therapy, a layer of cold gel is applied to the skin. For a greater peace of mind, I would have preferred it if my therapist had given me tinted eye shades to place over my eyes. When the light was applied close to the nose, the blinding bright flash was, honestly, a bit scary. Maybe this is something Qi Mantra can take note of.

Once the VPL is over, the Miracle Cell therapy follows. The ampoules are applied using an acupressure point massage on the face, a lifting mask is then put over the face. While waiting for these products to work their magic, the therapist will give you a shoulder and a scalp massage – and coming from Qi Mantra, you can be assured that that will be awesome.

This is not a facial where you lie back, relax and get pampered from head to toe. The Miracle Facial is a functional 90-minute treatment that works great for those who are looking to “reawaken” their tired-looking skin just before an important event like a date or a wedding cocktail. What I liked most about it is that it has no down-time and you don’t have to shy away from public because of any post-facial redness. I returned to the office immediately after my treatment and my business partners commented on how I looked more refreshed and well-rested.

For women who go to facials more as a quick-fix than a maintenance, Miracle Facial is money well spent because you get that gratification of seeing immediate results.

Qi Mantra’s Miracle Facial is priced at $350 for 90 minutes. Find your nearest Qi Mantra outlet here.

The Multi-Functional Oil You Have To Try – Matthew Fam

We’ve all heard of oils that beautify your complexion and give you shiny locks of hair, but Matthew Fam has found one that you can actually eat for a nutrition boost while ticking all the beauty boxes for great skin and hair! Here’s why he’s going loco for the coco(nut oil).

o-BENEFITS-OF-COCONUT-OIL-facebookIt’s a nutrition must-have!

Uhm… Logically speaking, isn’t eating oil unhealthy? Well, not this one. Coconut oil is a rich source of saturated fat that aids in weight loss. What’s different is its chemical structure of medium-chain triglycerides that allows the body to digest it more rapidly, thus using up more energy.

In fact, 15 to 30 grams of such fat can increase 24-hour energy expenditure by 5% (that’s about an extra 120 calories burnt a day!) Its high lauric acid content also bolsters your immune system by fending off viruses such as the common flu, for instance.

You can cook it with rice, use it as dressing for salads, or just ingest it as it is. What I usually do is to add a tablespoon of the oil into my breakfast of soy milk, seeds and oats- and it totally ends up tasting like CHENDOL. Mind. Blown.

Plus, it’s easy to find a jar of this multi-functional oil from your local supermarket. You can even purchase a jar and have it home-delivered from health food websites like these.

2269941It gives you beautiful skin and hair!

Coconut oil works as a great moisturiser too. The luxuriously nourishing oil turns into a paste-like consistency below temperatures of 24 degrees celsius, so I leave a jar of it in the fridge. This way, it’s less messy for me to scoop the solidified, fluffy substance to spread on skin.

I have dry skin on my legs, so this beauty fix was perfect for an overnight moisturising treatment. The oil is absorbed well by skin, and you don’t have to worry about staining your bedsheets. I was surprised at how applying a dollop of coconut oil left a mild, fragrant scent that wasn’t overpowering at all. In addition, my legs definitely felt smoother the next morning!

If the thought of smearing food on your skin or scalp grosses you out, there are plenty of coconut oil-infused products out there for you to reap its benefits, without the potential ‘ick’ factor. Try Organix Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Shampoo. It’s non-SLS formula (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, a drying detergent ingredient in most shampoos) gives you shiny, silky strands.

cdentistryIt’s a major oral hygiene booster!

You’d be surprised to find out that the benefits of coconut oil even extend to oral health! The next time you get your hands on a jar of this miracle oil, try out oil swishing- an ancient Indian practice that dates back thousands of years.

What you need to do is gargle a table-spoonful of oil in your mouth, as you would with regular mouthwash, for 10 to 20 minutes. It is said to reduce bacteria and plague from your mouth, and gradually whiten teeth. When you expel the solution, the naturally transparent oil should now have a milky colour.

Sure, it shouldn’t replace regular brushing and flossing; but who doesn’t want a gorgeous smile, right?

With these all-encompassing benefits that ensure a healthier, more beautiful you, I am officially hooked on coconut oil!

10 Reasons Why It’s Great To Be A Diva – Matthew Fam

I never got the hate with divas. I mean, has a healthy level of confidence ever been bad? (err… no.) Sure, diva behaviour is frowned upon if you throw a hissy fit every five seconds. But there’s so much greatness in being this wonder woman archetype that even you have to give it a try. Here are 10 reasons why:

tumblr_inline_mvr3smiHni1s59yix 1. You know you’re good
B*tch please, you are confident in your capabilities and talents without resorting to arrogance. And because of this self-confidence, you are decided on your goals. Promotion in 2 years time? Set. Rule the world? Oh yeah, sure, like it’s no big deal. You know exactly what you want, so you go get ’em, baby.

2. You look fabulous
Haters gonna hate, but you know you’re looking drop dead gorgeous. You keep appearances well, and never let your fab-o-meter go south. Even when you leave home without makeup, you work it like it’s the next big trend, #BareFacedBeauty.

3. You are unfazed by setbacks
Failure doesn’t exist in your dictionary, mm-kay? You don’t have time to entertain it, and your ego is certainly above it. A diva is an optimist: you merely see failure as a work in progress, and a constant refinement until you achieve perfection.

tumblr_myilyvB3Sl1sixq5yo1_5004. You don’t hide in the shadow of your man
It is one thing to put aside your own ego to compromise and form a loving relationship with another man. It is another to be completely eclipsed by him. In the diva’s code of conduct, you are not defined by your man- his job, how much he earns or his social status. Instead, you have equal placing on the mantle.

tumblr_inline_mv1x89p9yv1s59yix 5.You crush your enemies like a cockroach
Losing face doesn’t sit well with you. And neither does anyone who thinks that badmouthing is ever a good idea. Sure, confrontation is never desired; but when push comes to shove, a diva doesn’t even need to sharpen her claws. Her caustic wit will be quick to redress anyone who dares sass her out.

Outside of tiffs, this quick wit serves especially well when forming positive impressions and thinking on her feet (Career & Relationships: 1, Enemy: 0).

6. You will be envied

Fact: you can’t please everyone. Some people will absolutely hate your guts, and that’s okay. But know that deep inside, everyone just admires you for your confidence and, you know, just being so darn amazing. You may even inspire those around you to emulate your fabulosity. So trust in your identity, and be proud to be a diva.

7. You are fearless
Despite the brazen attitude divas are known to have, there will still be times when fear sets in, for example, during a major career decision. However, what makes a true diva is her ability to maintain inner poise and think clearly. Seasoned divas have this down to a tee by breezing through sticky situations, but don’t discount the younger ones- they bite down hard on insecurities and rise to the occasion.

Maybe a teeensy bit more subtlety…

8. You get straight to the point
Divas are efficient and will tell it like it is. Forget passive aggression (who has time for that??) you just zero in for the kill. Being straight forward spares everyone the time and trouble trying to figure out what the other party wants. However, do note that being straightforward doesn’t give you the license to be rude. The difference lies in how you craft your message in a respectful manner.

9. You know when to say ‘no’
“I’m not your b*tch, don’t hang your sh*t on me,” once sang Madonna in her 1995 hit, Human Nature. Make this your mantra. Internalise. Apply. You will not be treated like a doormat. Your shining sense of self worth doesn’t allow you to squander precious seconds doing something that is not worth your time. *Three snaps in a ‘Z’ formation*

10. You will be remembered
When played correctly (read: totes not acceptable to be a full-out monster 24/7), the diva card is your biggest bet to being remembered for the right reasons. In a sea of cookie-cutter personalities, standing out is not a problem for you. Plus, with the magic combination of poise, class and grace, you will be respected by those around.

5 Reasons This Is 2014’s Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin – Deborah Tan

In the beauty race to be this year’s best products, Deborah Tan has found her winner for “Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin” in Kiehl’s new and improved Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream.

We are not halfway into June and, here I am, casting my vote for “2014’s Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin”. To be honest, when Kiehl’s launched the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream a couple of years ago, I was ambivalent, to say the least. While it wasn’t as rich as the classic Ultra Facial Cream, it didn’t exactly have the best texture where oil-free, super hydrating moisturisers were concerned.

And my vote for Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin goes to ...

And my vote for Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin goes to …

But this year, the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream has been given a face-lift (hurhur …). The texture is lighter, more watery, and most importantly, it is absorbed very easily by the skin. Still doesn’t explain why this is THE BEST moisturiser for oily skin? Be patient. Read on.

1. Say “Goodbye” To Schizo Skin
My skin acts up whenever I have to fly. How is it possible for skin to be flaky and oily at the same time?!? I tried the new Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream on a recent flight to Japan and was pleased to find it helped kept my skin smooth, soft and shine-free throughout.

2. Preps Skin Nicely For Makeup
The key to a natural-looking base makeup? Moisturiser. And you need just the right type and amount. Too rich and your makeup won’t stay on for long, too dry and you end up with a cakey finish. This moisturiser preps the skin so it’s supple enough for your foundation.

3. Keeps Skin Matte For A Very Long Time
The principle behind why we need to hydrate our skin is because thirsty skin produces more oil as a way of compensating for the dryness. Most hydrating moisturisers I’ve tried have never successfully kept my skin shine-free for more than a couple of hours. With Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, I found my face stayed matte and fresh through an entire day of going in and out of air-conditioned offices and into the open.

Photos have not been digitally touched up or altered in any way.

4. A Relief On Super Hot Days
Do you find your skin crying out for cool relief on afternoons when the mercury hits 35 and above? I certainly do. I keep a jar of this moisturiser on my office desk so I can freshen up after coming in from the sun. The moisturiser sinks into the skin so easily, all you need to do is pat any perspiration off and dab this soothing balm onto your skin. Ahhhh …. sweet relief!

5. Feels Great On Necks
My neck area is prone to oiliness, especially in the more humid months. However, I’m well past the age bracket where I can afford to neglect the area. This moisturiser is powerful enough for the neck area if you want something that hydrates without leaving a sticky film behind.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, $48 for 50ml, at all Kiehl’s stores islandwide

I started using Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free on May 7. It’s been a month and I have noticed these improvements to my skin:
1. It stays calm even if I go from cool, dry air-conditioning into the hot and humid outdoors
2. It flushes less easily
3. It doesn’t get shiny or oily in the afternoon
4. Makeup goes on more easily and stays on longer

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream keeps my skin hydrated no matter where I am. Mid-day oil slicks have become a thing of the past and I love how my complexion is so much calmer now. I strongly recommend this moisturiser for anyone who wants to keep their skins well-hydrated whatever the climate or temperature.

10 X-Men Inspired Beauty Looks For Non-Mutants – Matthew Fam

Are superhuman abilities out of reach for us non-mutants? Not a chance! The ladies of X-Men may have fire-wielding and shapeshifting tricks aplenty, but you can have super beauty with these 10 X-Men inspired beauty looks.

Relax- it's not her blue body paint we're talking about.

Relax- it’s not her blue body paint we’re talking about.

1. Mystique
This shapeshifting babe has got the smoking beauty trend you HAVE to follow (hint: it’s not her blue skin). Slicked back hair is neat and amazingly chic, especially when contrasted with a bold lip.

Hold the style in place using hair mousse. For bobbed hair lengths, dispense mousse the size of a lemon; for long hair, a baseball-sized mound would suffice. Apply on damp hair that is 60% dry, then style behind ears and blowdry.

2. Kitty Pryde
You may not phase through walls, but Kitty’s ‘no-makeup’ makeup can take you from work to weekend brunch without a beauty hitch.

Instead of creating an artificial mask of foundation, use a stippling brush (it distributes product evenly without streaks) to apply makeup only on problem areas. Dab on lip and cheek stain for a subtle pinch of colour. Now, with a face that pretty, you’ll be able to snag your very own Iceman.

Short crops = world domination.

Short crops = world domination.

3. Storm
Storm may have the power to manipulate the weather, but you can heat things up too- with a sexy short crop, that is! Having shorter crops doesn’t mean that you can’t look feminine. A smooth, pixie cut a la Anne Hathaway can be demure-looking as well.

When creating texture, the key is to use hair wax sparingly. Rub a ten-cent coin sized dollop between palms and rake fingers through hair. Add extra for a windswept ‘do. But remember not to go overboard- the weight of excess product will flatten your mane.

Bold brows FTW! (Not quite sure about face tats, though…)

4. Callisto
Joining forces with Magneto’s brotherhood of mutants in X-Men: The Last Stand, Callisto expresses her superhuman strength through her bold brows and face tats. Okay, so face tattoos aren’t exactly office friendly, but these strong-woman brows are a must!

Using a brow pencil, swipe upwards in diagonal, feather-like strokes. It’s all about looking fierce and fabulous, daaahling.

5. Emma Frost
She may have diamond-tough skin but Emma’s look is hardcore beauty. A pale colour palette is essential for achieving this pristine, icy look. Keep eyeshadows simple, and stick to neutral lip shades.

For fairer complexions, opt for pink-based nudes; darker complexions should try caramel tones instead. Blend highlighter along the top of cheekbones and dot the inside corner of eyes.

tumblr_mcz8m37J9b1r8g7kno1_500 26.Lady Deathstrike
Do adamantium claws and leather cat suits a femme fatale make? Not on our watch. Deathstrike’s sensous eye and a dark lip gives her an edge above the rest. To channel this foxy fighter, a luscious coating of mascara is what you need. Coat the tips of your lashes with brown mascara to create the illusion of larger eyes.

Mocha magic.

Mocha magic.

7. Angel Salvadore
Want Angel’s mocha-toned skin, but afraid of the skin-damaging effects of the Sun? A cream self tanner can solve your problems. For an even wash of bronze, exfoliate and moisturise skin before application- dry patches of skin grab onto too much colour and create a blotchy tan. (Watch out for knees and elbows!)

rogue_hulk8. Rogue
She has the power to absorb memories and you don’t. But what you can steal is everyone’s attention with your sexy, silky tresses. *Cue shampoo-commercial dramatic hair flip*

Rogue’s silky standards are no superhuman feat: the trick lies in misting hair with a heat-activated straightening spray so hair is frizz-free. Follow this with the use of a hair iron. Then slick a pump of hair oil from mid-shaft to tips for glossy, lustrous strands.

9. Blink
A recent addition to the X-Men film franchise, Blink gives us major punk with her stark orchid highlights, and crazy plum pout. For a temporary streak of colour, use hair chalks.

Thinking of upping the ante? Try a graphic, bold eye like Blink’s.

It's not just the wind machine that's making her look so fabulous.

It’s not just the wind machine that’s making her look so fabulous.

10. Phoenix (Jean Grey)
When she’s not going batsh*t crazy annihilating everything in her path, Phoenix rocks those auburn tresses even without a wind machine.

If you’re thinking of penciling in a salon dye job, avoid conditioning hair before your visit. Red dye pigments have a large molecule size. This means that any prior conditioning would seal the cuticle and block pigment from penetrating the hair shaft, producing a less-saturated colour.

A botched dye job is a huge no-no. After all, who else is going to save the world if you don’t look fabulous??

6 Reasons Why This Sun-Protecting Accessory Is INSANE – Matthew Fam

The onslaught of Sun damage is never-ending, so we stock our beauty arsenals with sunscreens and brightening serums aplenty. Plus, there’s always sunglasses and hats to rely on- but even those get boring! Introducing the face visor: a crazy, but effective accessory that shields UV rays, while adding pomp to your fashion cred.

I want one NOW!

1. V. Stiviano: The Woman Who Started It All
So here’s the lo-down: she’s the girlfriend of Donald Sterling, 80(!), owner of the NBA Los Angeles Clippers. Stiviano was recently caught in a whirlwind of bad press, having leaked phone recordings of Sterling’s spiels of racism that landed the big boss in hot soup.

What started out as paparazzi-repelling accessory has now been swiped up by fashion blogs and news sites in America as the next ‘it’ accessory. The difference between this and other insane Sun-protecting kits out there? This one actually looks good!

2. What is it?
It’s pretty much a standard visor pumped with 100cc of fashion steroids. Forget those tiny visors worn by tennis or golf players- this baby goes for the gold. Its chrome-like visor fans out across your entire face so you get extra UV coverage. Perfect for days when you feel especially sh*tty and want to be left alone… or pretending to be asleep on the reserved seats of an MRT train.

Would you rather wear a face visor, or be sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

Would you rather wear a face visor, or be sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

3. It’s Sold Out On E-bay
Get this- when the twitter universe started picking up on girlfriend’s use of this futuristic-looking shield, orders went through the roof! Getting yourself one here can take up to 2 weeks for processing alone (not including shipping) due to overwhelming demand.

And apparently, this sleek accessory has been sold in China- creators of other equally insane knick knacks- at dirt cheap prices. (How did we not notice this??) So before retailers jack up the price, be sure to order yourself one, pronto!

Go, go, power rangers!

Go, go, power rangers!

4. It’s In With The New
Think these visors are obiang? No way. In fact, they’re bang on trend with anything space-age and retro-influenced.

Do these cantilevered beauties remind anyone of Daft Punk? The ‘Get Lucky’ electronica hitmakers donned their trademark helmets on the 56th Annual Grammy Awards red carpet. We reckon the glare from the cameras were too much for the French duo to handle.

Lighter than a helmet, face visors can masquerade you as a fashion-forward power ranger without suffocation. (Childhood confession: I always wanted to be Trini the yellow ranger!!)

Visors were HOT in Alexander McQueen's 2012 Fall/Winter Collection

Visors were HOT in Alexander McQueen’s 2012 Fall/Winter Collection

5. It’s Got Major Fashion Cred

Contrary to its futuristic appearance, the face visor is actually a re-invention of trends past. Remember those tacky 80’s visors made from cheap plastic?

We’re getting major throwback from Alexander McQueen’s 2012 Fall/Winter collection, where visor-donned models were sent down the runway.  With a nod to the house of McQueen and total fashion cred in the bag, rest assured you won’t be a laughing stock as you don this gorgeous UV-protecting headpiece.

Too covered up for the beach? We think so!

6. It’s Better Than Burkinis

Now, I get that some of us are afraid of riding on a new trend because it’s always a risk being first on board.

However, you should know that crazy, Sun-protecting accessories have been worshipped by celebrities since for-evahh. (So it’s tried and tested!) Karl Lagerfeld, for instance, is never seen without his gloves, while Nicole Kidman was once snapped jogging in a neck and head wrap.

Although… we can’t say for sure that all Sun-shielding methods have panned out well. *cough* Nigella Lawson *cough*. With face visors at least, you know you can take the celebrity-backed trend of such accessories and fearlessly amp up the fashion stakes.

… But It Still Doesn’t Replace Your Sunscreen Essentials

While the face visor undoubtedly offers extra protection against skin-roughening UV rays, it cannot replace a basic skincare regimen. A religious application of sunscreen and brightening serums is the key to an evenly-toned complexion, with minimal pigmentation spots caused by Sun damage.

If you are outdoors, remember to re-apply sunscreen after each 2-3 hours of exposure. A spray-on sunscreen mists a protective barrier without smudging your makeup.

So, is this an accessory that you would wear? Share with us in the comments section below!
