[Material World x For Beloved One] Get Drunk On THIS Red Wine – Tan Lili

The new Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly from For Beloved One may not give you a buzz, but it will give you supple, glowing skin the morning after, says Tan Lili.

red wine antioxidant night jelly woman

You’ve probably read about the numerous benefits of drinking red wine (in moderation), thanks to the presence of powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols. In particular, resveratrol has been proven to reduce the risk of heart-related diseases. And when you hear the word “antioxidants”, you know red wine can be somewhat beneficial to the skin.

That’s exactly what Taiwanese beauty brand For Beloved One’s latest skincare product is about. Formulated with red wine polyphenols from France, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is chock-full of antioxidative goodness whose benefits include restoring skin suppleness and elasticity.

IMG_7880Besides the red wine polyphenols, each 50ml jar is packed with several other patented formulas, such as Prodizia Anti-Glycation Patent (cranks up skin metabolism and fights fatigue); Phytessence Kudzu (slows down the breakdown of collagen and elastin); Chronodyn Cell Energizer (defends the skin against environmental irritants in the day, as well as strengthens the skin’s natural ability to repair itself at night); Lactobacillus Ferment (brightens and evens out skin tone); and Vitis vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract (protects the skin from free radical damage). Working together with the red wine polyphenols, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is said to help improve your overall skin conditions.

The CSI That Speeds Up Skin Ageing Process

The science behind this overnight mask is an interesting one. According to For Beloved One’s R&D team, common skin concerns like blemishes, enlarged pores and fine lines are actually the result of the often-neglected Chronic Silent Inflammation (CSI), which is the combined action of oxidation (external) and glycation (internal) of the skin.

While oxidation is a natural process in which the body produces antioxidants to counter a small percentage of free radicals emitted from normal cellular functions, external toxins such as air pollution can sometimes trigger an overproduction of free radicals, which may lead to a whole host of problems, including premature skin ageing. Glycation is also a natural process in which glucose attaches to proteins, causing the skin to be more susceptible to damage and premature ageing.

This is where the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly steps in. By combining the abovementioned patented formulas, the mask targets the root cause of CSI to slow down the ageing process of the skin while restoring radiance and brightening it.

FullSizeRenderFirst Impressions

As far as first impressions go, the Night Jelly was … fascinating. Barring the taste (for obvious reasons), it looks, feels and even smells like strawberry jam. No, really; go to the For Beloved One section at Sephora and try it out for yourself if you don’t believe me. This is my first time using a For Beloved One product, but I’m guessing the brand is big on never judging a book by its cover.

But since its appearance, texture and scent are comparable to those of my favourite breakfast spread, I didn’t hesitate slathering the product on my face. Yes, apparently I have no fear of allergic reactions. (Don’t try this at home, kids. If you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, always do a patch when trying out a new product.) Because of its jelly-like texture, the product doesn’t immediately sink into the skin, leaving behind a slight stickiness.

So, The Verdict?

There’s a claim on the packaging that says the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is able to “relieve all skin problems overnight”. A pretty bold claim – and one that I have to shoot down, understandably, because my fine lines and enlarged pores didn’t miraculously disappear after seven hours of sleep. Having said that, my skin did look visibly brighter and feel softer and smoother in the morning. Since I started using it a couple of weeks ago, I also noticed my complexion isn’t as tired-looking as before.

With the impressive myriad of skin-lovin’ patented formulas crammed into one jar, I reckon the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly brings a whole new meaning to the term “nightcap”. Cheers to younger-looking skin!

The Easy Cider Pie Every One Can Make – Deborah Tan

Deborah Tan shares an easy recipe for a cider pie you can create in just over an hour. What’s more? We are giving away Somersby Cider so you too can enjoy the refreshing fruity drink on a simmering hot day like this.

For this recipe, I used Somersby Pear Cider.

For this recipe, I used Somersby Pear Cider.

I love ciders because they are so easy to drink! Sweet, fruity, bubbly and with an alcoholic twist, ciders are the perfect beverages for our sunny weather. I have wondered, often, how I can incorporate it into a bake. When Somersby approached us to do a giveaway, I jumped on the opportunity to create something with its cider.

This recipe takes a little over an hour to put together. It doesn’t require any sophisticated baking skill so it’s perfect if you have a BBQ potluck party coming up and you want to bring a dessert that will end the evening on a fruity, celebratory note!

You’ll Need
1. An 8-inch springform pan
2. A mandolin
3. A mixing bowl
4. A hand whisk or a stand mixer
5. Non-stick baking paper

For the crust
16 pieces of digestive biscuits
50g of butter, melted

For the filling
1 pear or apple (depending on which cider you are using)
Juice from 1 lemon
1 bottle of Somersby pear or apple cider
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs

For the topping
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cinnamon powder

To form the pie crust
1. Crush the biscuits and pour melted butter over the crumbs. Mix the butter and crumbs together so they start resembling a bit like wet sand.
2. Line the base of the springform pan with baking paper. Grease the sides of the pan with butter.
3. Make a crust with the biscuit crumbs, pressing the crumbs to the sides of the pan.
4. Chill the crust in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.

Set the oven at 165 degrees Celsius.

Top with whipped cream and sprinkle some cinnamon over before serving.

Preparing the filling
1. In a medium saucepan, boil and reduce 2 cups of cider into 1/2 cup. This will take about 10 minutes.
2. While waiting for the cider to boil off, squeeze the juice of one lemon into a bowl.
3. Using a mandolin, slice the pear or apple into 2mm thin slices.
4. Put the slices into the lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.
5. In the mixing bowl, whisk together the reduced cider, sour cream, sugar and salt.
6. Add in the eggs and whisk some more.
7. Pour 2/3 of the custard into the pie base.
8. Arrange approximately 2/3 of the sliced pear/apple evenly in the pie. Set aside 8 – 10 of the most beautiful pieces for the top.
9. Pour the remaining custard into the pie and arrange the remaining fruit slices in a nice flower pattern on top.
10. Bake in oven for 35 – 40 minutes until the custard is set around the edge of the pie but the centre is slightly jiggly.

Leave the pie to cool in the oven for 10 minutes. Then remove it and leave it to cool further on a wire rack. When you’re ready to serve the pie, make the topping:

Make the topping
11. Whisk the heavy cream, sugar and cinnamon together until the mixture is firmly whipped.
12. Layer the whipped cream on top of the cooled pie OR serve on the side with a slice of the pie.

[Material World x Maybelline] The #OOTD Challenge – Denise Li

Denise Li was issued a challenge by the folks at Maybelline to create 5 OOTDs using the new and improved Maybelline Hyper Sharp eyeliners. This is the result.

If you were to ask women in Singapore about the one beauty product they can’t live without, I’ll bet my last dollar that most of them will say it’s a liquid eyeliner. Gel liners can be a bit unwieldy – it’s hard to draw a thin line and they dry up too quickly; pencils are great for smoky eyes but they aren’t the best if you’re running around for meetings cos they smudge way too quickly.

When it comes to liquid eyeliners, the one to beat definitely has to be Maybelline Hyper Sharp. They’ve just launched a new and improved version with an even finer tip – 0.01mm! What this means: Greater precision, so you’ll be able to create more diverse looks, from the classic wingtip to something a little more dramatic.

With the launch of the new Hyper Sharp, the folks at Maybelline issued Material World a challenge – to come up with 5 #OOTDs (outfit of the day), and create a variety of looks using the three eyeliners in Brown, Soft Black, and Intense Black. Despite the fact that I’ve always thought of my wardrobe options as limited – I am a dress and sneakers girl – I took it on. Challenge, ACCEPTED!

The Everyday Look

This is what I usually wear on harried mornings when I’m rushing to get out of the house and don’t want to think too deeply about throwing together an outfit. Foolproof skater-cut dress, no accessories. I brightened up my eyes with a subtle wash of yellow, and finished it off with Hyper Sharp in Brown. Though the default colour of eyeliner for many of us is black (as was mine), I permanently made the switch to brown a few months ago following the advice of makeup artist Larry Yeo who noted that black can actually look too stark against Asian skin, particularly if we’re not going for a dramatic eye makeup look.

The Look That Says “Trust Me, I Write Creative Copy!”

Just before meeting a client last week, I experimented with a more punchy look. The razor-thin tip of Hyper Sharp is perfect for graphic eye makeup, so I went all out with this one. I was afraid that it would go south, considering my less-than-steady hand but I’m pretty happy with the result. It’s definitely not something you can achieve with a lot of other liquid eyeliners. I finished it off with a swipe of shiny pink lippie.

The “WOOHOO, TGIF!” Look

I’m usually pretty spent by the time Fridays roll around so to perk myself up, I’d put on my favourite canary yellow dress and Melissa heels. On my eyes, I used a shimmery light blue eyeshadow and gave my peepers definition using Hyper Sharp in Intense Black. On my lips is a berry lipstick-gloss. All set for the wine bar and, if my friends are up to it, grooving the night away at a club.

The “Saturday Brunch” Look

I don’t usually do “themes”, but I was feeling particularly inspired on this day. The particular theme in question? Flora and fauna. I paired my super-girly Topshop dress with equally girly makeup. On my eyes, I used a yellow cream eyeshadow as a base, and layered on a green cream eyeshadow (flora and fauna, forest … get it?!), before lining eyes with Hyper Sharp in Brown.

The “Casual Friday” Look

Honestly, the term “Casual Friday” doesn’t mean that much for folks in the creative industry …. every day is Casual Friday for us. Despite that, I’m not usually in the habit of wearing T-shirts to work. But I was DETERMINED to wear my new favourite Beastie Boys tee at all costs. So as not to look too sloppy, I threw on this grey cardigan and finished off the ensemble with a leather bag. This deviates quite a bit from my usual look but I’m really really loving the androgynous feel of it. It’s actually quite an accurate reflection of my personality. To balance out the boyishness of the outfit, I dressed up my face a little more. On my eyes, I used all three Hypersharp liners. I lined my top eye line with Intense Black, and layered Brown on top of it, up to the fold of where my double eyelid begins. On my bottom lashline, I used Soft Black to balance out the heaviness of the look. A little coral on cheeks and on the lips adds a soft, feminine glow.

My thoughts on Maybelline Hypersharp:

They weren’t kidding when they said it was really easy to use – drawing the perfect wingtip was a cinch. If you’re a makeup newbie, this is definitely the eyeliner to get. Because the tip is so thin, you can get very close to the lashline – it’s very nifty for filing in sparse lashes. I also thought that the Soft Black was the perfect shade for the lower lashline – it will further define eyes, while ensuring you don’t stray into “Auntie” territory. They are also relatively waterproof and smudge-proof. The colour didn’t migrate even when I was out and about for meetings in high humidity.

I must thank the folks at Maybelline for issuing the #OOTD challenge too – turns out my fashion repertoire is more diverse than I initially thought!

[Material World x Beauty Empire] The Most “Shiok” Facial and Body Treatments in Singapore – Deborah Tan

She didn’t think it was possible but Deborah Tan may have actually found a facial and an anti-cellulite treatment she actually wants do on a regular basis. Read about her recent trip to Beauty Empire at The Scarlet Hotel below.

Beauty Empire is located at The Scarlet Hotel, just round the corner from Ann Siang Hill.

Beauty Empire is located at The Scarlet Hotel, just round the corner from Ann Siang Hill.

I’ve been struggling to find the right word to describe how I felt after my treatments at Beauty Empire. After a week of pondering, I have decided that no other word is more apt than “shiok“. It’s been a week since my visit to Beauty Empire and every cell in my body is calling out for a repeat visit!

It Sucks, Literally!
The highlight of my facial and body treatments is this machine – the SPM Vacu-Press created by German cosmeceutical company Weyergans – designed to stimulate your lymphatic circulation with a suction mechanism quite like a mini-vacuum cleaner; think cupping but the cup moves along your face and body.

The chief problem the SPM (suction pump massage) addresses is a sluggish lymph drainage. The logic behind it goes like this: (1) A sluggish lymph circulation means your body’s ability to eliminate toxins and wastes is compromised; (2) this could lead to fluid retention and the formation of cellulite; and (3) have a negative effect on your body in terms of weight-loss, energy and overall well-being.

By activating your lymph flow, the SPM does the following things:

A. Boosts the body’s ability to flush out waste matter. This will in turn encourage a healthy skin turnover and the absorption of special treatments.

B. Eliminate fat deposits by increasing cell metabolism and breaking down fat deposits.

C. Tighten up skin for a smoother, firmer appearance at the face, buttocks, thighs and breasts.

D. Strengthening the connective tissue, thickening the dermis layer, thereby improving the appearance of stretch marks too.

How the SPM Vacu-Press works to fight cellulite. (Images taken from the SPM Vacu-Press brochure given to Material World)

The Process: Body
The anti-cellulite treatment that uses the SPM Vacu-Press is known as DCT (Differentiated Cellulite Treatment).

To enhance the efficacy of the SPM, my therapist, Ann, also used a couple of other machines on me. These are optional treatments and you will be advised upon consultation if you need them or not. She warned me that some customers may find the SPM painful.

The SPM is done ALONG the areas where your lymph nodes are located. In areas where “blockages” exist, the massage may seem more painful. Given the severe water retention my legs tend to get, I yelped in pain and surprise when the SPM moved to massage my inner thighs. Ann was suitably amused and said, “Don’t scream so loud … you will frighten away my customers!”

After massaging one leg, Ann told me to sit up to see if I could spot the difference between my thighs. (For decency reasons, I’m not able to show you a picture of my inner thighs.) Although there was redness on the “treated” thigh, it also appeared slimmer, more defined and, when I poked it, firmer. The muscle tone of my “treated” leg definitely looked better as well. When I touched my thigh 10 minutes later, the area was still burning hot (apparently, it’s a sign that fat is being burned).

The Process: Face
The facial, known as High Care Facial, uses products also created by Weyergans.

I was initially worried about applying the SPM to my face. I had this mental image of me screaming bloody murder as the suction pump pulls mercilessly as my face. Thank god the cups used for the face area are much smaller. My post-treatment interview with Ann revealed that if a client with a skin problem – say, acne – comes to Beauty Empire, Ann would recommend she goes on the SPM first before embarking on a skin-clearing regime. “You need to clear your skin of free radicals and toxins first. When your skin is so highly sensitized, nothing is going to work! Weyergans believe you need to treat the skin from inside.”

We too have lymph nodes located near our faces. By moving the suction pumps along the lymph nodes, we are encouraging the flushing out of toxins and, at the same time, tightening and lifting our skin. Ann assured me that even though this is a detoxifying treatment, you will not get an acne breakout post-facial.

Weyergans – Who’s He?
The treatments I tried at Beauty Empire are the brainchild of Rudolph Weyergans – known as The Pope of Cellulite. It was he who first came up with the idea that cellulite is a local disturbance of lymphatic circulation. His idea of a Differentiated Cellulite Treatment (DCT) was patented in the 80s and his book on cellulite has been translated into more than 12 languages. Beauty Empire is the only place in Singapore to offer Weyergans’ Differentiated Cellulite Treatment. Ann herself travels throughout the region to train other therapists on how to use Weyergans’ products and machines.

Although I felt a little bit of pain when the SPM was applied to areas like my inner thighs and inner arms, I found the treatment, overall, bearable and, to a certain extent, relaxing. There was an immediate improvement to the firmness of my skin after one session and I felt an evident lightness in my legs – which tend to feel very heavy and lethargic at the end of each day. To see a significant reduction in cellulite, a course of treatments is recommended and Ann says you’ll have to be prepared to do the DCT at least twice weekly for the first three weeks. The next couple of days after my DCT, however, my thighs really were toned and they looked less “doughy” – especially at the knee area.

The treatments above are done by Beauty Empire located at The Scarlet Hotel 33 Erskine Road, #01-06/07. Tel: (65) 6536 6002. Beauty Empire worked with Material World to review its DCT (Differentiated Cellulite Treatment) and its facial treatment. [Material World x Amore Silver] Silver Linings Lookbook – Deborah Tan

Amore SIlver is an ecommerce store that specializes in 925 silver jewellery. Nothing on it costs more than $50 and the store has an extremely friendly Return policy. Material World models at some of its pieces and we are in love!

Nothing commemorates a special moment better than a piece of silver jewellery. Remember those days when you would spend all your after-school hours staring into the showcases at Perlini’s Silver, telling your friends which silver pendant to get you for your birthday? Or, do you remember whipping out all your earrings and putting them on once school was over?

They may be small and delicate-looking but therein lies the fun of collecting silver jewellery. Easy to layer, change, and relatively inexpensive to buy, silver jewellery goes with just about any outfit.

Amore Silver is an ecommerce jewellery retailer with a delightful collection of pendant necklaces and earrings. The designs range from quirky to feminine, and, best of all, the pieces don’t cost more than $50 for necklaces and $40 for earrings.

The Material World girls talk about the silver jewellery they’ve chosen to model for this post below:

Vanessa wears an angel pendant necklace ($39.90)

“I told Debs that I would wear the angel because I’m the ‘most angelic’ among us all. But actually, I like the idea of wearing an angel as a necklace because it’s as if we each have a guardian angel looking after us all the time. This pendant is also a constant reminder to be an angel to other people.”

Deborah wears a round floral pendant necklace ($36.90)

“I like my accessories in strong, defined shapes. This round pendant may be made up of many tiny flowers but it still doesn’t look too delicate and feminine. I like that the length is just nice for the neckline of many of my dresses and tops too.”

Denise wears a pair of dove earrings ($17.60) and a tree pendant necklace ($39.90)

Denise“I’m in this total Divergent craze right now so the doves and the trees really spoke out to me. The doves are reminiscent of the birds tattoos on Tris’ collarbone and the tree is like the symbol of Amity. Haha! I know, total Divergent-fangirl here!”

Lili wears a pair of tribal-inspired dangling earrings ($32) and a kitten pendant necklace ($30)

“I’m a cat-lover so the necklace is a natural choice for me! The small stud-earrings tend to be lost on me cos of my long hair so, if I were looking for something dressier, this pair of dangling earrings is just perfect.”

[Material World x Collection Cosmetics] How To Contour Like a Pro – Denise Li

With the right products, tools and a little know-how, contouring is actually a lot less complicated than it sounds.

I love makeup. There, I said it. I may not be your typical girly-girl, and I don’t feel the need to wear it every day, but I do love that a perk of my job is getting to try out some of the newest products that hit the market every month.

Lately, I’ve found myself stepping out of my makeup comfort zone. I used to only use foundation, blusher, and liquid eyeliner, but I’ve been experimenting with stronger looks. I’ve swapped my trusty liquid eyeliner for a pencil to create a subtle smoky eye, have started lining my lower lashline, and take every opportunity I can to wear bright lips.

But since I started wearing makeup at 18, there’s one territory I haven’t dared venture into: Contouring. Until recently, I wouldn’t touch bronzer with a ten-foot pole, simply because the margin for error is just too large. I didn’t know how or where to start applying it, and had resigned myself to the fact that contouring was something only professional makeup artists would be able to achieve.

So when the invite to Collection Cosmetics’ session on contouring came along, I jumped at the opportunity to attend, as I was curious to see if it really was possible for an amateur like myself would be able to recreate the look at home.

Makeup artists Fynn and Rei from The Make Up Room were on hand to demonstrate some contouring tips and tricks on a volunteer. Let me be the first to say it: It seemed like a really complicated process. Here, the steps:

1. Use Collection Primed and Ready Primer to mattify skin.

2. Using a brush, apply Collection Bright & Glow Brightening BB Cream. Rather than spreading it all over your face, you should only use it on your T-zone and the area under your eyes till where your cheekbones begin. This will help conceal dullness and make skin glow.

3. Blur out imperfections with Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer using a small flat brush, concentrating on areas like the sides of your nose and around your lips to neutralise redness and discolouration. You can also use it to further brighten up the under-eye area.

4. To make your cheekbones stand out, go for a foundation two shades darker than your skin tone (I used shade 6 of Collection’s Cover & Go Foundation and Concealer Duo). Brush it downwards from the side of your face close to the hollows of your cheeks, as well as along the jawline; this will shape your face to make it look slimmer. When applying it on your jawline, be sure to blend it downwards towards your neck so the colour contrast doesn’t look so stark.

Collection Cover & Go Foundation & Concealer Duo, $16.90

5. Dust on a compact powder such as Collection Bright & Glow Brightening Compact Foundation on your T-zone to soak up excess sebum if you have oily skin.

Collection Bright Glow Brightening Compact Foundation, $18.90

6. As an optional step, you can lightly brush some bronzer at the hollows of your cheeks for even more definition.

Gulp. That’s a lot of steps … was I going to be able to recreate this look for myself? Rei helped me along by recreating the look on the right side of my face, and I attempted to do it myself on the left.

Whaddaya know? It was actually less daunting than I thought it would be. I think the results of my efforts came pretty close to Rei’s! Sure, it did take quite a bit of time, though I think I’ll be able to halve the amount of time needed to do it with a little practice. You’ll also need a basic brush set at the ready because it’s just not possible to contour with your fingers. The effort, however, was worth it as I felt it gave my features a more 3D effect.

Before: no base makeup

Before: no base makeup

After: The magic of contouring - my face looks so much sharper!

After: The magic of contouring. My face looks so much sharper, and check out that glow! (We adjusted the white balance, but otherwise, this picture was not in any way retouched)

I like the fact that contouring had everything to do with knowing where on your face to apply the respective products, rather than piling on many base layers.

As it is pretty time-consuming, I’ll realistically only do it at home if I have a little bit of time to play with. But the one product I see myself using on a daily basis is the Bright & Glow Brightening BB cream. It made my skin look radiant, yet had a natural finish for that “no makeup” look. And, because it has hydrating properties (thanks to vitamin E and sodium hyaluronate) I’d feel confident to pass on the moisturiser on days that I’m in a rush to get to work.

[Material World x The Pump Room] Valentine With Friends – Tan Lili

Who says Valentine’s Day has to be a couples-only affair? The Pump Room will be serving up scrumptious set meals specially prepared for not just couples but also groups of up to six, exclusively on February 14. Psst … you and five of your girlfriends stand to win this Valentine’s Day set meal and enjoy complimentary free-flow drinks at the VIP area! Read on.

the pump room valentines day

It’s a Friday night, and you’re all pumped up for a fun night out with your girlfriends. Except something’s put a damper on your mood: No matter where you go – restaurants, pubs, shopping malls, the streets – you see bouquet-wielding couples making googly eyes at each other. Love is in the air … and everywhere on land.

Yep, love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is upon us. Somebody help those of us who don’t celebrate it – whether we are single or not.

Lament no further; that “somebody” is right smack in Clarke Quay, at The Pump Room. For one night only on February 14 this year, The Pump Room will be serving up special Valentine’s Day set meals for groups of up to six. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed their great beer deals. I had never tried their food offerings until the recent Valentine’s Day set meal preview and, I must say, the food is fantastic.

Which probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, since The Pump Room started out as a microbrewery restaurant before they weaved in the club element later. Specially put together by Chef Jason Ng, the four-course Valentine’s Day set meal kicks off with a choice of two appetisers: Seared Ocean Scallops with Mint Green Pea Puree, topped with Caviar & drizzled with Truffle Oil, or Beer Poached Tiger Prawns with Avocado, Tomato, Pomegranate and Cocktail Sauce. It is a tough decision to make; the succulent scallops are a delight to bite into, and they go superbly well with the refreshing mint green pea puree. Paired with the tower of sweet fruit, the beer-poached tiger prawns – they are also available on the a la carte menu but presented in a cocktail glass – work to whet your appetite for the next item on the menu: Classic Lobster Bisque with Fresh Crab Meat, served with Walnut Bread.

Trust me when I say, the table was silent the moment we had our first sip of the lobster bisque. Rich, smooth, creamy, and served with generous chunks of lobster meat, the lobster bisque is one of the best I’ve tried. Chef Ng is ingenious to pair the bisque with walnut bread – the nutty flavour of the bread complements the wonderfully rich bisque without overpowering it.

For mains, one of the three options is Mahi Mahi with Caviar Sauce. Made up of grilled deep sea mahi mahi fish fillet with carrot mash, green pencil asparagus and caviar sauce, the mahi mahi fillet – this fish is known for its sweet taste and firm texture – has a slightly springy bite to it and is already lovely on its own. I’m not really a fan of carrots, but the carrot mash tastes amazing – I initially thought it was sweet potato mash! But if you prefer meat, opt for either Stuffed Flank Steak or Pepper-Crusted Breast Meat with Cherry-Port Sauce. The former is what every steak connoisseur’s dream is made of. Stuffed with spinach, feta cheese, mushrooms served with creamy mash and red wine reduction, you can expect a well-balanced mix of flavours with every bite.

The Pepper-Crusted Duck Breast with Cherry-Port Sauce – comprising pan-seared duck breast seasoned with freshly crusted black pepper cone, garlic sautéed fine beans, creamy mash potato with cherry port sauce – is a must-try for those of you partial to duck meat. The full-bodied flavour of the cherry port sauce takes away the gaminess of the meat, while the pepper-crusted skin adds a welcomed kick to it.

On to desserts. You can choose between Fresh Mango Mille-feuille served with Vanilla Ice Cream, and The Pump Room’s Signature Sticky Date Pudding with Butter Scotch and Vanilla Ice Cream. The mille-feuille is great, but the sticky date pudding is divine. When asked about the ingredients put into it, executive director Pauline (she is the one who passed on the recipe to Chef Ng) refused to divulge, and with good reason – there’s just something about this dessert that makes it stand apart from other sticky date puddings I’ve tried.

The pudding is rich, moist, and not too sweet; taken with the aromatic butter scotch, it truly tastes like a match made in heaven. Even though my fellow tasters – Deborah and Vanessa – and I were stuffed, we couldn’t help digging in to the sticky date pudding! In fact, it is so good, it actually brought tears to Deborah’s eyes after her first bite of the pudding. True story.

The Pump Room Valentine’s Day Menu ($132 per couple; $244 for a group of 4; $348 for a group of 6) includes a glass of Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Rose Bubbly for every diner. It is available at The Pump Room, 3B River Valley Road, #01-09/10 The Foundry, Clarke Quay. To make reservations, email Katie ( and Landz ( with the number of pax.

Who Was Your First Love? – Vanessa Tai

First love is an exhilarating experience. Everything feels new and exciting, and you’re unfettered by the baggage of past relationships. While not all of us still keep in touch with with our first love, it’s always fun to reminisce about the first time we fell in love.

While I’ve had crushes on like, I don’t know, a million guys before, somehow falling for X felt different. He was someone I got to know through a school camp, and I was immediately taken in by his sleepy eyes and dimples (these two physical features are my absolute kryptonite). One thing led to another, and we soon found ourselves chatting on the phone every day. Thinking back, it was fairly chaste – we rarely went out on official “dates” and if we did, our friends would be there too. Even though we’re no longer in contact with each other, I still hold on to some fond memories. For example, how we would exchange presents via our friends because we were too shy to do it face-to-face, or the time he called me from the airport before he left on an extended overseas trip.

Of course, the story of my first love is not as exciting as those in the movies!

Endless Love is a new romance drama starring Alex Pettyfer (last seen in The Butler) and Gabriella Wilde (last seen in Carrie). Wilde plays Jade Butterfield, a privileged and bookish high school student who falls in love with David Axelrod, a charming young man with a troubled background. David is Jade’s first love, and she’s so enraptured by him that she’s willing to forgo everything, including her parents’ approval. However, there’s something about David that makes Jade’s father uneasy, so he sets out to uncover more about David’s past …

We have five pairs of tickets to the Endless Love premiere to give away!

Here’s what you need to do to win:

1. Download Material World’s app, “Material World”, free on the iTunes store and Google Play.

2. On the Contest tab of the Material World app, fill in the name of the contest (Endless Love) and your particulars, and answer the following question: Name the male and female lead in the movie, Endless Love.

3. Then share this post with your friends on Facebook. Remember to tag “MaterialWorldSG” in your post. Set your post on Public so we can verify you have completed this step.

4. This contest is open only to those who download Material World app, and Material World fans on Facebook. Contest ends Thursday, February 6, 2014.

The premiere for Endless Love (PG-13) will be held on February 11, 2014 (Tuesday), 7pm at Bugis+.

Something For The Young (And The Young At Heart) – Tan Lili

Just the other day, my colleague Vanessa amused me to no end when she asked if we had media passes to KidsFest, a three-week festival of theatrical performances for, well, kids.

“What? I really enjoyed reading the Horrible Histories series when I was a kid!” came her defence. “Fine, judge all you want; I’ll ask my mum if she wants to accompany my brother and me to the play.”

Vanessa's childhood was made of this.

Vanessa’s childhood was made of this.

Not judging at all, dear Vanessa (if there were a theatrical production adapted from the Goosebumps series, you’d probably spot me among the first few rows). I reckon that’s the great thing about KidsFest – its main audience may be children, but it also appeals to adults who wish to relive the past through their favourite children’s books.

ABA Productions’ KidsFest 2014, which made its debut two years ago, will be featuring nine international theatrical productions adapted from children’s books like The GruffaloHorrible Histories Terrible TudorsHorrible Histories Awful EgyptiansWhat The Lady Bird HeardThe Boy Who Cried Wolf, and more. Apart from the increase in the number of plays this year, KidsFest 2014 has also expanded to two performing venues – DBS Arts Centre and Drama Centre Theatre – as well as introduced KidsFest+, an exclusive meet-and-greet backstage experience where you can interact and take photos with the cast.

We spoke to three lucky mums who went for a sneak preview of KidsFest2014, as they share their experiences:

The Gruffalo's Child was a big hit among the kids during the preview!

The Gruffalo’s Child was a big hit among the kids during the preview!

Edlyn Giam
“For us, the highlight of KidsFest 2014 is being able to interact with the actress who plays The Gruffalo’s child. Usually when we see a performance, we don’t get to be so up close with the actors – let alone take photos with them! I definitely recommend parents bring their children to KidsFest. It’s so different reading a book and watching it come alive in a performance. More importantly, I think the experience would help children learn about communication, broaden their imagine, and pique their interest in reading more books.”

Debora Gifford
“We loved the new KidsFest+ segment. It really makes for a special experience for the kids to be able to meet the performers up close and interact with them. My children and I have been reading many of the popular children’s books since they were young, so it was wonderful to see their favourite books like We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and The Gruffalo brought to life on stage and in songs.

Susan Koh
“Watching a performance together gives families a great chance to immerse themselves in a world of imagination filled with songs and dance. Plus, there’s something for everyone, what with shows like We’re Going On A Bear Hunt for the younger kids to Private Peaceful for the older ones.”

Tickets for KidsFest 2014 range from $35 to $62, and are available at Sistic. For more information, visit

[Material World x Elizabeth Arden] Ready For Take-Off – Denise Li

My travel essentials!

My travel essentials!

While I love exploring the world, I can’t say I love flying all that much. Other than the fact that it’s practically impossible to find a comfortable position to sleep in for those long haul flights, looking like death post-flight seems par for the course. Some celebs favour using a mask during the flight to help their skin look plump and well-rested even when they get off the plane. But I’m assuming that one of the perks of flying first-class or on a private jet is that you won’t be subject to strange looks from fellow passengers. A mere mortal like myself would be way too self-conscious to follow suit!

When Joey from Elizabeth Arden found out that I was going to be flying to Europe just before Christmas (Hello from Bruges, Belgium!), she sent me three products from the Eight Hour range – including The Original Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, Intensive Moisturizing Hand Treatment, and Lip Protectant Stick SPF15 for use on flight.

The Original Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, $40

The Original Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, $40

You probably know by now that the The Original Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant is somewhat of an iconic product. Created in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden herself, the combination of skin-soothing beta-hydroxy and vitamin E made it an instant hit as it was a cream that had multiple uses – you can use it on chapped lips, rough knees and elbows, and much more.

Now, I had tried this iconic product a few years ago when I got it as a sample at a counter, and I found it to be a little rich for Singapore’s weather as it felt sticky when you applied it. But when I used it on the 12-hour flight from Bangkok to Brussels, I understood why it’s so well-loved by women living in cooler climes. It really does guard well against dehydration – I used it on my face and neck and it helped seal in moisture and only needed reapplication a couple of times during the flight. My skin felt soothed, with none of the tightness and itchiness that I usually experience during long flights.

I’ve also been using it here in Belgium and I have to say, if you’re heading anywhere cold this winter, this is simply a must-have. As it has been super windy here, my face feels “whipped” after a couple of hours of walking around outside, so I’ve been careful to use this before and after coming home to soothe it and calm it down. It feels absolutely lovely rubbing it on after you’ve warmed a little bit of it between your hands and, to give my skin extra TLC, I use it over my regular moisturiser to seal in its goodness.

There are tons of other uses for the original Eight Hour Cream so you can keep using it long after your winter holiday is over. Here are some useful tips from Elizabeth Arden Global Makeup Artist Rebecca Restrepo:

1. Apply these on your feet before wearing a pair of socks. Wake up to softer, smoother soles!

2. Give your skin that dewy effect by dabbing lightly along cheekbones.

3. Revive hair that’s been damaged due to over-styling or chemical treatments by applying a little to the ends.

4. You can also use this to create a soft, sheer effect for your eye makeup. Simply pat a small amount onto the centre of your eyelid after applying eyeshadow.

I also like the Intensive Moisturizing Hand Treatment. It is less sticky than the original Eight Hour Cream and is quickly absorbed into the skin. I’ve been using this in Singapore and it’s not heavy as some hand creams can be. The Lip Protectant Stick is great if you are on the lookout for a non-sticky lip product. Even during the best of times, my lips are flaky and peel easily but I haven’t had that problem since I started using this. Because it glides on like a second skin, it can be used under lipstick without affecting the finish of your lippie.
