[Material World x For Beloved One] Get Drunk On THIS Red Wine – Tan Lili

The new Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly from For Beloved One may not give you a buzz, but it will give you supple, glowing skin the morning after, says Tan Lili.

red wine antioxidant night jelly woman

You’ve probably read about the numerous benefits of drinking red wine (in moderation), thanks to the presence of powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols. In particular, resveratrol has been proven to reduce the risk of heart-related diseases. And when you hear the word “antioxidants”, you know red wine can be somewhat beneficial to the skin.

That’s exactly what Taiwanese beauty brand For Beloved One’s latest skincare product is about. Formulated with red wine polyphenols from France, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is chock-full of antioxidative goodness whose benefits include restoring skin suppleness and elasticity.

IMG_7880Besides the red wine polyphenols, each 50ml jar is packed with several other patented formulas, such as Prodizia Anti-Glycation Patent (cranks up skin metabolism and fights fatigue); Phytessence Kudzu (slows down the breakdown of collagen and elastin); Chronodyn Cell Energizer (defends the skin against environmental irritants in the day, as well as strengthens the skin’s natural ability to repair itself at night); Lactobacillus Ferment (brightens and evens out skin tone); and Vitis vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract (protects the skin from free radical damage). Working together with the red wine polyphenols, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is said to help improve your overall skin conditions.

The CSI That Speeds Up Skin Ageing Process

The science behind this overnight mask is an interesting one. According to For Beloved One’s R&D team, common skin concerns like blemishes, enlarged pores and fine lines are actually the result of the often-neglected Chronic Silent Inflammation (CSI), which is the combined action of oxidation (external) and glycation (internal) of the skin.

While oxidation is a natural process in which the body produces antioxidants to counter a small percentage of free radicals emitted from normal cellular functions, external toxins such as air pollution can sometimes trigger an overproduction of free radicals, which may lead to a whole host of problems, including premature skin ageing. Glycation is also a natural process in which glucose attaches to proteins, causing the skin to be more susceptible to damage and premature ageing.

This is where the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly steps in. By combining the abovementioned patented formulas, the mask targets the root cause of CSI to slow down the ageing process of the skin while restoring radiance and brightening it.

FullSizeRenderFirst Impressions

As far as first impressions go, the Night Jelly was … fascinating. Barring the taste (for obvious reasons), it looks, feels and even smells like strawberry jam. No, really; go to the For Beloved One section at Sephora and try it out for yourself if you don’t believe me. This is my first time using a For Beloved One product, but I’m guessing the brand is big on never judging a book by its cover.

But since its appearance, texture and scent are comparable to those of my favourite breakfast spread, I didn’t hesitate slathering the product on my face. Yes, apparently I have no fear of allergic reactions. (Don’t try this at home, kids. If you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, always do a patch when trying out a new product.) Because of its jelly-like texture, the product doesn’t immediately sink into the skin, leaving behind a slight stickiness.

So, The Verdict?

There’s a claim on the packaging that says the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is able to “relieve all skin problems overnight”. A pretty bold claim – and one that I have to shoot down, understandably, because my fine lines and enlarged pores didn’t miraculously disappear after seven hours of sleep. Having said that, my skin did look visibly brighter and feel softer and smoother in the morning. Since I started using it a couple of weeks ago, I also noticed my complexion isn’t as tired-looking as before.

With the impressive myriad of skin-lovin’ patented formulas crammed into one jar, I reckon the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly brings a whole new meaning to the term “nightcap”. Cheers to younger-looking skin!

[Infographic] Wanna Look Like Helen Mirren When You Are 50? – Deborah Tan

When people talk about aging gracefully, what exactly do they mean? Is it about leading a healthy, independent life? Is it about looking good for your age? Material World polled 138 women to find out what their attitudes towards aging are like. Together with Clarins, we present the infographic below.

A month ago, we asked women aged 30 – 45 to answer a survey on Aging Gracefully. What we didn’t reveal in this survey was that this project was a collaboration between Clarins and Material World. In this survey, we asked respondents questions like, “Age is just a number – agree or disagree?” (most of them agreed), “Would you get Botox to preserve your youthful looks?” (most said no), and “Have you ever lied about your age?” (a majority said no). Attitudes towards aging are generally healthy amongst our respondents.

We also asked: Who is your role model when it comes to aging gracefully? An overwhelming majority selected Helen Mirren. Many of our respondents recognized that when it comes to aging, staying healthy and independent is extremely important. They also reject the idea of surgically preserving their looks opting instead for the non-invasive solution of using skincare.

ClarinsFinalReview of Clarins Extra-Firming Eye Cream

I tried this eye cream for a month. Initially, I had my doubts whether its efficacy would show up on me. This is not a “humble-brag” but I really don’t have any crow’s feet, eye bags or dark circles on my eye area. So when the ladies from Clarins asked if the eye cream was working on me, I told them I couldn’t really see any difference. But for the sake of “research”, I persevered and continued to use it. The Before pictures were taken slightly more than a month ago, while the After, this morning. While I’m unable to tell you how effective this cream will be on crow’s feet, I can see that it has lifted the skin at my upper eyelids – my double-eyelid lines are much more obvious.

Texture-wise, the cream is not heavy and is absorbed very quickly by the skin.

I would say, if you are looking for an eye cream to address concerns such as crow’s feet, eye bags, saggy eyelids and dark circles, give Extra-Firming Eye Cream a try. To claim a sample, you can click here.

Clarins Extra-Firming Eye Cream is now retailing at all Clarins counters islandwide. Material World worked with Clarins to create the infographic. This post, however, was neither paid for nor advised by Clarins. The product was given to Material World to review, all opinions are the author’s own.

[Material World x Elizabeth Arden] Don’t Let Stress Kill Your Skin – Deborah Tan

Fact: stress can age your skin by up to 10 years. Deborah Tan tries a skincare range by Elizabeth Arden created to help prevent premature skin aging by addressing the damages caused by stress.

“Is it because you are afraid the plane would crash?” is the question I get asked the most whenever I tell people flying makes me “antsy”. No … I do not have a fear of flying. Rather, flying is not one of my favorite things to do. I love travelling, don’t get me wrong, it’s just the process of getting to the destination that stresses me out. How?

1. Flying could screw with your sleep cycle

You want to sleep but you are awake … you are awake but not really awake … AARGH!

Especially when you take a red-eye (overnight flights). Say your flight is at 12mn and you’re bound for Japan. You check in at the airport at 10pm, spend the next hour wandering about duty-free when you should really be in bed asleep, board the plane and suffer through all the shenanigans before you actually get to close your eyes. That’d be about, what, 2am? Then at 5.20am, everyone gets woken up again for landing. I NEED MORE SLEEP, DAMMIT!!

2. You get tortured by radiation and dehydration

Newsflash! Windows on planes do not block out UV rays. The dose of UV rays you’re exposed to is also stronger as you’re flying at a higher altitude. This is before you consider all the rays coming from the TV screens, and soon, from WiFi … The air is also drier so you are losing water at an alarming rate. Those paltry cups of water they hand out once every few hours are hardly enough to keep you hydrated! Bottomline: it’s hell for your cells!

3. Your body is immobilised

You need it move it, move it!!

There’s really only so much you can move once you are strapped into your Economy seat. There’s just no way of sitting and sleeping comfortably. Your body cries for room to stretch out and lie back. You arrive at your destination feeling worse for wear – blood circulation sluggish, muscles aching … it’s painful. HELP! I CAN’T FEEL MY LEGS!!!!

And the one place where all these stress shows up? My skin. FACT: Stress can accelerate aging by up to 10 years. When you’re stressed your skin acts up by becoming rough, blotchy and dull. At a cellular level, stress depletes ceramides which help keep skin healthy and support the collagen matrix. Stress also damages telomeres (the caps at the end of chromosomes), which will eventually compromise our cells’ ability to replicate.

The Skincare Solution To Stress Aging

The review set for Elizabeth Arden’s new Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide range couldn’t have arrived at a better time. I took the Caplet Serum, $99, and Eye Gel, $69, with me on a recent trip that required me to take the red-eye. As we didn’t check into the hotel straight after arrival, by the time we actually had a chance to freshen up, my skin was in need of some serious TLC.

My skin - blotchy, dry and very pissed off that it had to fly overnight.

My skin – blotchy, dry and very pissed off that it had to fly overnight. Photo taken post-flight while wearing sunscreen. Photo has not been Photoshopped or digitally altered.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide Caplet Serum After cleansing and a quick mud mask, I applied the Caplet Serum. Each pump dispenses a fresh burst of powerful ingredients, including Telosense a protein complex to help protect telomeres. The silky serum covered my skin like balm and I found I really liked its texture. A few hours of sleep, and I’m happy to report that my skin was back to its former glowing, calm glory.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide Eye Gel Many anti-aging eye care products tend to be quite rich and so we usually reserve them for use at night. Instead, most women opt for eye creams with a brightening benefit and a light refreshing texture. This eye gel combines the best of both worlds – it’s anti-aging and it’s in a gel texture. It also contains a brightening complex, the antioxidant vitamin E, sodium hyaluronate and an algae extract to target puffiness.

Verdict

Not exaggerating here but I really felt like Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan when she wakes up to find herself a vampire. My skin looked more rested and there was a definite glow to my complexion. I applied the serum and the eye gel religiously throughout my trip and when I got back, I couldn’t help but take a selfie on my way home from the airport. I love how much calmer and even my skin looks! So if your skin acts up every time you’re stressed, I strongly recommend you give the Flawless Future Powered by Ceramides range a shot.

Eyes and face are puffy from flying but skin is definitely a lot "sturdier" looking.

[Material World x Renaza Wellness Lifestyle Lab] Chemical Peel For Dry Skin, Found – Tan Lili

Want to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin but aren’t a fan of chemical peels? A relatively new non-invasive exfoliating procedure known as Aqua Peel Facial might just be the ideal treatment for you. Read Tan Lili’s review to find out more.

In case you haven’t had enough of my whinging, allow me to yet again express my utter dismay at my drier-than-average skin. In my line of work, it’s pretty often that I get a chance to have my skin analysed. And each time, the skincare therapist would reaffirm my greatest beauty woe – that my skin is dehydrated.

My recent visit to Renaza’s Medical Aesthetics Spa at Palais Renaissance was no exception. Before deciding on the type of Customised Aesthetics Facial I’d be getting, the therapist gave my skin a thorough cleanse so she could get a better look at it and design a treatment for me.

“Hmmm … your skin is dry and it looks very dull.” Yep, she sure isn’t one to mince her words. “You shall try our new Aqua Peel Facial!”

My response was a rather violent upward jerk.

You see, I did a chemical peel before, and it took my skin one full week to stop shedding. But my patient therapist assured me the 90-minute Aqua Peel Facial is no chemical peel. In fact, it was probably created for apprehensive people with dry skin like me.

So, What Is The Aqua Peel Facial?

How my makeup-free skin looked the morning after.

How my makeup-free skin looked the morning after.

The Aqua Peel Facial is a relatively new non-invasive exfoliating procedure that works like a chemical peel, minus the discomfort as well as dry and flaky appearance after. My therapist likens it to an advanced diamond peel, which also employs microdermabrasion. But what makes this facial especially great for those with dehydrated skin is that it comes with the infusion of saline. The microdermabrasion step and infusion work hand in hand to safely and painlessly exfoliate the skin while hydrating it.

Somewhat appeased, I left my fragile skin to the hands of my therapist.

The microdermabrasion was, as promised, pain-free, and the saline infusion had a reinvigorating effect on my skin. The quick strokes of my therapist also worked to relax me further, making the procedure refreshingly comfortable – something you’d never experience with a chemical peel.

Next up is the extraction, followed by a soothing 20-minute mask. The Aqua Peel Facial includes a neck-and-shoulder massage as well.

After the facial, my skin looked a little raw (it’s a peel, after all) but otherwise noticeably brighter and more radiant. To my great relief, unlike my previous bad chemical-peel experience, my skin did not flake at all the next day. Consider me sold!

Great hair in less than an hour!

Great hair in less than an hour!

For An Amazing Head Massage

The Aqua Peel Facial wasn’t the only treat I received from Renaza that day. Before the facial, I had a Hair Wash & Blow at Renaza’s Telok Ayer Street outlet.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the part I look forward to the most during a blowout session is the hair wash, and Renaza sure doesn’t disappoint. For a good 10 minutes, I was treated to quite possibly the best head massage I’ve ever experienced, thanks to my stylist’s skillful fingerwork.

Birthday Deals For You!

As part of their 8th birthday celebration, Renaza will be rolling out a whole lot of great promotions over a period of two months. The Customised Aesthetics Facial (U.P. $250) will be going at $38, while the Hair Wash & Blow (U.P. $23-$30) will be priced at just $8.

[Material World x Breathe Pilates] 30-Days Pilates Challenge – Matthew Fam

If a session of pilates leaves your legs wobbling by the end of its duration, try doing consecutive sessions in 30 days. Sounds crazy? Not quite. Breathe Pilates’ 30-Days Pilates Challenge is perfect for everyone of all fitness levels committed to a healthier lifestyle.

If there’s one workout you must get involved in, it’s this. Taking place in August 2014, the 30-Days Pilates Challenge provides first-timers an opportunity to commit to a fitness regime, while allowing seasoned practitioners to hone their practice. And we’ve got the lo-down on how manageable undertaking this challenge can be:

What’s so good about pilates?

It involves a contraption that skeptics may confuse for a medieval torture device. But you’d be surprised at the bevy of health benefits ranging from weight loss, increasing one’s muscle tone, to recovering from sports injuries! Its an all-in-one workout that’s part strengthening, part rehabilitating.

20130707_B6555175What kinds of exercises can I expect from the 30-Days Pilates Challenge?

There are three types of exercise you can expect to do during this challenge: reformer, tower, and mat exercises. And none of these involve impossible contortions, rest assured.

“Reformer and tower exercises make use of different parts of the reformer, a bed-like structure with a series of pulleys and springs. On the other hand, mat work involves the usage of simpler equipment such as therabands or free weights on mats to challenge the body,” shares Ru Shin, participant of last year’s 30-Days Pilates Challenge.

The focus of these sessions rotates throughout the week, so all your muscle groups get an equal chance at a workout. “We would be assigned different instructors during the challenge. They would alternate their focus between abdominal and spinal articulation, arms and legs, and cardiovascular activity.” Suffice to say, these 4 weeks will have fitness regimens specially tailor-planned for you.

Can I join the 30-Days Pilates Challenge if I have zero experience?

If being able to touch your toes feels like winning the Olympics gold for gymnastics, don’t give up your pilates-practicing ambitions just yet! This programme is suited for people of various fitness levels. “I was a total beginner!”, exclaimed Ru Shin of her experience.

Be it those recovering from an injury, disciplined gym users, or people whose idea of exercise is their daily walk to the refrigerator, this challenge is built for anyone along the fitness spectrum. “One of the great things about the challenge is that it suits nearly everyone- young (the youngest student was 14 years old and came with her dad!) and old.”

The small group setting ensures that trainers give you a more personalised coaching.

The small group setting ensures that trainers give you a more personalised coaching.

Will I be able to cope with the intensity of 30 days?

Relax. The trainers will not expect you to wrangle yourself into a pretzel. “The sessions increased in intensity as the weeks progressed, so by week 4, exercises were significantly more advanced than week 1,” says Ru Shin. Its gradual intensification means that you’ll be well accustomed to the basics before moving on to intermediate workouts.

At the same time, the challenge would not consist of superficial poses that one could easily replicate without the trainers. You will be breaking out a sweat. “After some of the sessions, my arms and legs were shaking like jelly. I even ached in places I never knew had muscles! It wasn’t smooth sailing. I had recently given birth at that time and wasn’t exercising regularly before starting the challenge. But after the first few days, I started to get the hang of it.”

Some participants of last year's 30-Days Pilates Challenge and their trainer.

Some participants of last year’s 30-Days Pilates Challenge and their trainer.

What’s different about this pilates challenge?

This is not the same as attending a pilates gym for 30 consecutive days. Its comfortable group setting allows you to ease into the rigour of workouts without feeling self-conscious. And you get individual attention from the trainers too, so you won’t be lost while awkwardly yanking random pulleys looking totally ridiculous.

“The group was just right- there were 5 of us- which enabled the trainer to pay attention to each student. The trainers were all very good. They demonstrated the exercises before letting us commence. Moreover, they would take the time to check that every student had proper postural alignment during the exercises!”

On top of that, Breathe Pilates’ emphasis on a holistic lifestyle transformation is underscored with an option for healthy cold-pressed juices you can enjoy after workout sessions.

How will I be able to commit to these 30 days in light of hectic work schedules?

Sure, it’s one thing to maintain discipline in a fitness regime, but how does that stand when busy work schedules get thrown into the mix? Here is Ru Shin’s tip: “I signed up for the challenge weeks in advance and was able to plan my schedule. I would start work earlier just to make sure I would be able to make it for the sessions on time. I also tried to push business trips just before or after the 30 days. I really wanted to do something about my fitness so I made it a priority to attend every single session. No excuses.”

Ru Shin and her daughter.

Ru Shin and her daughter.

What improvements can I expect after the 30-Days Pilates Challenge?

You don’t even need to wait 30 days for visible benefits from this challenge. “Even within the first week, I noticed improvements in my posture. As the weeks went by, I became stronger and more toned; my back was hurting less and I had higher energy levels throughout the day.  Most amazingly, a shoulder injury that I was nursing bothered me less. I was well on my way to recovery!”, says Ru Shin.

Yes. A fitter, healthier you is definitely within reach.

The 30-Day Pilates Programme lasts from 11 August to 5 September 2014, Mondays to Saturdays. Register now for an Early Bird Special of $650 (usual price $680)! Daily Juice option, $140, includes 3 bottles of 250ml cold-pressed juice provided for 30 days.

Breathe Pilates is located at #09-33 Novena Medical Center, 10 Sinaran Drive (8 participants); and #02-05/06/07 Tides, 217 East Coast Road (10 participants). For more information or to make an appointment, call 9835 5683, email info@breathepilates.com.sg, or visit www.breathepilates.com.sg.

[Material World x Ioma] The Skin Analysis Test EVERY Woman Needs To Try – Denise Li

Recently, Denise Li did a skin analysis test that changed her life. Here’s why she recommends you do it too.

“I’m sorry to tell you this, DL,” Deborah interrupts herself mid-sentence as we were discussing work-related matters last week. “But I feel I have to tell you that your pores are getting bigger.”

I guess if there’s one thing you can never accuse the Material World team of, it’s mincing our words.

She was partially right: My pores ARE getting very visible. But it wasn’t the only skincare woe I had to worry about.

Lately it seems like my skin’s in revolt. Breakouts every month in addition to the shine and oil I have to battle on a daily basis. This is despite the fact that I’ve tried all sorts of products to keep sebum production under control, and been diligent about exfoliating and masking weekly.

As someone who gets to be legit obsessed about her skin condition – all in the name of work – I thought I was the best authority about what my skin needed.

Trying out the Ioma Sphere ... all smiles before the sobering news

Trying out the Ioma Sphere … all smiles before the sobering news

I Thought I Knew My Skin … I Was Dead Wrong

The Ioma Sphere

The Ioma Sphere

That was, at least, until I attended the Ioma media session last week. At the event, we were invited to do a skin analysis test via the Ioma Sphere. The Ioma Sphere is a high-tech device that helps takes five photographs of your skin to reveal imperfections invisible to the naked eye. At its heart is MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology – commonly used in planes and space probes – which are micro-sensors to help analyse the condition of your skin, down to its smallest details.

The Ioma Sphere provides details of 12 types of skin conditions: Hydration, desquamation (the level of dead skin cells present on your skin’s surface), fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, redness, UV damage, bacterial activity, clogged pores, bags and eyelids, dark circles, fine lines around your eyes.

Each of these conditions is measured on a scale of 1 – 15, with level 1 being the best, and the ideal condition you want your skin to be at.

What shocked me: With 15 being the Sahara Desert level of dryness (I’m exaggerating, but probably only slightly), I was at level 13. My skin was SEVERELY dehydrated and in dire need of intervention.

Suddenly, EVERYTHING makes sense. My dehydrated skin condition probably came about because I’ve been using one too many oil-control products. As a result, my skin overcompensates by producing even more oil … but because of its lack of water content, sebum dries and hardens, leading to clogged pores (also causing them to look even more enlarged and visible).

I also found out that bacterial levels on my skin were high (13 again) – which explains the monthly breakouts, and discovered that fine lines under my eyes (level 7) were something I needed to do something about, STAT.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though: Sagging, redness, UV damage were at level 1, so it was probably only my hydration levels and fine lines under eyes that I have to take care of, for now.

Lesson Learnt

Beauty advisers at counters usually advise you on products to buy based on your self-diagnosis, or what they observe, but often, what we know about our skin condition is guesstimation at best. Why leave things to chance when SCIENCE takes so much of the guesswork out?

This is why I recommend every woman to take the skincare analysis test using the Ioma Sphere. What you’ll find out may just surprise you.

[Material World X Elizabeth Arden] For A Tingling Sensation … On Your Face – Tan Lili

Move aside, triple espresso. If you’ve had one too many last night and are now mustering every ounce of energy you have to look awake for your meeting later this evening, look no further than this instant perk-me-up, says founder Tan Lili.

Just 10 seconds into trying it, I had a mini freak-out. The tingling! The fizzling! The slight stinging! GAH THE TINGLING! Five minutes later, I was relieved and indisputably wide awake. Oh, and my skin looked a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

WHAT SORCERY IS THIS FIZZLING, BUBBLING FOAM ON MY FACE!?

WHAT SORCERY IS THIS FIZZLING, BUBBLING FOAM ON MY FACE!?

What in the world does this supposedly potent stimulator have got to do with Elizabeth Arden? Well, everything, considering I was talking about their Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial. Perhaps I should begin with a proper introduction to this new at-home facial treatment.

Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial: Self-Foaming Mask (left) and Replenishing Serum

Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial: Self-Foaming Mask (left) and Replenishing Serum

An addition to Elizabeth Arden’s range of Ceramide youth-restoring skincare products, the Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial is a two-step detoxifying treatment comprising Self-Foaming Mask and Replenishing Serum. Ideal for use one to two times per week, it improves skin elasticity, clarity and skin tone while boosting the effects of using Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum, giving you a younger-looking, radiant complexion.

Here’s how it works: First, dispense a cotton ball-sized amount of Self-Foaming Mask. It doesn’t matter if your uncleansed skin is dry or damp; apply a thin and even layer of the mask onto your face and neck, then leave it on for two minutes. For the love of all-things beautiful, please avoid your eye area, because this is when it gets interesting. One of they key ingredients of the Self-Foaming Mask is a combination of alpha hydroxy acids and an enzyme, which is activated seconds upon application. And by “activated”, I mean it starts to fizzle on the skin, leaving behind a tingling sensation that feels so foreign at first, you’d be forgiven for freaking out a little – or a lot. What actually happens during this stage is that the abovementioned key ingredient is exfoliating, drawing out and dissolving surface impurities, hence all that tingling action. It takes two minutes for the activation to complete. Once the time is up, rinse the mask off and pat your skin dry.

The next step is to apply the Replenishing Serum on your now-primed skin. It is made up of a whole host of youth-restoring ingredients, including Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Triple Complex (a combination of Ceramides 1, 3 and 6), which strengthens the skin’s protective barrier, boosts hydration, improves skin texture and soothes sensitive skin. Massage the serum into the skin in a circular motion until it is fully absorbed. If you have very dry skin, follow with a moisturiser.

The Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial is suitable for all skin types, particularly for those concerned with visible signs of ageing. Because it leaves you with radiant, renewed skin, it is also recommended for use the night before a special occasion or as a replacement for the Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum.

Would I recommend this five-minute facial treatment? Hell, yes! The initial fizzling left me equal parts flabbergasted and intrigued, but it gets less daunting every week. Perfect for combating post-lunch drowsiness, I must say; even when you’ve prepared yourself for the self-foaming action, it will still shock you awake.

More importantly, this treatment works. My oft-lacklustre skin is positively glowing and feels healthier and rebooted post-facial – and it only takes five minutes!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial, $149, is available at department stores islandwide.

From 6-Figure Debt To 5-Figure Salary – Denise Li

She was a well-known beauty queen before becoming a thriving businesswoman, but Genecia Luo, founder of Queenz*8 Business Group did not achieve success overnight. From having to keep her family financially afloat during her teen years, to overcoming crippling debt just 4 years ago, she’s faced more than her fair share of obstacles. She tells Denise Li how she overcame them.

Material World and Elizabeth Arden Present Genecia Luo’s UNTOLD Story

What was Life like when you were 14? If you were to say, “Spending a lot of time in school and doing CCAs, and attending tuition”, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Certainly luckier than Genecia Luo who not just had to put herself through school, but also financially support her family from the age of 15.

Today, she is a successful businesswoman with a group of companies under her belt, but the road to success was a bumpy one, culminating in a six-figure debt just four years ago. How did she find it in herself, not just to get out of a sticky situation, but also to do so well for herself? We speak to her to find out more.

What, to you, is the best part about being an entrepreneur?

“To me, entrepreneurship is about having the courage to live a life that a lot people cannot find it in themselves to. Entrepreneurship is about continually facing your fears. While fear can be paralysing, it can also be immensely motivating. It’s how you deal with fear that determines how successful you’ll become. I think it’s important to acknowledge the fear; that’s when you’ll know what are the steps you need to take to accomplish your goals.”

How would you describe your management style?

“I believe in continually encouraging and empowering my staff, and instilling the importance of discipline where work ethics are concerned. At the same time, I allow them the time and space to grow as people. Every one wants to be successful in what they do, but I think everyone could do with a healthy reality check every now and then. I want my staff members to know that failures are part and parcel of building their careers. I often remind them that they shouldn’t be crippled by failure. Instead, they should have an empowered mindset that will guide them to take action and deal with obstacles as they come.”

Genecia believes deeply in giving back to society.

Any advice for women who are thinking of becoming their own boss?

“Striking out on your own is always scary, and we always imagine the worst possible scenarios. In reality, these situations rarely come to pass. I want women to know that they shouldn’t be crippled by their perceived limitations. Instead, they should channel that worry into something more positive by envisioning success. Don’t dwell, because the longer you dwell, the harder it’ll be for you to take action. Get educated, make mistakes, learn, repeat. You don’t want to be that person who regrets not doing enough for herself when you get older.”

She Is The Youngest Singaporean To … – Deborah Tan

Last year, Yvonne Chee became the youngest Singaporean to complete 7 marathons on 7 continents – all this while juggling an overseas job posting! At Material World’s video shoot for Elizabeth Arden’s new UNTOLD Eau Legere fragrance, Deborah Tan interviews Yvonne over Skype to find out more about her story.

Material World and Elizabeth Arden Present Yvonne Chee’s UNTOLD Story

First, forgive us if this video with Yvonne comes across as “DIY”. The segments featuring her talking were shot by her husband. Material World interviewed Yvonne over Skype to get her Untold story because it was simply too inspiring to miss!

When it comes to running, we either love it or hate it. Yvonne took her love for running to the extreme by making it her goal to run a marathon on every continent on this planet. So what drove her to do something, many of us consider “madness”? We get the low-down:

Yvonne2You are the youngest Singaporean to achieve this feat. Were there any other Singaporeans who have done it before?

“Prior to my completing this goal, two other Singaporeans have done so – Dr William Tan in 2007 and Ms Gloria Lau in 2012.”

Was this just only about running?

“No. While the goal was to run a marathon on every continent, I dedicated this project to a charity as well, helping to raise funds and awareness through my efforts. I wanted to raise funds for the Tsao Foundation because I wanted to honor the memory of my late grandmother who took care of me while I was growing up. In Singapore, we tend to forget about the elderly but they too have contributed to the society in their time and we need to remember that.”

Yvonne3Tell us more about your grandmother.

“My grandmother passed away in 1997 – a week before my GCE A-level exams. I was so devastated and cried endlessly for days. It seemed as if I would be a total wreck going into my exams but I knew she wouldn’t want me to wallow in sadness and so, I decided to focus on doing well so she would be proud of me.”

How did you manage to juggle a full-time job and training for your marathons?
“Training for my marathons and raising funds and awareness for the Tsao Foundation meant a serious loss of social life. I slept only 5 hours every day. My husband’s main complaint was that I wasn’t getting enough sleep and that my early hours meant I ‘made too much noise’! Some see it as a sacrifice but I derived a great sense of joy and satisfaction working towards my goal and giving back to society.”

The Story of This Restaurant Owner Will Surprise You – Vanessa Tai

Lena Sim, founder and CEO of Ministry of Food, has a story that is worthy of any bestselling novel. At Material World’s video shoot for Elizabeth Arden’s new UNTOLD Eau Legere fragrance, Vanessa Tai sat down with Lena to find out more about her fascinating journey.

Material World and Elizabeth Arden Presents Lena Sim’s UNTOLD Story

Perhaps one of the last things you’d associate with a restauranteur is a childhood marked by poverty and hunger. Abandoned by her parents as a baby, Lena and her grandmother were left to fend for themselves. Lena and her grandmother were sometimes too poor to buy food that they were forced to rummage through rubbish bins for leftovers.

Behind the scenes of the Elizabeth Arden Untold Legere shoot.

Behind the scenes of the Elizabeth Arden Untold Legere shoot.

After graduating from university, she had a high-paying job in the finance industry but she still felt something was missing. She quit her job to travel for a bit, and found herself in Taiwan where she first tried a delicious green tea dessert from an old Japanese dessert chain. From there, she travelled to Japan to convince the founders of the dessert chain to expand to Singapore. After a lot of time and effort, her tenacity once again paid off and Ministry of Food was born.

Today, there are over 50 restaurants in Singapore under the Ministry of Food brand, and plans are in the pipeline to expand the brand across the region. Of course, the entrepreneurial path is never always a smooth one. Lena shares with us what keeps her going.

Tell us about the challenges you face and how you overcome them.

“Each day is a challenge; there will always be problems to solve and fires to fight. Entrepreneurship is all about facing failure, crying, and then standing up again. I believe the moment you stop running is the moment your business will flop. You just have to persevere and never say die. Every business is like a marathon – you need a lot of patience, discipline, and perseverance.”

How do you cope with the pressure?

“When you are doing something you love, you will naturally have the energy to press on. When I first made the career switch into F&B, my peers used to think I was making a big mistake and would laugh at me. However, these same people who chose to follow their ‘brains’ are now unhappy and stressed out in their jobs, with some of them even facing very real possibilities of retrenchment. This is why I firmly believe in following your heart. I’m full of energy each day, and I rarely feel tired when I’m at work.”

Do you ever find time to unwind?

“I hardly unwind because I enjoy myself so much at work that I don’t find a need to unwind. However, I’ve recently discovered it’s actually very therapeutic to go grocery shopping!”

[Material World x Maybelline] The #OOTD Challenge – Denise Li

Denise Li was issued a challenge by the folks at Maybelline to create 5 OOTDs using the new and improved Maybelline Hyper Sharp eyeliners. This is the result.

If you were to ask women in Singapore about the one beauty product they can’t live without, I’ll bet my last dollar that most of them will say it’s a liquid eyeliner. Gel liners can be a bit unwieldy – it’s hard to draw a thin line and they dry up too quickly; pencils are great for smoky eyes but they aren’t the best if you’re running around for meetings cos they smudge way too quickly.

When it comes to liquid eyeliners, the one to beat definitely has to be Maybelline Hyper Sharp. They’ve just launched a new and improved version with an even finer tip – 0.01mm! What this means: Greater precision, so you’ll be able to create more diverse looks, from the classic wingtip to something a little more dramatic.

With the launch of the new Hyper Sharp, the folks at Maybelline issued Material World a challenge – to come up with 5 #OOTDs (outfit of the day), and create a variety of looks using the three eyeliners in Brown, Soft Black, and Intense Black. Despite the fact that I’ve always thought of my wardrobe options as limited – I am a dress and sneakers girl – I took it on. Challenge, ACCEPTED!

The Everyday Look

Look1

This is what I usually wear on harried mornings when I’m rushing to get out of the house and don’t want to think too deeply about throwing together an outfit. Foolproof skater-cut dress, no accessories. I brightened up my eyes with a subtle wash of yellow, and finished it off with Hyper Sharp in Brown. Though the default colour of eyeliner for many of us is black (as was mine), I permanently made the switch to brown a few months ago following the advice of makeup artist Larry Yeo who noted that black can actually look too stark against Asian skin, particularly if we’re not going for a dramatic eye makeup look.

The Look That Says “Trust Me, I Write Creative Copy!”

Look2

Just before meeting a client last week, I experimented with a more punchy look. The razor-thin tip of Hyper Sharp is perfect for graphic eye makeup, so I went all out with this one. I was afraid that it would go south, considering my less-than-steady hand but I’m pretty happy with the result. It’s definitely not something you can achieve with a lot of other liquid eyeliners. I finished it off with a swipe of shiny pink lippie.

The “WOOHOO, TGIF!” Look

Look3

I’m usually pretty spent by the time Fridays roll around so to perk myself up, I’d put on my favourite canary yellow dress and Melissa heels. On my eyes, I used a shimmery light blue eyeshadow and gave my peepers definition using Hyper Sharp in Intense Black. On my lips is a berry lipstick-gloss. All set for the wine bar and, if my friends are up to it, grooving the night away at a club.

The “Saturday Brunch” Look

Look4

I don’t usually do “themes”, but I was feeling particularly inspired on this day. The particular theme in question? Flora and fauna. I paired my super-girly Topshop dress with equally girly makeup. On my eyes, I used a yellow cream eyeshadow as a base, and layered on a green cream eyeshadow (flora and fauna, forest … get it?!), before lining eyes with Hyper Sharp in Brown.

The “Casual Friday” Look

Look5

Honestly, the term “Casual Friday” doesn’t mean that much for folks in the creative industry …. every day is Casual Friday for us. Despite that, I’m not usually in the habit of wearing T-shirts to work. But I was DETERMINED to wear my new favourite Beastie Boys tee at all costs. So as not to look too sloppy, I threw on this grey cardigan and finished off the ensemble with a leather bag. This deviates quite a bit from my usual look but I’m really really loving the androgynous feel of it. It’s actually quite an accurate reflection of my personality. To balance out the boyishness of the outfit, I dressed up my face a little more. On my eyes, I used all three Hypersharp liners. I lined my top eye line with Intense Black, and layered Brown on top of it, up to the fold of where my double eyelid begins. On my bottom lashline, I used Soft Black to balance out the heaviness of the look. A little coral on cheeks and on the lips adds a soft, feminine glow.

My thoughts on Maybelline Hypersharp:

They weren’t kidding when they said it was really easy to use – drawing the perfect wingtip was a cinch. If you’re a makeup newbie, this is definitely the eyeliner to get. Because the tip is so thin, you can get very close to the lashline – it’s very nifty for filing in sparse lashes. I also thought that the Soft Black was the perfect shade for the lower lashline – it will further define eyes, while ensuring you don’t stray into “Auntie” territory. They are also relatively waterproof and smudge-proof. The colour didn’t migrate even when I was out and about for meetings in high humidity.

I must thank the folks at Maybelline for issuing the #OOTD challenge too – turns out my fashion repertoire is more diverse than I initially thought!

[Material World x Breathe Pilates] Is Gyrotonic Right For Me? – Vanessa Tai

You may be a fitness newbie or a long-term Pilates practitioner. Whatever your fitness level, Gyrotonic serves to complement existing sporting endeavours. Vanessa Tai checks it out.

Okay, confession time.

When I first saw the Gyrotonic machine at Breathe Pilates’ Novena branch, I felt a tad underwhelmed. It just looked like a long wooden bench with rotational discs attached at the end. However, I soon discovered Gyrotonic was not as simple as it looked.

L1060757

My instructor Susanna explaining to me how Gyrotonic helps functional spinal movement.

But first, what is Gyrotonic?

Gyrotonic was developed in the 1970s by Julio Horvath, a former swimmer, gymnast, and ballet dancer whose career as a professional dancer ended abruptly after several serious injuries. In a bid to self-rehabilitate, Horvath developed a series of exercises that formed the basis for today’s Gyrotonic. In a nutshell, Gyrotonic is a system of exercise that incorporate movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming, and even tai chi.

Health benefits of Gyrotonic

As with other forms of Pilates, Gyrotonic requires you to be mindful of the connection between your breath and body. Some of the purported health benefits include an improved posture, increased strength and stamina, and reduced tension on your joints.

What can you expect from Gyrotonic at Breathe Pilates?

Before you embark on any class at Breathe, you will be given a one-on-one consultation where either the instructors or resident doctor would assess which is the most suitable exercise for your needs.

L1060766

Intention of movement is one of the key principles of Gyrotonic. Here, Susanna is ensuring my posture is properly aligned before I engage in movement.

Intention of movement is one of the key principles of Gyrotonic. Here, Susanna is ensuring my posture is properly aligned before I engage in movement.

My instructor for that day, Susanna is a 12-year Pilates veteran who has been practicing Gyrotonic for the last four to five years. She told me she was a dancer by training, which was immediately apparent from her graceful carriage and the fluidity of her movements. She explained that since it was my first session, she was just going to focus on one area of the body – my lower back. For regular sessions, however, you are likely to be exercising your entire body. Just remember, the machine is there to facilitate your movements but it’s actually making you do the work, not the other way round.

The Gyrotonic exercises seemed easy enough in theory; one of them involved me straddling the bench and pushing the rotational discs outward. However, there was a certain technique to it that I found difficult to grasp. I guess it was probably because my core muscles are “sleepy” from years of lack of use, so I found it challenging to isolate my core muscles as I pushed the rotational discs outward.

Thankfully, Susanna was very patient, even plonking herself behind me on the bench at times to guide me through each precise movement. That’s the great thing about Gyrotonic sessions at Breathe Pilates – because each session is one-on-one, you’ll get your instructor’s undivided attention.

Of course, one session is not enough to experience the full benefits of Gyrotonic. It will take at least five to 10 sessions before you start to grasp the principles behind Gyrotonic and feel the physical improvements. That said, I did feel the nagging tightness in my lower back and shoulders ease up significantly after that first session.

So, is Gyrotonic right for you?

The beauty of Pilates and Gyrotonic is how they were designed to be a fully functional system of exercise. What that means is, the movements you do in class are designed to help you to move with grace, balance, and coordination in your day-to-day life. Depending on your needs, these exercises can be tweaked to be gentle or intensive, or even rehabilitative.

While Gyrotonic is certainly open to anybody of any fitness levels, I reckon the people who would reap the most benefits are likely those who are seeking relief from pain in the joints, shoulders, and lower back.
