T is for Tempting Cocktails

At a recent media tasting at Ding Dong, we were blown away by the lethally delicious cocktails. One of our favourites was The Golden Mile, which is a blend of Thai herb-infused Ketel One vodka, blue ginger gomme, and citrus. The best way we can describe is like a refreshing alcoholic beverage with nuances of Tom Yam. Sounds strange but it’s surprisingly delectable. Another drink we enjoyed was the Fujiyama, which is made with Yoghurt sake, elderflower liqueur, fresh strawberries, and yuzu liqueur. Because of the sweet flavours, this is a deceptively easy drink to down. It’s only when the buzz hits you that you realise how potent the drink really is.

Ding Dong is located at 23 Ann Siang Road, Tel: 6557 0189

This is a zesty, dry Prosecco sparkling wine with fruity notes that pairs beautifully with the rich flavours of Chef Shen’s dishes.

W is for Whiff of Fabric Fragrance

Downy’s latest range of fabric softeners features an innovative technology known as the Scent Switcher Technology – and, yes, it apparently does what its name implies. The new Downy Parfum Collection is formulated with two types of Downy’s signature perfume microcapsules, which will be deposited onto the clothes during washing. Through the rubbing, moving and wearing of the fabric, the Scent Switcher Technology is activated, during which the two microcapsules are released at varying amounts. We can’t be sure exactly how and whether that works, but it sure sounds interesting!

Downy Parfum Collection, from $6, is available at all leading supermarkets.

6 Things Soccer Widows Can Do Over The World Cup Period – Matthew Fam

Don’t bother checking his phone messages to find out what he’s been up to- your man’s probably glued in front of the television all this while! Yes, we’re talking about the World Cup. Taking place from 12 June – 13 July 2014, the much-hyped tournament sees ladies suddenly “widowed” from their partner’s absence. So here are 6 ways to get him out of the house, or even a chance to rope in a girlfriend for that much needed catchup sesh.

1. A Miraculous Transformation
You’re battling for his attention, so a mere dye job or change in hairstyle will not be enough to steer him away from the TV screen. What you need to capture his fancy with is a showstopping transformation in the form of a Qi Mantra Miracle Facial treatment that uses stem cells and Variable Pulse Light (VPL) to firm up and soften skin.

The 90-minute non-invasive treatment, $350, includes a luxurious stem cell lifting mask, containing plant-based placental extract to stimulate the production of collagen and plump skin for a youthful complexion.

Available at #03-19 Wheelock Place, 501 Orchard Road. Tel: 6737 3463. Opening hours: Mondays – Sundays, 10.30am – 10pm.

singapore-restaurant-melt-the-world-cafe-hero2. A Worldly Cuisine
Sate his international frenzy at MELT – The World Café, that offers a buffet spread of cuisine around the globe.

Located at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore, take him out for a one-day-only Father’s Day promotion on 15 June. Enjoy a glorious spread of fresh seafood and gourmet pastas at the Champagne Brunch, priced at $128+ per person. Or for a feast that will fill him through the night matches (3 will be taking place later on!), try the Barbeque Dinner at $88+ per person.

Better yet if he samples the cuisine of his favourite World Cup team- allowing you to score a conversation while enjoying precious quality time away from the telly!

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore. 5 Raffles Avenue, Marina Square. Tel: 6885 3500.

Grassy_Tote_Front_1024x10243. Wear His Team Colours at a Fashion Party
You may not sit through those arduous matches with him, but you can show your support by wearing his team’s colours. Wearto.com’s 2nd anniversary party at Outpost Bar & Bistro is the perfect opportunity to wear his colours with pride. The first 150 party-goers will receive party bags filled with deals and merchandise sponsored from brands like Spa Espirit and Browhaus.

Plus, with the fashion retailer’s launch of edgy bag brand, GLUSH from Hong Kong, you can take home a piece of the soccer pitch in the brand’s line of quirky, AstroTurf-lined bags!

Party on 22 June 2014, 12 – 6pm. Outpost Bar & Bistro, 3 Sentosa Gateway, St. James Power Station #01-11. Tel: 9069 1109.

4. Catch Euro Fever
If you can’t beat them, join them! The French may have won the World Cup back in 1998, but if there’s another thing they totally get right, it’s their artisan pastries and baked creations! Bécasse has launched its full format dining concept with classic European and French inspired dishes, giving diners a wider selection of culinary treats apart from its in-house prepared pastries.

Bécasse (Dempsey Hill), Block 10, Dempsey Road #01-21. Tel: 6479 8119. Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 10pm.

For moisture and coverage in a single pump, try Sephora CC Care & Colour Creme SPF 20, $30.

For moisture and coverage in a single pump, try Sephora CC Care & Colour Creme SPF 20, $30.

5. Faking A Good Night’s Rest
Staying up for a late-night soccer match with your partner can give you a dull, sallow complexion the next day. So feign your beauty sleep with a selection of BB and CC Creams from Sephora.

From 10 – 31 July, enjoy a 10% discount on selected products from: Boscia, PureHeal, Tarte, Sephora’s house brand, Peter Thomas Roth, and Kate Somerville. On top of that, White Card members get another 5% off.

2 Orchard Turn #01-05/06, ION Orchard.  Tel: 6509 8255.

6. Visit A Pop- Up Restaurant
What better way to soak up the festivities of the World Cup than to spend an evening in a pop-up restaurant, held at a historic landmark which was once the crossroads of travellers all across the globe?

My Private Chef introduces its first leg of pop-up dining, Stories, held at the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. At $188 – $248 per ticket, enjoy a fresh interpretation of local cuisine by Chef Stephan Zoisl, who has worked in Michelin starred restaurants around Austria, Portugal and the United States of America (coincidentally teams of the tournament!)

6 Reasons Why This Sun-Protecting Accessory Is INSANE – Matthew Fam

The onslaught of Sun damage is never-ending, so we stock our beauty arsenals with sunscreens and brightening serums aplenty. Plus, there’s always sunglasses and hats to rely on- but even those get boring! Introducing the face visor: a crazy, but effective accessory that shields UV rays, while adding pomp to your fashion cred.

Peek-a-boo

I want one NOW!

1. V. Stiviano: The Woman Who Started It All
So here’s the lo-down: she’s the girlfriend of Donald Sterling, 80(!), owner of the NBA Los Angeles Clippers. Stiviano was recently caught in a whirlwind of bad press, having leaked phone recordings of Sterling’s spiels of racism that landed the big boss in hot soup.

What started out as paparazzi-repelling accessory has now been swiped up by fashion blogs and news sites in America as the next ‘it’ accessory. The difference between this and other insane Sun-protecting kits out there? This one actually looks good!

2. What is it?
It’s pretty much a standard visor pumped with 100cc of fashion steroids. Forget those tiny visors worn by tennis or golf players- this baby goes for the gold. Its chrome-like visor fans out across your entire face so you get extra UV coverage. Perfect for days when you feel especially sh*tty and want to be left alone… or pretending to be asleep on the reserved seats of an MRT train.

Would you rather wear a face visor, or be sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

Would you rather wear a face visor, or be sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

3. It’s Sold Out On E-bay
Get this- when the twitter universe started picking up on girlfriend’s use of this futuristic-looking shield, orders went through the roof! Getting yourself one here can take up to 2 weeks for processing alone (not including shipping) due to overwhelming demand.

And apparently, this sleek accessory has been sold in China- creators of other equally insane knick knacks- at dirt cheap prices. (How did we not notice this??) So before retailers jack up the price, be sure to order yourself one, pronto!

Go, go, power rangers!

Go, go, power rangers!

4. It’s In With The New
Think these visors are obiang? No way. In fact, they’re bang on trend with anything space-age and retro-influenced.

Do these cantilevered beauties remind anyone of Daft Punk? The ‘Get Lucky’ electronica hitmakers donned their trademark helmets on the 56th Annual Grammy Awards red carpet. We reckon the glare from the cameras were too much for the French duo to handle.

Lighter than a helmet, face visors can masquerade you as a fashion-forward power ranger without suffocation. (Childhood confession: I always wanted to be Trini the yellow ranger!!)

Visors were HOT in Alexander McQueen's 2012 Fall/Winter Collection

Visors were HOT in Alexander McQueen’s 2012 Fall/Winter Collection

5. It’s Got Major Fashion Cred

Contrary to its futuristic appearance, the face visor is actually a re-invention of trends past. Remember those tacky 80’s visors made from cheap plastic?

We’re getting major throwback from Alexander McQueen’s 2012 Fall/Winter collection, where visor-donned models were sent down the runway.  With a nod to the house of McQueen and total fashion cred in the bag, rest assured you won’t be a laughing stock as you don this gorgeous UV-protecting headpiece.

Burkini

Too covered up for the beach? We think so!

6. It’s Better Than Burkinis

Now, I get that some of us are afraid of riding on a new trend because it’s always a risk being first on board.

However, you should know that crazy, Sun-protecting accessories have been worshipped by celebrities since for-evahh. (So it’s tried and tested!) Karl Lagerfeld, for instance, is never seen without his gloves, while Nicole Kidman was once snapped jogging in a neck and head wrap.

Although… we can’t say for sure that all Sun-shielding methods have panned out well. *cough* Nigella Lawson *cough*. With face visors at least, you know you can take the celebrity-backed trend of such accessories and fearlessly amp up the fashion stakes.

… But It Still Doesn’t Replace Your Sunscreen Essentials

While the face visor undoubtedly offers extra protection against skin-roughening UV rays, it cannot replace a basic skincare regimen. A religious application of sunscreen and brightening serums is the key to an evenly-toned complexion, with minimal pigmentation spots caused by Sun damage.

If you are outdoors, remember to re-apply sunscreen after each 2-3 hours of exposure. A spray-on sunscreen mists a protective barrier without smudging your makeup.

So, is this an accessory that you would wear? Share with us in the comments section below!

[Material World x Amore Silver] Silver Linings Lookbook – Deborah Tan

Amore SIlver is an ecommerce store that specializes in 925 silver jewellery. Nothing on it costs more than $50 and the store has an extremely friendly Return policy. Material World models at some of its pieces and we are in love!

amoresilverfeat

Nothing commemorates a special moment better than a piece of silver jewellery. Remember those days when you would spend all your after-school hours staring into the showcases at Perlini’s Silver, telling your friends which silver pendant to get you for your birthday? Or, do you remember whipping out all your earrings and putting them on once school was over?

They may be small and delicate-looking but therein lies the fun of collecting silver jewellery. Easy to layer, change, and relatively inexpensive to buy, silver jewellery goes with just about any outfit.

Amore Silver is an ecommerce jewellery retailer with a delightful collection of pendant necklaces and earrings. The designs range from quirky to feminine, and, best of all, the pieces don’t cost more than $50 for necklaces and $40 for earrings.

The Material World girls talk about the silver jewellery they’ve chosen to model for this post below:

Vanessa wears an angel pendant necklace ($39.90)

Vanessa
“I told Debs that I would wear the angel because I’m the ‘most angelic’ among us all. But actually, I like the idea of wearing an angel as a necklace because it’s as if we each have a guardian angel looking after us all the time. This pendant is also a constant reminder to be an angel to other people.”

Deborah wears a round floral pendant necklace ($36.90)

VTDT

“I like my accessories in strong, defined shapes. This round pendant may be made up of many tiny flowers but it still doesn’t look too delicate and feminine. I like that the length is just nice for the neckline of many of my dresses and tops too.”

Denise wears a pair of dove earrings ($17.60) and a tree pendant necklace ($39.90)

Denise“I’m in this total Divergent craze right now so the doves and the trees really spoke out to me. The doves are reminiscent of the birds tattoos on Tris’ collarbone and the tree is like the symbol of Amity. Haha! I know, total Divergent-fangirl here!”

Lili wears a pair of tribal-inspired dangling earrings ($32) and a kitten pendant necklace ($30)

LT

“I’m a cat-lover so the necklace is a natural choice for me! The small stud-earrings tend to be lost on me cos of my long hair so, if I were looking for something dressier, this pair of dangling earrings is just perfect.”

Want to check out the entire Amore Silver collection? Click here to visit the store now. The seriously cool Parisian cult brand is finally available on our shores, and we’re loving their collection of stylish, yet hardy and thoughtfully constructed bags. This collection of bags is made with a super thin, lightweight and water-resistant material that moulds to the carrier’s laptop, along with other materials made with function in mind. Now your pal doesn’t have to look unwieldy carrying a truckload of things. Get this for the guy who’s never seen without his Macbook Pro.

The Cote&Ciel pop-up store is located at Level 2 Wheelock Place, outside Cumulus and Nimbus.

Nike

Nike DRI-fit Touch Tailwind

Nike DRI-fit Touch Tailwind, $65

So you’ve listened to your guy friend go on forever about wanting to get into shape but not following through on his intentions? Perhaps he’ll be more inclined to put his New Year’s resolution into action if you get him this top. It’s super soft, lightweight, and it wicks moisture away from his body during his runs to the surface of the garment for quick evaporation. It also has reflective elements to keep him visible and safe during his late night runs.

The Nike DRI-fit Touch Tailwind is available at all Nikes stores islandwide.

Sebastian Professional

Sebastian Matte Putty, $52.80

Sebastian Matte Putty, $52.80

Tell your bro that they 1990s called, and they want their slick, gelled-back hair look back. Sebastian Professional Matte Putty will give him the hold he’s after with a more natural-looking finish. And while it might seem a little pricey for a hair styling product, it is one where a little goes a long way.

Professional salon brands such as Sebastian and Nioxin are now available at www.zalora.sg

Code Deco

Code Deco B Minor, $150

Code Deco B Minor, $150

Code Deco is the brainchild of Singapore-based perfumer Gauri Garodia, and I highly recommend her line of intriguing scents if you’re on the lookout for something out of the ordinary. B Minor is distinctively masculine, with notes of dry gin, cadamom, and vetiver. Most male scents have a predictable one-note musky dry-down, but this one has a more woody, earthy finish that’s perfect for the sophisticated gent in your life.

Code Deco is available at Tangs Orchard, Nana & Bird, and Konzepp.

New Balance

New Balance MRH996, $169

New Balance MRH996, $169

We could talk about the wonderful cushioning, the luxurious materials it’s made with … but honestly, the cool vintage feel of these sneaks speaks for itself. I personally love the green one! An essential for your hipster guy friend.

MRH996 is available at all New Balance stores.

Perfect with a black dress! - Dannii Minogue for Holster

Perfect with a black dress! – Dannii Minogue for Holster

Over the years, I’ve become inseparable with my four-inch heels. But since starting this business, I’ve been working from home and, needless to say, my wardrobe has become a lot more casual. Instead of heading into the office every time there is a meeting to attend, I am usually headed for the homes of one of Material World’s founders. To wear four-inch heels to a house-meeting would be impractical and ridiculously unsuitable.

I find ballet flats uncomfortable because my feet have very high arches. I am simply not a sneakers-girl like Denise and, God forbid I’ll ever walk around town in a pair of trainers! And if flip flops are too casual, what then can I wear instead of heels? I recently found a happy solution – Holster. Made with a pioneering PVC that does not make your feet sweat, these sandals are anti-microbial and vegetarian/vegan-friendly.

This summer, Holster has a fantastic collaboration with Dannii Minogue – a big fan of these sandals. Featuring gold studs on a black jelly base, the “Dannii Minogue for Holster” sandals also come in 9 other colour variations, with some featuring studs, some, with jewels. As you can see from the campaign visual here, the black sandals do complement black dresses really well! I’m already visualising myself walking around town wearing my usual LBDs and with these black beauties on my feet …

The “Dannii Minogue for Holster” collection is available at Not Too Big at Forum The Shopping Mall, Level 2.

Hi-tech Sunnies, Affordable Price Tag – Denise Li

Many of us would have fallen prey to the allure of sunnies from the markets of Thailand at some point because they’re cute, colourful and are an absolute steal. But are you aware that these cheap sunglasses could be doing worse damage to your eyes than if you weren’t wearing any at all?

The reason is that while these sunnies cut glare, they offer no protection against damaging UVA and UVB rays. When you put on cheap sunglasses that do not offer proper protection, your pupils actually dilate to let in more light and, consequently, put you at risk of cataracts or even a type of cancer known as ocular melanoma.

(Related: Read this post to find out why it’s so important to protect your eyes if you’re an avid runner.)

You’re already meticulous about UV protection for your skin. Now, it’s time to extend the same concern to your peepers. The good news is that you don’t have to invest insane amounts of money to land a great pair. Sporting good stores such as Royal Sporting House or World of Sports carry brands of sunnies that promise UVA/UVB protection, and they usually cost under $100.

We’re fans of Polaroid eyewear, which will be relaunched in Singapore soon. Polaroid eyewear is made with UltraSight lenses, which has a polarising light filter in the centre to help eliminate glare. Furthermore, UV light absorbers are bonded to both sides of the filter to block all harmful UV rays.

Make no mistake; these sunnies are good-lookers too. Here, our top three picks from the range.
