That’s exactly what Taiwanese beauty brand For Beloved One’s latest skincare product is about. Formulated with red wine polyphenols from France, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is chock-full of antioxidative goodness whose benefits include restoring skin suppleness and elasticity.

IMG_7880Besides the red wine polyphenols, each 50ml jar is packed with several other patented formulas, such as Prodizia Anti-Glycation Patent (cranks up skin metabolism and fights fatigue); Phytessence Kudzu (slows down the breakdown of collagen and elastin); Chronodyn Cell Energizer (defends the skin against environmental irritants in the day, as well as strengthens the skin’s natural ability to repair itself at night); Lactobacillus Ferment (brightens and evens out skin tone); and Vitis vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract (protects the skin from free radical damage). Working together with the red wine polyphenols, the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is said to help improve your overall skin conditions.

The CSI That Speeds Up Skin Ageing Process

The science behind this overnight mask is an interesting one. According to For Beloved One’s R&D team, common skin concerns like blemishes, enlarged pores and fine lines are actually the result of the often-neglected Chronic Silent Inflammation (CSI), which is the combined action of oxidation (external) and glycation (internal) of the skin.

While oxidation is a natural process in which the body produces antioxidants to counter a small percentage of free radicals emitted from normal cellular functions, external toxins such as air pollution can sometimes trigger an overproduction of free radicals, which may lead to a whole host of problems, including premature skin ageing. Glycation is also a natural process in which glucose attaches to proteins, causing the skin to be more susceptible to damage and premature ageing.

This is where the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly steps in. By combining the abovementioned patented formulas, the mask targets the root cause of CSI to slow down the ageing process of the skin while restoring radiance and brightening it.

As far as first impressions go, the Night Jelly was … fascinating. Barring the taste (for obvious reasons), it looks, feels and even smells like strawberry jam. No, really; go to the For Beloved One section at Sephora and try it out for yourself if you don’t believe me. This is my first time using a For Beloved One product, but I’m guessing the brand is big on never judging a book by its cover.

But since its appearance, texture and scent are comparable to those of my favourite breakfast spread, I didn’t hesitate slathering the product on my face. Yes, apparently I have no fear of allergic reactions. (Don’t try this at home, kids. If you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, always do a patch when trying out a new product.) Because of its jelly-like texture, the product doesn’t immediately sink into the skin, leaving behind a slight stickiness.

So, The Verdict?

There’s a claim on the packaging that says the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly is able to “relieve all skin problems overnight”. A pretty bold claim – and one that I have to shoot down, understandably, because my fine lines and enlarged pores didn’t miraculously disappear after seven hours of sleep. Having said that, my skin did look visibly brighter and feel softer and smoother in the morning. Since I started using it a couple of weeks ago, I also noticed my complexion isn’t as tired-looking as before.

With the impressive myriad of skin-lovin’ patented formulas crammed into one jar, I reckon the Red Wine Antioxidant Night Jelly brings a whole new meaning to the term “nightcap”. Cheers to younger-looking skin!

The One Way You Could Be Using Hada Labo Lotion Wrong – Deborah Tan

What exactly does skin need in order to be healthy? That’s right, it’s hydration. And one of the best ways to get it is by using a product containing hyaluronic acid. Deborah Tan interviews Hada Labo’s general manager, R&D, Mentholatum, Dr Naelong Wang, to find out more about this ingredient. We also discover the one wrong way we could be using our Hada Labo lotion wrong.

A bottle of Hada Labo is sold every 2 seconds in Japan, and in Singapore, it is the No. 1 selling lotion. This month, the brand relaunches its bestseller with a new generation of 4 interlocking hyaluronic acid that promises to restore moisture in skin, layer after layer. Each bottle of Hada Labo lotion has 4 types of hyaluronic acid (HA). What does each do? Read below:

1. Large-sized HA
To fight against trans-epidermal water loss by forming an “umbrella” on the skin’s surface to create a thick moisture layer that also continuously diffuses huge amount of water to skin’s top layer.

2. Medium-sized HA
Possessing the water-binding power of typical HA but is smaller in size, it works with large-sized HA to create a double-layered moisture lock within the skin.

3. Super HA
These reach the middle skin layer and is twice as powerful as normal HA – capable of binding 12 litres of water with every gram. The Super HA keeps skin well moisturized from within, not just on the surface.

4. Nano-HA

But why is hyaluronic acid so important and is there a recommended way to use the Hada Labo lotion correctly? Dr Naelong Wang of Hada Labo further explains:

Material World (MW): What is so special about Hada Labo’s hyaluronic acid compared to the ones used in other brands?

Dr Naelong Wang (NL): Hada Labo is the originator of putting hyaluronic acid in a solution. Just how much water can hyaluronic acid absorb? One gram of hyaluronic acid is capable of absorbing 6 litres of water and is very expensive. Once, in the laboratory, a colleague accidentally spilled a gram of hyaluronic acid on the floor and I told him, “That’s 3 months of your salary gone!” The Super Hyaluronic acid that we use at Hada Labo has been modified to double the capacity of normal hyaluronic acid. Currently only 2 companies in the world use Super Hyaluronic Acid.

MW: What is the best way to apply Hada Labo Lotion? Should your skin be damp or dry? Can you put it over your makeup before touch ups?

NL: The recommended way to apply the Hada Labo Lotion is after cleansing when your pores are “open” so the lotion can be better absorbed by the skin. I do not recommend applying the lotion over your makeup as that can cause your skin to absorb powders and colorants.

MW: Does age have an impact on how our skin absorbs products?

NL: Definitely! Different age requires a different skincare strategy. When you are young, protecting your skin from UV exposure should be your priority because any damage sustained by your skin will only show up after 20 years. As you get older, dehydration becomes a concern and you need to use products that can replenish the moisture in your skin. It is never too late to take care of your skin but the earlier you begin, the less you’ll have to worry about.

Pro Makeup Tips For Asian Eyes – Vanessa Tai

Single eyelids? Sleepy eyes? Not sure how to pull off the smokey eye look? Akinobu Nishimura, RMK’s international makeup artist, was recently in Singapore and Vanessa Tai sat him down for a 101 on makeup techniques for Asian eyes. 

Your eyes are the most expressive part of your face, so it’s only natural that you’ll spend more time and effort prettifying your peepers. But with so many different products and techniques out there, it can be hard to cut through the clutter. To make things simple, here are easy makeup techniques for the most commonly-used eye makeup.

Eyeshadow

1. As our eyelids are naturally oily, it’s recommended to prep your eyelids with an eyeshadow base or some powder before applying eyeshadow. This helps your eye makeup to adhere better to your skin.

2. Use eyeshadow in one colour, but in a gradation of shades. Start by applying the darkest shade on the bottom of your eyelid and slowly work your way up the eye socket to the lightest shade. This helps create a more 3D appearance.

3. When applying the next shade, don’t start at the line where the previous colour ends. Rather, the colours should be blended so that it looks more natural. Using a brush can help you create a more natural look, without any hard lines.

Mascara

1. Before applying your mascara, it’s important to curl your eyelashes properly so that it curls upwards and creates the appearance of wider-looking eyes. For the doe-eye look, you can also curl your lower lashes.

2. When applying mascara, avoid layering on too many coats as it’ll end up clumping and weigh your lashes down, which may make your eyes appear smaller.

3. Wondering if you should get falsies? It’s always better to work with what you have, but if your natural lashes are sparse to begin with, you can consider getting natural-looking eyelash extensions. Anything too thick or dramatic may also make your eyes appear smaller.

Eyeliner 

1. To create the perfect wing tip, start by drawing an outline according to the shape of your eyes. (For a clearer idea, refer to the sketch below.) From there, you can fill in the gaps, depending on how dramatic an effect you’re trying to create. Think of the wingtip as an extension of your lower lash line. If the tip is too high or long, simply use a cotton bud to adjust until you achieve your desired effect. Over time, you’ll discover the perfect angle and length for your eye shape.

2. Some people believe lining your lower lash line can make your eyes appear smaller. However, it really depends on your eye shape. Experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you. If you want to continue lining your lower lash line, one way is to simply line it halfway (from the wing tip to the middle of your lower lash line) and use a lighter shade to fill in the other half.

3. If you’re bored with your usual black or brown eyeliner, some great options for everyday wear include shades such as navy blue or grey.

[Infographic] Wanna Look Like Helen Mirren When You Are 50? – Deborah Tan

When people talk about aging gracefully, what exactly do they mean? Is it about leading a healthy, independent life? Is it about looking good for your age? Material World polled 138 women to find out what their attitudes towards aging are like. Together with Clarins, we present the infographic below.

A month ago, we asked women aged 30 – 45 to answer a survey on Aging Gracefully. What we didn’t reveal in this survey was that this project was a collaboration between Clarins and Material World. In this survey, we asked respondents questions like, “Age is just a number – agree or disagree?” (most of them agreed), “Would you get Botox to preserve your youthful looks?” (most said no), and “Have you ever lied about your age?” (a majority said no). Attitudes towards aging are generally healthy amongst our respondents.

We also asked: Who is your role model when it comes to aging gracefully? An overwhelming majority selected Helen Mirren. Many of our respondents recognized that when it comes to aging, staying healthy and independent is extremely important. They also reject the idea of surgically preserving their looks opting instead for the non-invasive solution of using skincare.

I tried this eye cream for a month. Initially, I had my doubts whether its efficacy would show up on me. This is not a “humble-brag” but I really don’t have any crow’s feet, eye bags or dark circles on my eye area. So when the ladies from Clarins asked if the eye cream was working on me, I told them I couldn’t really see any difference. But for the sake of “research”, I persevered and continued to use it. The Before pictures were taken slightly more than a month ago, while the After, this morning. While I’m unable to tell you how effective this cream will be on crow’s feet, I can see that it has lifted the skin at my upper eyelids – my double-eyelid lines are much more obvious.

Texture-wise, the cream is not heavy and is absorbed very quickly by the skin.

Opened in late-May, this charming multi-label lifestyle store and café looks like the playground for the dapper, (dare I say it) hipster men of Singapore, what with brands like Benjamin Barker, Rooney Chinos, Aark and Bellroy. Apart from the small selection of apparel for the ladies, its industrial-chic décor (think polished concrete floors, brick walls, spotlights and vintage frames) makes The Assembly a must-visit! This local online boutique is founded by two friends – one is the owner of luxury multi-label wedding atelier The Prelude Bridal; the other, the founder of organic and eco-friendly baby clothing brand Be Green Bebe. Apres Five features a selection of emerging and renowned international brands, including James Jeans, Sachin + Babi, Graham & Spencer, and Addison. Most recently, they announced that their showroom will be receiving Fall/Winter 2014 pieces from James Jeans (we hear a maternity style will be one of their highlights) and Sachin + Babin in the next couple of weeks, so keep a lookout for them! From outrageous prints to minimalist designs, Superspace stocks a massive list of cult labels from around the world, making it undoubtedly THE place to spot some of Singapore’s top trendsetters. It’s no surprise, considering who the founders are – Revasseur designer Gilda Su, Evenodd designer Samuel Wong, as well as Bobby Luo and Ritz Lim of The Butter Factory (Ritz also owns Ritz Salon, which was formerly located at Pacific Plaza and now shares the space with Superspace). The “Mi-an” Tradition
Although Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher represents a new product category in skincare, its inspiration comes from a beauty tradition steeped in history. Introduced more than 1,500 years ago, the “Mi-an” (“beautifying finish” in Korean) was a last step of the skincare regime followed by Korean women in ancient times. It was formulated during the Age of Three Empires and recorded in the Kyuhap-Chongseo (Encyclopedia of Women’s Life) during the Joseon Dynasty.

How Does Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher Work?
Similar to the “Mi-an”, the Luminature Essential Finisher is designed to be used as the final step in your skincare routine. It works by forming a natural protective barrier over the skin, locking in the efficacy of the skincare products from Steps 3 to 8 (see above).

How To Use
After you have put on your skincare products, dispense a pump full of the Luminature Essential Finisher into your palm. Gently warm the product by massaging it between your hands and then press them over your face.

Every bottle of Luminature Essential Finisher is packed with the concentrates of 5 roots of Red Ginseng and 110 cups of Green Tea. Red Ginseng encourages the regeneration of the skin while Green Tea purifies and boosts the effect of other ingredients.

Review
Do not expect an immediate miracle with Luminature Essential Finisher. As a product designed to lock in and enhance your existing skincare products, it goes without saying that the preceding products have to work well for you in the first place. Think of it as a vitamin supplement. If your existing diet sucks, popping a vitamin pill isn’t going to make you the healthiest person on Earth. So if you think you can get away with using crappy products or with not even using any products, you are setting yourself on the path of skincare disaster.

Obviously for “best possible results”, you are encouraged to use this with other Sulwhasoo products. However, to see if this really enhances my existing skincare products, I stuck to the ones I habitually use whenever I’m not testing other products.

The improvements weren’t obvious until …. I did a half-and-half with both sides of my faces. In the After pictures, I can see an improvement in texture, tone, smoothness and firmness. I particularly like how much smoother the skin at my forehead has become. There is LESS GREYNESS in the After images – the Luminature Esssential Finisher really shines on the radiance front.

Verdict
Overall, I have found that my skin is a lot firmer and rosier after adding Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher to my skincare routine. The Koreans believe that at the age of 35, women will begin to see a lot more drastic changes in their skin due to a change in hormonal levels. The Sulwhasoo Luminature Essential Finisher also has the second function of enhancing aging skin’s ability to react to skincare products. So if you feel that your skin has “stop reacting” to your skincare products, it could be that all it needs is a product to kickstart its energy level once again.

If you work somewhere in Orchard Road, you gotta make a beeline for this brand new restaurant, SET. As the name suggests, they only serve set lunches and set dinners here. The five-course set lunch is priced at $28.80++ and the six-course set dinner, $38.80++, which is incredibly good value considering the type of dishes you’ll get. For appetisers, you’ll get inventive twists on classics such as the Mushroom Soup with Peanut Butter. It sounds weird, but the peanut butter actually lends a chunkier, more layered texture to the soup. For mains, we liked the Baby Pork Back Ribs, where the meat is painstakingly steamed then boiled with star anise and cinnamon before being roasted and slathered with Chinese BBQ sauce. For desserts, we were impressed by the Pistachio Panna Cotta, which was smooth, light and silky, almost like a tofu milk pudding.

You’ll Want to Steal These Products From Your Man’s Grooming Regime. Here’s Why. – Denise Li

Is there ever a good reason to steal from your man’s skincare stash, considering that it’s women who face an abundance of choices where that particular category of product its concerned? We’ve got lotions, serums, moisturisers and every step in between to deal with acne, roughness, dryness, flakiness, rosacea, pigmentation and …

Therein lies the problem.

The Material World team and I have the luxury of finding about the latest skincare technologies and products as part of our jobs. But I can imagine how bewildering it must be for other women to walk into drugstores and the beauty sections of department stores and feel completely overwhelmed by choice. These days, it’s not merely enough to cleanse, tone, moisturise. Besides serums, you can even use products that you can use pre-serum to help your expensive serums absorb better! And many of us use not one but two cleansers in our daily evening regimes. That’s not even taking into account eye products, makeup primers, and what have you.

Everything about the women’s skincare industry seems to be geared towards inflating the number of products we use in our daily routines because that’s how companies get us to spend more.

The male grooming industry, however, operates on slightly different principles, because it assumes that there are fundamental differences between what men and women want out of their skincare regimes. For men, it’s always about getting the maximum results using the bare essentials. The assumption here is that men don’t want to spend longer than they have to (5 minutes, tops) on putting product on their faces, so the challenge here is to create a complete skincare regime that requires no more than three steps.

If you’re tired of having to figure out which step in your skincare regime that primer is supposed to be, or consider yourself to be low-maintenance, or sick and tired of being told to spend more and more money on products that might be unnecessarily or superfluous, it might not be a bad idea to check out the more all-encompassing male skincare ranges out there.

The good people at Kiehl’s passed me their brand-new men’s skincare range, Oil Eliminator, awhile ago, and rather than unleashing it on the first unsuspecting man that passed, I decided to try out the regime for myself. Here are my thoughts:

Oil Eliminator Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash For Men

This is definitely a product I’ll consider using over the long term. For a “deep-cleansing, exfoliating” product, I found that it did the job well without making my skin feel dry and taut after that – a problem I’ve encountered using other cleansers geared towards men. I liked the clear, gel-like texture of the product, and that the crushed apricot seeds – the exfoliating ingredient – were in tiny granules so it didn’t feel abrasive on skin at all. As my skin is sometimes rough and flaky, this might be a good product to use to get rid of the dead skin cells and surface debris.

Oil Eliminator Shine Control Toner For Men

My favourite product in the range because EVERYONE and not just men should have access to a toner that you can spray directly on your face, instead of requiring cotton pads to apply. It can also be used as a cooling facial mist – I’m going to leave this in my office table as it’s going to come in handy after running around outside. It leaves my skin feeling refreshed and dries quickly too.

Oil Eliminator 24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer For Men

Disclaimer: My priority now is to deal with my dry, dehydrated skin, so this isn’t the most suitable of moisturisers for me. But here’s why it’s a super cool product all the same: It has Aerogel, which has been used in space exploration. Aerogel is the lightest solid material on earth and, when used in skincare, can vaporise sweat droplets an absorb an amazing four times its own weight in oil. Aerogel is also the reason why this moisturiser feels so weightless on skin. Over time, it will eliminate shine from skin, and is supposed to help pores look less obvious.

Final thoughts: I think one of the best things about this men’s skincare range is that the products don’t have that overly musky or masculine scent. I found the scent of the products to be pretty neutral and fresh, and the Face Wash even smells a bit minty. All the products are oil- and paraben-free. The Face Wash is also sulphate-free. The only product I won’t use is the moisturiser as it’s not suited to my skin type, but the Face Wash and Toner are definitely keepers – regardless of whether you’re male, female, or have dry skin. If you’re trying to get your guy to commit to a skincare regime, this comprehensive, yet minimalist one is as good as they come.
