Stepping Away From The Rat Race – Deborah Tan

I don’t want this epiphany to come off as cliche or cheesy. I don’t want to use phrases like, “Stop and smell the flowers” … but today, I went for a run and something hit me. Not literally, thank god!

Unlike most runs I used to do, it was in the middle of the day, when most people were still at work. Yes, daylight. Running for me used to be an activity done at night, after a long day at the office. If the weather was good, if I felt particularly unafraid of the park at night, I would run outdoors.

Of course, it would be too dark to see anything.

Today, in a serendipitous kind of way, it rained while I was out running. So I stopped to take shelter at a bus stop along Hume Avenue. I turned to look at Bukit Timah Hill and I was rewarded with a beautiful sight of trees – lots of it.

And I thought, “Wow. What a moment.”

The running I do as exercise is very much like the way I live my life. Running at night, not being able to see the beautiful things around me … that was like working like a maniac, without stopping to appreciate what I have achieved, the friends I’ve made …

Now that I’m living life a little slower, at my own time … and it’s like going out for a run anytime I want. It’s beautiful.

I’m not in a rush to complete my workout. There is NO DEADLINE to run towards to.

My sight isn’t solely fixed on the finishing line. So what if I took 10 minutes more to complete the usual stretch? I now have all the time in the world. My time is mine, and mine alone.

The rat race may have had its rewards and temptations … but they don’t make the surrounding shit smell any better.
